10 Easy Last Minute Halloween Costumes Ideas

My brother, Greg, as Black Eyed Peas. He blacked out both eyes.

Cheap Last Minute Halloween Costumes

Were you invited to a Halloween party and suddenly need a costume? Are you cheap or frugal and don't want to spend the money on a fancy costume? Did you just wait until the last minute to even think about a Halloween costume? If any of these are the case, read on for ten quick, easy homemade Halloween costumes.

All you'll need are a few items for each costume, items you probably already have around the house. People like creative costumes, too, so be ready to get some attention when you wear your unique homemade costume.

Black Eyed Peas Costume

I have seen a couple of people in my life celebrate Halloween as a black eyed pea. Simply get a black marker to make a big letter "P" on the front of a light-colored t-shirt. Then, with some black shoe polish or make-up (black eyeliner works well), color around one (or both) of your eyes. That's it! An alternate choice is wearing some black sunglasses.

If you want to be plural, as in black eyed peas--whether the food or the musical group--then draw a whole bunch of "P"s all over your shirt. There. You're done.

Big Baby Adult Costume on Amazon

Big Baby

Going to a Halloween party as a baby, or a BIG baby, wil get you some attention. Turn a white towel, blanket, or sheet into a diaper, folding it appropriately in all the right places. Secure it with safety pins. Yeah, you probably should wear clothes under that diaper. You could wear footed pajamas, or opt for skin colored tones for the pants. You could even go with bare legs or pantyhose! Wear a simple t-shirt in your favorite baby color--blue, green, yellow, or pink.

Grab a baby bottle from your child's dolls or your own human baby. Bottles can also be found cheap at dollar stores if you have time to get one. Look for a rattler to carry with you or at least a stuffed toy. Don't forget your blankie!

White Trash Halloween Costume--former co-worker, Kay

White Trash Halloween Costume--former co-worker, Kay

White Trash Halloween Costume

How about being white trash for Halloween? it might offend some of your friends, but, if the shoe fits . . . . Oh, Halloween is no time of year to worry about offending someone with your costume.

Becoming white trash is easy (easier for some than others, I can't help but add). Pull a large, white trash bag over your body, cutting out a place for your head, of course. Attach to yourself all kinds of trash--crumpled up newspaper, a jar lid, food wrapper, or whatever else you can think of. You can turn yourself into white trash in no time!

Homeless Person

Well, some of your politically correct minded friends might not approve of your non-pc homeless person Halloween costume. Like I said, though, Halloween is no time to worry about stepping on toes. With Halloween costumes, just about anything--almost--goes. There are some Halloween costumes that many people, including me, would consider off-limits. But we won't go there.

Like your ability to become white trash, you can also become a homeless person quickly . . . sadly. Wear dirty clothes, smudge makeup to make your face appear dirty, and muss up your hair. An old filthy cap might be a nice touch. For men, add some stubble with an eyeliner or eyebrow pencil, if you don't have your own stubble.

Carry around your sign that you "will work for food" or a cup to hold out for donations, and you are ready to get your homeless self to the party. This costume will give you a great excuse to eat everything in sight while you're there. You don't want to starve!

Adult Rock Star Costume Idea on Amazon

Rock Star

Be a rock star! Halloween is your chance! If you have some random wig, throw it on. Or rat your own hair to be as wild as you can. If you don't have a wig--or much hair!--don't worry about it. Just find a star and hang it around your neck.

Another rock star option is to draw a star on your t-shirt and tape on a small rock next to it. There. Your dream has come true. You are now a rock star!

Halloween Serial Killer/Cereal Killer

One of my graduate school friends showed up at one of our Halloween parties--back in the day--as a serial killer, or, rather, cereal killer. I thought it was quite clever. He had cut off the front of a cereal box and pinned it to his shirt with a knife stuck out of it and taped to it.

You could choose to attach several cereal boxes on your clothing, with a knife on each. Plastic knives are lighter and easier to tape on. For added gore, add some fake blood to the cereal boxes; red fingernail polish or paint works well, as does ketchup or tomato sauce.

Adult Ghost Costume on Amazon

Ghost Costume

A traditional ghost costume is always easy to make--if you're willing to cut up a sheet. Just cut two holes for your eyes into a white sheet. You might have to trim the sheet if it's too long and drags the floor.

