1. Modest Mermaid
Last year, I really wanted to be a mermaid, but all the costumes I saw were too revealing. So I ended up finding something at the thrift store, gluing shells onto it, and wearing it over a short-sleeve shirt to make it appropriate. Today, after doing some digging on the Internet, I was able to find a modest mermaid costume for sale. So it is possible to find something that isn't too risque, if you're willing to put in the time and effort. Or, if you can't find what you're looking for, you can always get creative and make/modify your own, like I did!
2. Sassy Scarecrow
A scarecrow is a common decoration people love to put up for fall. Why not choose this simple, yet fun costume to dress as this year? I like this costume because it's easy to DIY if you want to--just grab a plaid button-down shirt and some hay and a cute little hat! There are also some really adorable versions online to purchase.
3. Modern Minnie Mouse
There are so many different variations on the classic Minnie Mouse costume. Why not give it a modern twist? Or a comfy one? There are so many options to choose from when shopping. Or you can make up your own! You definitely don't have to opt for the costumes with mini-skirts or low-cut tops!
4. Frilly Faun
Faun costumes were all the rage a few years ago, and they're still pretty popular these days. The makeup can get so detailed and fun with these little woodland creatures! There are a lot of ways to make this costume look feminine without it being too risqué.
5. Beautiful Butterfly (or Bee!)
Butterfly Costumes can be modest and also beautiful! Look at the large, gorgeous wings on this Butterfly costume I found on Walmart's website! Going as a Bee is also another "sweet" option! (Get it, because Honey goes with a Bee? Mom joke!)
6. Fifties and Fabulous!
The 1950's Sock Hop outfit is fun and stylish, but also modest! The retro glasses are such a neat touch, and the long skirt and appropriate top (with high collar) are perfect for a night of family fun for Harvest Fest! This outfit makes a great mother-daughter duo as well, if you want to dress alike with your daughter. It's a great opportunity to teach her about modesty, as well. Remember, you don't have to dress scantily to have a good time!
7. Roaring 20's Flapper Girl
There are several different looks you can go for if you want to dress as a 20's flapper girl. All of them are very appropriate and modest, but still a lot of fun. The headwear is really significant for this costume. You can also make use of a lot of boas and bright red lipstick. In this costume, you're sure to have a roaring good time!
I thought it was not possible to make this costume inappropriate, until a search on the internet proved me wrong! But still, it's easy to go to Harvest Festival as a colorful crayon and keep your sense of modesty, if you know where to look for a tasteful costume! Target.com has some great ones. Everyone loves colorful Crayola crayons, so why not go to your church event dressed as your favorite color? You could even purchase a colorful wig to match if you were feeling extra creative!
9. Darling Dorothy (from Wizard of Oz)
The iconic ruby red slippers and "Toto" dog in the basket are what truly set this costume apart and make it exciting to dress up as. The dress does not have to be too short to still be fashionable and feminine, either. Add a little red lipstick and a cute bow in your hair, and you're good to go! Just make sure you have your scarecrow, cowardly lion and tin man in tow!
10. Calm, Cool and Collected Cop
Not all law-enforcement costumes have to be “hoochie” as my mom would say! This costume I found online is a great example of a police-woman costume that manages to be attractive, without getting crazy. Because sometimes you’re just looking for a normal costume to take your kids trick-or-treating around your neighborhood in!
