Very typical is water retention connected with menopause. Menopause is very difficult period of life for many women. They are exhausted from intensity of life, lead stressful and unhealthy life with thousands of duties and obligations for members of family, without time to think about themselves. When "reproductive period of lifeˇ" stops, it can be big shock for sensitive female soul, she can connect losing the menstruation with losing the youth and purpose in her consciousness. If she is afraid of complications of losing reproductive hormones, she will have many problems with health. Water retention is just one of them, very often connected with inner attitude "I am becoming old, and not interesting for opposite sex any more", so body starts to loose the shape, what is not necessary the biological program: our biological program is exactly what we believe it should be!!!

From psychological point of view, water is connected with emotions: when somebody is full of fluid, it might be that this person is full of mixture of feelings which cannot express openly...feels stuck in the certain way of living and cannot express her/his full potential. Flow of energy through the body is stuck as well, especially through the joints. Blood is connected with life-force, blood vessels are areas of life through which we express our creativity. If blood vessels are damaged, we do not feel comfortable in our life, we do not feel joy in our duties, without joy life can become slow self-destruction.

If energy do not flow through the body and emotions are not properly expressed, our vital force tends to become auto destructive: point is that energy needs to move, movement and change is main predisposition of healthy and marry life.

A lot of damage can be solved with pure exercising: with exercise, energy is sets in motion, what is its natural and healthy state. When we move we gain energy, not the opposite. When we express feelings freely, energy is circulating and feeding us.

Cause of water retention (edema)

Water retention happens because of:

  • The pressure inside the capillaries
  • The leakiness of the capillary walls.

These cause fluid to leak into the surrounding tissues, where it can accumulate in the tissue spaces around and between the body's cells. This fluid just makes people look fat. Fluid seeps from the capillaries and collects in the spaces between the cells.

USUAL CAUSES OF WATER RETENTION:

Eating Too Much Salt

Sodium intake is closely related to water retention and edema. Over consumption of salt is one of the commonest reasons why people retain fluid. The best is not to eat so much hot dogs, popcorn, olives, salted nuts, pickles or pepperoni, pizza--and add less salt when cooking.

Eating Too Much Sugar

Eating too much sugar raises levels of the hormone insulin. High insulin levels make it hard for you to excrete sodium, so people who indulge a sweet tooth can also be prone to water retention.

  • corticosteroids
  • nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • laxative
  • diuretics
  • tyroxine
  • hormonal therapy for menopause
  • the birth pill or any oral contraceptives which include estrogen.

During periods of high temperatures, the body is less efficient at removing fluid from its tissues.

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) Edema

Women have an increased risk of water retention, due to the rise and fall of hormone levels. For example, the reduction in progesterone, in the week before menstruation, can cause fluid retention.

Edema During Pregnancy Hormones released in pregnancy encourage the body to hold onto excess fluid. Pregnant women typically retain a significant amount of sodium and water. Some of this excess fluid is needed by the fetus and placenta. Swelling in the face, hands, lower leg and feet is typically seen in pregnancy.

Menopause Hormone fluctuations and estrogen replacement therapy are two common causes of water retention ans oedema.

Nutritional Deficiencies :protein deficiency and an abnormally high need for one or more vitamins or minerals.

Medical Conditions

Chronic Venous Insufficiency : weak valves in the veins of the legs fail to return blood to the heart as efficiently as normal. Here, the swelling is usually limited to the lower extremities (feet/ankles).

Kidney Disease Kidney disease can cause swelling in the legs and around the eyes. It is the result of an increase in pressure in the blood vessels, caused by the kidneys failing to excrete a sufficient amount of sodium and fluid. The fluid left behind raises pressure on the blood vessel walls, which induces fluid to move from inside the blood vessel to outside, leading to edema.

Gout - A condition of the joints, especially in the big toe, causing red, swollen, warm, and very painful joints. Connected with kidneys and acidity.