What else can i say about this one? You could add sunglasses or other accessories to your garb, or just be done with it and ready to go!

Food Buffet

Yes, you can be a food buffet, a real need for a big Halloween party. Cut out a variety of pictures of food from magazines and tape them all over your shirt, pants--wherever. Carry a fork with you, or put it on a chain and wear it around your neck.

Nerd

Maybe you're a natural nerd, or maybe you have to work at it. If you're used to being a cool dude, it's pretty easy to transform into a nerd. Wear a button up shirt with a pocket; button the shirt all the way to the top. Wear pants that are too short, as you roll up the cuffs.

Stick a pen or two, and maybe even a small calculator or notepad, in your front shirt pocket. Get some cheap dark glasses and wrap some masking tape or other light colored tape around the middle over the nose. Slick back your hair, and you're ready.

Females can follow the same instructions. Just pull the hair back into a plain ponytail.

Christmas Present

Be a Christmas or birthday present. You can cut out a cardboard box to fit around you. Cover it with wrapping paper, ribbon if you wish, and put a bow on top of your head. You can add a "to" and "from" tag to the box.

If you don't want to mess with the box, just wrap ribbon around yourself, wear a bow on your head, and tape a gift tag to yourself.

One word of warning: watch out who you give yourself to!

Really Quick, Silly Halloween Costumes

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on November 05, 2017:

Molly, yes, maybe so, but I think a lot of Halloween costumes could be seen as offensive. Point taken. People have to go with what they're comfortable with.

Molly on October 24, 2017:

I think it is incredibly offensive that homeless person is a costume idea. That is a persons lifestyle and not something to mock.

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on September 25, 2016:

MikeyPete, that's awesome! I love fun, creative Halloween costumes!

Mike from Harrisburg Pa on September 23, 2016:

3 years ago I went as a blonde hippie chick. Went to a convenience store and a guy went in as a Hooters girl. We had about 6 people that almost fell on the floor because they were laughing that hard.

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on September 23, 2016:

MikeyPete, that will be lots of fun--and cheap to do! :-)

Mike from Harrisburg Pa on September 20, 2016:

This year I'm improving on my hobo costume. If I decide to go as a hobo girl at work, well that will be like opening 20 cans of laughing gas. At least I'll be getting my moneys worth.

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on October 27, 2014:

Thanks, eilval! I appreciate that!

Eileen from Western Cape , South Africa on October 27, 2014:

Love your fun Halloween costumes - super cool and unique !

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on November 01, 2013:

Thanks, Sunshine! Right back at ya! Have fun!

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on October 31, 2013:

lovedoctor--I love your Wonder Woman! Halloween can be fun. I think I'll go see my nieces and then stop by the Halloween party at my brother's club for a bit. My dog is welcome to go, too, so that's cool. Yes, I'm on bubblews, but I haven't had much time to post, lately--maybe one per day if I'm lucky! What about you?

Dana Strang from Ohio on October 30, 2013:

Homemade costumes are the BEST! One year I wore a nightgown and carried a teddy bear = Wendy from Peter Pan.... these are some great ideas and will inspire even more!

Nell Rose from England on October 30, 2013:

Lol! what great ideas! love the trash look! hope you have a great Halloween!

Linda Bilyeu from Orlando, FL on October 30, 2013:

Spooktactular costume ideas!! Happy Halloween!!

lovedoctor926 on October 29, 2013:

These are some very interesting costumes for Halloween. That's a cool costume your brother is wearing. The baby costume has been a popular choice for several years now and yup, I agree. you must definitely wear something underneath the diaper unless you like being the center of attention. The White Trash Lady costume is neat and the serial cereal killer one is the most original. As you can see from the picture, I'm going as wonder woman again this year. I'm surprised this superhero costume still fits after 2 yrs. I tried it on tonight and put my wig and everything. I think I'm ready to go, but not sure where to this year just probably stay home & wait for the trick or treaters. Halloween has always been my favorite holiday and it sure is a lot of fun. Are you still on bubblews?

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on October 29, 2013:

Glad to hear that, Mary! Halloween can be very fun! Especially for adults!

Mary Cimeni from Philippines on October 28, 2013:

thanks a bunch Victoria. I'm getting more excited everyday!

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on October 28, 2013:

Mary Cimeni - That's enough time for the easy ones!!

