Sciatica And Sleep.

If you have back pain and sciatica symptoms a good nights sleep or indeed any adequate sleep may well feel like a distant dream.....

It is bad enough getting through the days in pain, to only face the nights with pain. To me dealing with trying to sleep with sciatica, the nights were worse. However, when you are suffering any sciatic or back pain condition it is important to get rest and sleep so your body can rest and heal.

For so many of us with back, neck or sciatic pain sleep is hard to come by. Back pain and sleep do not go together very well and insomnia and sleep deprivation can become a miserable part of life.

This page aims to give you some things to try which I hope will help you get a restful nights sleep in spite of the pain. I dont know what will work for you I just hope that one of these things or a combination of them may help you.

I have been there with back pain, sciatica and sleepless nights, night after night and would not wish anyone to be experiencing that, so do a little research , see what you think and try what you like the sound of.

I find body pillows very useful for keeping my head, spine and neck in good alignment during the night. Which one you choose is very personal. I have included a selection here on this page for you to take a look at.

I used to place a pillow between my knees to help my spine but over time I found I wanted to switch to a body pillow as find them much better than using ordinary pillows which tend to fall out of bed during the night!

Body pillows are usually billed as being good for pregnancy but do try one for you r back as they can make a good difference and a good one will help to keep you r spine in better alignment , reducing the stress on it and hopefully easing you into a bettter, sleep. .

A good full body pillow will do its job and keep you more comfortable. Particularly good if you are a natural side sleeper but also good if you tend to sleep in another position not so good for your back .

1. Keep your bedroom a place of peace and relaxation, no work here.

2.No lights or very low light to sleep in is best.

3.Keep the temperature comfortable-not too warm or too cold. Keep the room airy but warm enough for you.

4.Ensure your mattress is comfortable.

5.Find a good sleep position for you.Use pillows or ideally a full supportive body pillow to help get comfortable.

6.Try to keep to the same routine before you go to bed eg bath, back exercises read, bed.

7.Try relaxing or meditation music while you are in bed so you can drift off to sleep listening to it.

How To Sleep With Back Pain. Sleep Positions when sleeping with back and sciatic pain.

The way you sleep with sciatica is really down to how you can get comfortable. However here are a couple of pointers to help.

Many back pain and sciatica sufferers find sleeping on their side with a pillow between the knees helpful.

If you only get sciatica on one side try sleeping on the opposite side to the pain.

Some people with back pain and sciatica will find that sleeping on their back is better. If so try using a small towel under your hips to give you more support. Also a pillow under your knees may feel good.

Sleeping on your stomach seems to be generally advised against by healthcare and back pain websites as it can put pressure on your back and cause too great a curve in the neck and spine.

If you find working the pillows too much of a hassle you may like to think about a full body pillow to help you maintain a good sleep position. I know of someone who has two-one in the front and one at his back...but most people are happy with one!

If you have had back surgery it s very important that you please consult with your surgeon or healthcare provider over the best way for you to sleep particularly just post surgery.

What Is Memory Foam ? Can It Help Sleeping With Sciatica And Back Pain?

A possible helpful sleep aid if you have sciatic and back pain.

I am a big fan of memory foam. I never took much notice of it until I got back pain. We had a perfectly good and fairly new mattress but once I was in pain I just could not get comfortable on it.

We really didnt want to go out and buy yet another mattress so we decided to try a memory foam mattress topper which fits on top of the mattress under your sheet.

We ordered it and it came tightly packaged. We got a real shock when we opened it because it was a lot smaller than the bed and we thought they had sent the wrong size!!

However our fears were allayed when we actually read the instructions which told us to lay it out flat for 24 hours in a warm room..then it expanded and all was well :)

So what is memory foam?

It is made from polyurethane, sometimes referred to as visco elastic. Good quality memory foam of high density reacts to body heat and moulds itself to the shape of your body , cradling and supporting your body.

The technology was developed by NASA, though not used in the space program , rather for medical needs. You will find it used in mattresses, pads,wheelchair seats, cervcial pillows etc.

What To Consider About Memory Foam With A Bad Back.

There are now many companies selling memory foam products. Do your research. Quality varies. It is important you read about the detail of each product, check out the density, firmness and temperature sensitivity. If you can ask questions of the retailer.

Some have the same support across the whole mattress, some have graduated support with more support across the hips. Quality can vary between makes so you need to check as much as you can.

No matter what your sleep position it should mould to your body and as you move it will return to normal and readjust itself.

It needs to be sensitive to your body heat, try to check this out before buying. Ask questions.

You can test out memory foam yourself by placing your hand on it and then lifting your hand away. Within seconds it returns to normal again.