Heart Failure Heart failure can affect the right hand chambers, whose function is to receive blood from the body and pump it to the lungs to be filled with oxygen, or the left heart chambers, which pump oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. If these chambers are unable to pump effectively, the body compensates by retaining fluid and increasing the volume of blood. This causes congestion of the veins, enlargement of the liver, and the accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity (ascites) and in subcutaneous tissues, causing swelling in the legs. Typically, right heart failure, leads to swelling in the legs and abdomen, while left heart failure causes edema in the lungs, or pulmonary edema, leading to shortness of breath.

Liver Disease - Cirrhosis Damage to the liver over a long period. It has no symptoms in its early stages, but can eventually result in loss of weight and appetite, nausea, swollen legs, ankles, and abdomen; itching; yellow skin etc.

Malignant Lymphoedema This includes cancerous tumours that block structures of the lymphatic system, such as the lymph nodes.

Thyroid Disease An example is hypothyroidism, usually treated with thyroxine.

Arthritis Arthritic joints may swell with fluid, causing localized edema.

For mild fluid retention, this is what can be suggestet:.

Get into deep water. As any skin diver knows, water pressure forces fluid out of tissues and, ultimately, into the bladder. You can get similar results by exercising in a swimming pool, or your bath.

Avoid using diuretics.

Avoid using any a medications which could be cause of fluid retention and replace them with natural products:

  • high blood pressure medications
  • corticosteroids
  • nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • laxative
  • diuretics
  • tyroxine
  • hormonal therapy for menopause
  • the birth pill or any oral contraceptives which include estrogen.

Do not eat too much salt !!! Avoid foods such as bouillon, potato chips, tomato juice, bacon, ham, canned soups, soy sauce, and table salt, for example. Pizza, popcorns and hot dogs as well.Try to eat a balanced diet, a lot of vegetables and fruits.

 

Move: Walk and exercise!  People who spend a lot of time immobile (f.E. in the front of PC. or watching TV), often develope  water retention because  lymphatic system cannot drain fluid out of your tissue spaces without exercise and regular movements of body. Excercizing can relieve the body of excess fluid and salt through sweating, increased respiration and, ultimately, increased urine flow,

Elevate your feet as often as possible, while sitting or lying down,to allow the fluid to more easily make its way back from your legs into the circulatory system and then to your kidneys, where it can be excreted.Do not stand for long periods of time. Avoid tight clothing (shoes, girdles, etc). Do not cross your legs.

Drink plenty of water. Water moves through your kidneys and bladder, diluting the urine. And since urine has some fluid-retaining salt in it, the more it's diluted, the easier it is to remove salt and prevent or decrease edema

Drink an herbal tea. Parsley is the best known of these. Try two teaspoons of dried leaves per cup of boiling water. Steep for ten minutes. Drink up to three cups a day.

My husband has dealt with edema off and on for years. He is a heart patient who a few months has had a battle of Cellulitis being treated by doctors only to have it reoccur. This infection also causes edema in his legs. Thanks for the tips.

Her left ankle is swelling, at the left side of the ankle is swelling.She started to drink more water and soak her leg in warm water with sea salt and her ankle is swelling. Is there any home remedies that she apply on? Do You have any recommendation of ointment to let her to apply so the swelling can reduce?

Everyone has his/her own cause of edema, so it is very difficult to generalize - what is good for one person, it is not necessarily good for somebody else. Hormonal edema very much differ from edema that is caused by bad eating habits only, etc.

Great information. As one who is fighting edema, you have given me some new ideas and methods. I do believe however, that eating melons is probably a good idea only in moderation and limited frequency as they usually contain a great deal of sugar and fluid. Thanks for writing this super hub. Listening to your body is great advice and I really liked what you said about men having different cravings and women should not be eating like them. Yes, Izzetll you are right. Meat and diary products are full of hormones for fast growth of the cattle and that is the reason they cause water retention - they cause actually hormonal disbalance in the body.