Mary Cimeni from Philippines on October 27, 2013:

wahoo! got three days before 3 more days before halloween party. I wonder if that is enough time but thanks for this. bless you all!

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on October 23, 2013:

ElleBee--Frankenstein is a great idea. I love homemade costumes! So creative!

ElleBee on October 23, 2013:

these are great. I think one of my best ever last-minute Halloween costumes was as Frankenstein! I put on one of my dad's suit coats over a set of football shoulder pads, and covered my face in green makeup.

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on October 09, 2013:

Oh, yeah, oldiesmusic, it's easy to throw together a last minute Halloween costume!

oldiesmusic from United States on October 08, 2013:

This is great! Ideal for those office parties, and you just arrive there not having a costume in hand.

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on October 02, 2013:

CC--Grapes are a great costume idea!!!

Cynthia Calhoun from Western NC on October 01, 2013:

Haha, one year I went as "grapes" - I got a bunch of green balloons, and taped them to my green shirt and brown pants. I wore a green hat as a leaf. haha.

These are fun ideas. :)

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on April 16, 2013:

Kasman--Pimp Vader--LOL! That's so funny. Thanks for sharing that story!

Kas from Bartlett, Tennessee on April 15, 2013:

It's horrible, but at one point several years ago when I was younger and dumber....I dressed up as.....Pimp Vader. Literally Darth Vader as a pimp. Ugh, shoot me now. I had my girlfriend at the time dress up as my escort and we went out to a bar that night and won 2nd place in a costume contest. I had the helmet and a suit and a chain! I even have an old picture still of it. Ahhhhh, the glory days will always live in infamy. Voting this up and loving the cereal killer! Great job! Victoria Lynn.

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on February 25, 2013:

MissJamieD--I have to work at being crafty, too. :-)

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on February 25, 2013:

MissJamieD from Minnes-O-ta on February 25, 2013:

These are awesome ideas, I love them:) Great idea for a hub, I always run out of time for my own (adult) costumes so these will help for this year if I procrastinate again!

Debra--what a neat idea! That would be fun to do--hand out lemons! :-) Maybe carry around a glass of lemonade, too. LOL. :-)

Debra on November 02, 2012:

One that I thought was pretty good was wear a plain white t-shirt with the word LIFE written on it. Carry around a bag of lemons and randomly hand them out to people. "If life gives you lemons..."

FreezeFrame34 from Charleston SC on October 30, 2012:

Great ideas!

Congratulations with HOTD!

I have a friend who went as white trash before; it was funny seeing everyone's reaction to

her costume.

When I used to work in a restaurant, I dressed as a co-worker who tanned excessively, had 80's teased hair, and wore gaudy jewelry. It was so much fun dressing up, and I made a lot of people laugh (except one person), but I made a TON of tips! I wish I had a picture; it was priceless!

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on October 30, 2012:

Thanks, mary! For the votes and share, too!

Robert Erich from California on October 30, 2012:

This is great! I was white trash one year. Incredibly easy and very effective. At the price of a trash bag it's a well priced costume as well. Fantastic ideas and you've inspired me. If there wasn't a crazy storm outside I would likely get on it.

Well written! Certainly worthy of Hub of the Day.

Poetic Fool on October 30, 2012:

Vicki, last year a friend of mine was invited to a Halloween party at the last minute and had no costume. He ran down to the local novelty store and bought 20 or so of those tiny yellow chick toys for about 50 cents each. He hot glued them all over an old pair of jeans and a t-shirt and went to the party as a chick magnet! Great hub, by the way! Happy Halloween!

lovedoctor926 on October 30, 2012:

Congrats on HOTD! I like the nerd and the Christmas present.

Mary Hyatt from Florida on October 30, 2012:

Hi, Sunshine! I like the Rock Star, too. My brother did that one years ago. I had never seen it before. You could be the sun, going as your cheerful self. Maybe wear a blond wig and draw a yellow sun on a t-shirt with some rays emanating from it. Sunshine!

Victoria Lynn (author) from Arkansas, USA on October 30, 2012:

Clever and fun hub! Great choice for HOTD!!!! My favorite is the Black-Eyed Peas costume - but then, I live in Texas and that's one of our traditional favorite dishes.

True story about Serial Killers - my mother was talking about a serial killer in front of my two very young nieces, and one of them, wide-eyed, asked, "He kills cereal???"