It can be warmer than sleeping on an ordinary mattress. I have to say I havent noticed too much difference myself and for me I prefer warmth as it helps my back. You can always reduce the layers or quilt tog if necessary. However some may find it too warm.

Some people say there is a peculiar smell to memory foam. I would say in my experience it was only there for the day we had it out for airing and not really that noticeable,then it totally disappeared, again it is individual to you.

It is fair to say memory foam does not suit everyone, that goes for most things. I love it! My mum has arthritis and having tried it out is now going to buy one for herself.

I have shown a selection here, I have not clearly tried them all. You must decide what is right for you.

If you have back pain,sciatica, arthritis or just feel the need for a more comfortable sleep it may be worth you looking into further.

A Few Donts About Sleeping With Sciatica And Back Pain

1. Have a warm bath or shower then do any back pain exercises you need to then go to bed. Dont go to bed too close after having a bath, your body needs to cool down a little before you get into bed. About 30-60 minutes is good.

2. Dont drink too much too close to bedtime or you will be pacing to the bathroom all night!

3.Dont drink alcohol if you have sleep difficulties, it may well send you to sleep but you will not get the quality of sleep and you may wake up during the night.

4. Avoid disturbing or exciting films just before sleep.

@RaintreeAnnie: I read up on the nerve and it runs from in between your vertebrae, through the "hole" in your hip bone - if you're young maybe manipulation will help (sitting wrong can pinch the nerve between the muscle) - Anyway I lay on my back with my back side against the wall - my legs up against the wall. I wiggled my hips and my lower back made a few cruching souds and then the pain was gone instantly - this after suffering for about 6 weeks. It was bliss. (I had to be careful for a few days but yes the nagging pain was GONE

orthro dr last week & he said to give it time for the injections to work my pain is out of controll & I did not sleep at all last night what should I do?"

@Virginia Allain: Thank you . memory foam suits me. Its individual people have to try it and see. Yes I only use a small pillow between the knees. Or try a folded towel to see if that is better for you.

@bames24 lm: Yes a warm bath can be helpful for some people. I always got a warm bath about an hour before bed, then did my exercises then to bed and found I slept better.

I had an L5/S1 foraminotomy less than two weeks ago, because of constant sciatic pain (for well over a year). Although the pain seemed to be gone immediately following surgery, it has returned with a vengeance, but mostly just at night. My doctor has now put me on an anti-seizure medication, which is also given for nerve pain. I am praying it works. Sciatic pain during the day is bad enough, but it's worse at night -- I need some sleep!

I agree with your opinion of memory foam. At this point, I wouldn't want to be without it. I have trouble with the pillow between the legs, but think I need to find a smaller, softer pillow for it to be comfortable.

Thank you for all these helpful Sleep Tips for Sciatic and Back Pain. I have found that I get temporary relief by putting a cold drink on my back when I go to bed. I put it right next to the skin and do get temporary relief.

@Helene-Malmsio: Helene, I agree. If its possible to help our backs to heal more naturally or with exercises that is better. I do believe in trying non or less invasive methods first and giving things a fair trial and time to heal. Sleep positions can help a lot. I am glad you liked this page :)

@AmateurAtHTML: Yes I certainly found that the position I slept in did make a difference to the sciatic pain levels when trying to sleep. Getting the correct mattress to suit you can be difficult and it is individual , but is bliss when you get it right.

The hot tub -if people have one- before bed can be a helpful tip to try. If not a warm bath in my experience was also good. I found it certainly relaxed me :)

@BrickHouseFabrics: It is very important for people to try out what may suit them re mattresses etc.I totally agree. Ideally it is to test what may suit you and then get any mattress, topper etc on the basis of a money back guarantee if possible so you can try it out actually sleeping on it.

I suffer from sciatic pain on my left side. After 3 or 4 hours of sleeping, I start to toss and turn trying to get comfortable. We just invested in a memory foam mattress and cannot believe the difference. There are no pressure points, and zero back pain. Ah, beautiful sleep :-)

I also try to have a hot tub before bed. Heck, on one occasion to even headed outside at 2:00 a.m. to hop in spa so that I could get some sleep. Whether it's because it relaxes me in general, or it specifically relaxes my back muscles I'm not sure. But it is an nice way to end off the day :-)

OMG, back pain, sciatic pain, shoulder pain, hip pain and even knee pain can be brutal and make it difficult to get a restful sleep ... I have been there ... had back surgery I think in May 1997 -- it's hard to remember the year date because it has flown by. It is good to have all these meaningful tips my dear. Thank you!