Of course, as a ex-vegeterian you still have needs of vegeterian, actually you are still vegeterian who decided to eat meat... what is not good for you.

Actually meat is destroying your health : my advice is to eat it - only when you really feel like it!! If you do not want it at all - even better, just replace it whit phyto-proteins, and everything will be OK: Listen your body, your body will show you the way.

The meat people eat nowadays is not healthy for anybody, even people used to meat start to have all sorts of health problem - usually after 40ties- because of so many years of overloading system with - hormones and additives which are today in meat.

So many diseases can be healed and prevented- tumors, cysts, endometriosis, PCOS - just with avoiding meat and diary products...

Doing a bit of my own experimenting on foods that effect me (especially retaining water) in addition to meat, I've also noticed that certain dairy products make me retain water. Just curious if that is a food in general that does that?

My husband and I had a conversation about how I grew up on really healthy food only, that is why I don't tolerate 'bad'/unhealthy  food and have a 'sensitive' stomach. Could this be true? Like you said above, being a former vegetarian may make it harder for me to eat so much meat-  I was also dairy free during that time so maybe that is why I have periodic issues with dairy.  

I have heard of people eating so much of one type of food, their system becomes sensitive to it or it gets harder to process, but what about people who don't eat much of it, then begin eating it regularly (like in my case)?

Well, men usually have much bigger cravings for meat then women, and if we eat the same food as them, we start to have haealth problems,,,,especially ex-vegeterians....

Great guess for me with meat. Since I've been a stay-at-home mom I cook meals for our family and my husband loves meat, but I never ate much before (was also a vegetarian for a chunk of my life)- now I eat meat almost nightly and that's when I have the most problems is at night. I will give your excellent suggestion a try.

Great hub~ I've suffered from this (mostly hand joints) and at night. I never had a problem before I had my baby but now it's been a problem off and on. At the end of my pregnancy I suffered from edema. My diet is decent, not great, but I don't eat a lot of fast food. I eat less veggies since I was pregnant because when I was pregnant veggies made me so sick. I eat a lot more fruit.

This is such a comprehensive hub and I will try the tea remedy first.

I was looking for the Aquarite and I don't see it on your site? I have been trying to lose weight and struggle with water retention in my lower calves, ankles and feet and was hoping this would help. I have eliminated sugars and white carbs but the more water I drink, the worse it seems to get. I do now live in Arizona and it is hotter here which does contribute to the retention. I'd like to try Aquarite and see if it helps.

I had huge swelling problems in my feet ankles & legs. which I now control with pressure socks. but always look for ways to lay aside those socks , I'm a man. I hate the looks. even though skin colored. I walk a lot. I'm vegetarian & fish kind of diet.

Hi Denny, I am vegetarian, for last 10 years, but when I was living in London 13 years ago I had big problems with water retention because of eating the meat: it was full of artificial hormones and only-God-knows about all additives which are put in the  food of this poor animals for faster growing...??? (in my country this was not the case at that time).

Home-made food is the best. The best is to avoid meat, as much as one can stand.

As usual you just blow me away with your wonderful writing! And, of course, you know me, I just have to share your work with others and that means it goes to my healing blog and then up onto StumbleUpon too!

You really hit the nail on the head for the vast problems in the American culture: too much of everything and not much in moderation. We have a high meat, high salt and high sugar diet with little exercise to offset it.

Everyone gets in their cars to go somewhere because it is often 20 miles or more to get to the destination and no transit system to get on and do some walking in between like in Europe. In short, we end up sitting far too much and experience water retention.

I got off most meat other than the occasional turkey some time ago and what swelling I had disappeared so I associated the issue with meat. Also, noticed just like you said, that sugar causes swelling too so began changing recipes to lower the sugar and only eat sugary things every now and then. In America people eat sugar like several times a day every day! Is it any wonder why we are a "swelling" society?!

It was so wonderful to get the validation AND the science behind a lot of my own personal observations that I found to be true for me; now I know they are true for everyone. Thanks for that!
