Wheelchair accessories for the senior citizen on the go

Trick out that wheelchair with wheelchair accessories

A wheelchair can be a very boring place to be unless, of course, you've tricked out that chair with wheelchair accessories such as those I've selected on this Squidoo article.

I have a 95 year old Mom, Gertie, who just broke her hip and had hip surgery. Her wheelchair has become a more intricate part of our daily lives now that she's unsteady on her feet. So, in order to make the wheelchair more useful, I've been finding wheelchair accessories to aid in this task.

The picture shown is of my brother, Ron, pushing Mom in Bermuda the week after her 95th birthday. We took her on a cruise (26 foot waves- ugh). To read more about taking the elderly on a cruise, read my Squidoo article Taking a cruise with the elderly - things you MUST know. I'm so very grateful she didn't break her hip on the cruise - she waited until we were home a week before doing that...

Note: these wheelchair accessories are not just for the elderly - that's just what I know from personal experience, but, these wheelchair accessories will work for anyone who is handicapped or disabled and is in a wheelchair.

Tush cushions

For those in wheelchairs, these tush cushions are instrumental in keeping them more comfortable and safe - pressure sores are greatly reduced when using these thick, soft, cushions.

Wheelchair accessories - Wheelchair Trays

If your senior citizen loved one will be spending a lot of time in a wheelchair, a tray is a necessary accessory. Not only is a wheelchair tray great to hold dishes for eating, but it may also hold entertainment such as puzzle magazines or even favorite craft ideas.

A wheelchair lap blanket

This wheelchair lap blanket will keep your loved one's lap warm yet will not hinder the wheels of the wheelchair. The lap blanket straps right to the wheelchair and is tapered so no tangles will occur. This is a great Christmas stocking stuffer for your favorite wheelchair rider:

A great wheelchair accessory - the Half Away Wheelchair Tray

The Half Away Wheelchair Tray is definitely in our future. When not in use, it simply folds down against the side of the wheelchair. Offered in both left or right handed models, make sure to order the correct one.

A cushy seat is a must as a wheelchair accessory

Sitting in one spot, whether in bed or in a chair, is just hard on the skin and pressure sores may result. That's why a good seat for a wheelchair is a must for those who are in the position for more than an hour or so

To read more about pressure sores and how to treat them, visit my Squidoo article: Preventing bedsores.

I always love hearing from the readers of my articles - all comments are welcome. And, you don't have to be a Squidoo member to comment. So, please, let me know what you think.

And, there's Gertie in the intro picture. Nice to see her smiling face again, looking like she was enjoying life while she could. Wheel chairs are on of the greatest invention ever for people to get around in. :)

The gel seat cushion is a great idea for gifts for those who are in a wheelchair. When you are sitting for such extended periods of time it can get pretty sore otherwise. Seasons blessings.

What a cool lense....how about a smart phone holder? and an Umbrella holder?

Nancy Carol Brown Hardin from Las Vegas, NV on December 05, 2011:

I'm already looking for accessories for my scooter...the biggest thing I really need is the cup holder. Because I have to use my hands to drive my scooter, there's no way I can hold a drink while rolling. But I have to find one to fit my exact model of scooter so I'm still looking. I appreciate all your caregiver tips and advice, and I'm sure Gert appreciates it too. Blessed.
