10 New Year’s Resolutions for LETTING GO & MOVING ON

Letting go allows us to move on.

Letting go allows us to move on.

Resolutions are made in anticipation of a new calendar year with new beginnings. As I was reflecting on what I’d like to personally change in the new year, Letting Go and Moving On, kept coming up for me.

I’d like to share my thoughts with you and hope that they may encourage others to make changes in their lives that are important to their personal well being and happiness.

Resolutions are not wishes. They are personal goals. Things you would like to accomplish during the coming year.

Perfect Song: I'm Movin' On

10 New Year’s Resolutions for Letting Go and Moving On

1. Let go of NEGATIVITY FROM THE PAST

There is nothing you can do about what happened in the past. But you can learn from the past and move on. The only way to begin a new chapter in your life is to stop re-reading the previous chapter.

2. Let go of TRYING TO PLEASE EVERYONE ELSE BEFORE YOURSELF

It’s okay to be helpful and do nice things for others but not in spite of properly taking care of yourself. It is important to find a healthy balance.

3. Let go of GRUDGES

Learn to forgive appropriately. Holding a grudge, feeling angry and hateful for too long can manifest into other issues such as physical illnesses. Learning to forgive and move on can be extremely freeing and beneficial to your future health and happiness.

4. Let go of RELATIONSHIPS WITH PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE THAT ARE NOT GOOD FOR YOU

We all have choices of who we share our life with. Let go of people who always seem to drain you -- those that bring too much negativity into your life. Choose relationships wisely and fill your life with people that make you feel good.

5. Let go of TRYING TO FIX EVERYONE

Loving and caring about someone so much to a point that you are trying to constantly fix them is not healthy. It is important to let go of things that are not in our control. We can only change ourselves.

6. Let go of GUILT FROM PAST MISTAKES

Everyone makes mistakes. What’s important is that we learn from them and not make the same mistakes again. Some mistakes are huge. It may take time to let go of the guilt. Forgiving yourself is essential to moving on.

7. Let go of JEALOUSY

Jealousy will get you nowhere. Count your own blessings. Make a list of all the things that you have to be thankful for.

8. Let go of TRYING TO BE A PERFECTIONIST

Scroll to Continue

No one is perfect. Be true to yourself without wasting time trying to prove anything to others.

9. Let go of BLAMING OTHERS

Take responsibility for your own life. Do not give the power away to someone else by blaming them.

10. Let go of WORRY

Make conscious choices whether or not something is worth worrying about. Do not give too much energy to worrying about things that really don’t matter.

Let go of things that are not good for you!

Let go of things that are not good for you!

Best Wishes For A Happy New Year!

Smile often! Life is too short to hold on to things that are hurtful and unproductive. Letting go and moving on may be exactly what you need to continue a fulfilling, happy life.

I know that's what I need! And that's my New Year's resolution . . .

All great suggestions. I really need to work on some of those myself. Thanks, Sharon! :-)

Sonny Ellar on December 27, 2012:

I've also just written mine :) and I must say you've said everything a little too well! Most folks makes a list of their resolutions that for me is merely a list of promises they'll break the entire year. This one is different!

Sheila Brown from Southern Oklahoma on December 27, 2012:

Wonderful hub! Too many times I worry about things I have no control over. I know I need to work on that. This is wonderful advice and if a person lets go of the bad and holds on to the good, their life is bound to improve. Voting up and awesome! Wishing you a safe and Happy New Year! :)

kelleyward on December 27, 2012:

These are fantastic tips Sharon. I can really benefit from adopting these next year. As I get older I'm trying to learn to let go more often and it is freeing, to say the least! Voted up and shared :)

Yep, that's a great list. Hard to keep them, but good to work on them. Happy Creative, Prosperous New Year!

Sharon Smith (author) from Northeast Ohio USA on April 18, 2012:

Hi Paula ~ Of course not, lol, Happy New Year!!! I love how you think. Resolutions can be made and broken ANY TIME! I keep working at "letting the good times roll." Thanks for the reminder always!

Sharyn

Suzie from Carson City on April 17, 2012:

Sharyn...Don't know how I missed this one. I try so hard to follow my peeps, but you know, as the list grows, my abilities shrink......Is it too late to wish you a happy New Year?? LOL!!

So far so good? I hope so.....one day at a time, one foot in front of the other.....Resolutions can be made at any time, thank goodness. They can be abandoned as well, if we feel they have worn out their usefulness....

Sharyn if you're like me (and most people).....you come up with a brand new resoltuion every morning....do your best to see it through and let the good times roll!!!! Up ++

Dear Epi,

So you are a "two timer" ha. Thanks for stopping by again and leaving such awesome comments. Life definitely is a work in progress!

And here in Cleveland, it seems quite similar to what you describe. Sunny, dry and 40 degrees. I'm sure we are in for a rude awakening sometime soon. I did use the new snow blower one time last week. Didn't really need it but wanted to try it out (on about 2 1/2 inches). Enjoy it while it lasts.

....words to live by dear Sharon - that is why I am back here again at this wise and wonderful hub subject by you - life is like a work in progress and everyday (hopefully) we are here to learn something and move forward with our thinking ....and it's great writing like this which inspires us all - lake erie time ontario canada 12:21pm how is the weather on your side these days? Over here it's uncanny - more like late March than getting into mid January ......sun is shining, dry conditions, temperatures for the most part above normal .....

Sharon Smith (author) from Northeast Ohio USA on January 08, 2012:

Aw Martie,

Such a sweet and supportive comment. And I agree, "call it a slip" - I like that. No one is perfect. I think it's important to not beat ourselves up for a "slip" and simply refocus. Thank you so much Martie. May you have a calm and peaceful new year!

Sharyn

Martie Coetser from South Africa on January 08, 2012:

Fantastic resolutions! Each and everyone. This is actually comprehensive, including all others. Sharyn, I am so on your page with this. Of course it is not always easy to keep up with it. Sharon Smith (author) from Northeast Ohio USA on January 07, 2012:

Hi Tina,

So glad you liked this. I feel it is certainly difficult to achieve new things if we don't let go and move on from some old stuff. Happy New Year!

Sharyn
