10 Reasons to Congratulate Someone

Happy Wishes

If you get into the habit of always looking for the good in people, you will be pleasantly surprised at the wonderful things you discover in them.

When you search for reasons to praise or congratulate someone, you spread joy and cheer. And who couldn’t use more of that?

Everyday life can slip by without our noticing the things that are going on in other people’s lives.

If we look up and stop what we’re doing long enough, we will find that there is always a new opportunity to celebrate a new beginning or a completion of a stage of life.

Getting Started

Congratulate people at every chance you get and don't forget to give a congratulations gift. Here are some reasons you might want to share a nice note of appreciation or say a kind word. Or, make an effort to really go all out and dazzle someone special with your well-wishes. Know anyone in these situations?

Reasons to Congratulate

  1. New baby in the family
  2. New home
  3. Newly engaged
  4. Just married
  5. Newly retired
  6. New job
  7. New graduate
  8. Milestone anniversary
  9. Milestone birthday
  10. Promotion at work

How to Congratulate Them

Everyday life offers lots of reasons to share a bit of cheer. You can make someone’s day by showing up with a surprise. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. Often just a homemade batch as a gourmet cookie gift is enough to make someone feel appreciated. If there’s a new baby in a family, congratulate them by bringing over dinner or offering to take the older kids out for a few hours so mom can rest. There are a hundred ways to say congratulations and they require very little effort from us and yet can go a long way toward making someone’s day better.

A great retirement gift would be to offer to help them pack their desk or take them to lunch the week after their retirement when they might be feeling blue. If a person is a new graduate, share the news with everyone you can and you may be able to help them network into a job. You never know how your good word can positively affect someone else’s career.

When someone is promoted at work, offer to take them for a night on the town or treat them to a special day of pampering. They worked hard to get where they are and you’ll show how much you realize and appreciate that.

Send something special to newlyweds after they return from their honeymoon. Chances are they still haven’t unpacked all their boxes if they’ve moved and could use a home cooked meal. Send a basket full of fruit or brownies as a post-honeymoon gift to show you’re thinking of them and had a great time at their wedding.

A newly engaged couple may need the advice of an older relative as they embark on their wedding plans. When you congratulate them, offer to help with any details they might be stuck on. Your years of wisdom can go a long way in helping a new couple.

A Pat On The Back

Congratulations can go far beyond the simple pat on the back or a note of thanks. You can make someone’s milestone accomplishments that much sweeter when you acknowledge how hard they worked for their success. Be more than just a bystander in their lives. Get out there and do something out of the ordinary to show how much the people in your life mean to you.

Hi Nicole,

Congratulating someone is a great way to remain connected. I loved the presentation of this hub. Good work!

Agree that taking note of other people's joys and hardships is important. If you want to go all out that's fine, but often just a short note wishing them well and taking note of their accomplishment or special occasion is all that is needed.

This is a great Hub! I think the world in general needs more positivity and happiness, and all of these are truly great reasons to celebrate!

These are great reasons to celebrate indeed! And yes, I totally agree that a nice celebration doesn't need to be elaborate. Bringing a little gift or offering to prepare a meal for your friends can be a great way to congratulate them.

A great way to go into the New Year. Thanks for a positive post! :)

Hi Nicole,

I like your suggestions of offering to do things that people might not think to do and that do not necessarily cost a lot of money. Some friends of ours brought over a complete home cooked dinner when we moved and were not yet in the best position to be cooking and it was such a pleasant treat and so thoughtful. We will always remember their act of kindness.

Good suggestions in this hub. Nice meeting you here on HubPages!
