Health Benefits of the Tangy Lemon and Lemon Juice

Rajan is a botany and chemistry major. He has worked as a poultry breeder for 23 years, breeding layer and broiler parents.

Ailments can affect anyone, anytime. Help is at hand, right in your kitchen.

Our kitchen has numerous fruits, vegetables and herbs at all times, one of which is the very common lemon.

Lemon can be used in every season as it adapts its benefits to the changing season and keeps one free from seasonal afflictions.

Lemon juice has a high content of vitamin C, some vitamin B vitamins and a healthy dose of minerals like calcium, potassium, magnesium and copper.

The best lemon is the one having thin skin. If warmed slightly before extracting juice three times more juice can be extracted.

Lemons can be made into a sweet drink/sharbat, pickles - both sweet and salty and candied. Its juice is often squeezed over Indian dishes like pav bhaji or snacks like bhelpuri etc.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is light and easily digestible. Though lemons are acidic outside once the juice is in the body it turns alkaline as its citric acid content prevents acidity once it is metabolized thus increasing the body alkalinity and keeping infections at bay as bacteria cannot thrive in an alkaline medium.

It not only relieves stomach related problems but since it is cold by nature it reduces heat in the body and this is why lemon juice water is given in summer.

Lemon juice helps in relieving constipation and the juice when applied externally relieves various skin related problems.

Lemon juice is good not only in treating wounds due to piles and boils but in expelling intestinal worms as well. It is a potent help in diabetes, influenza and coryza.

Lemon juice is extremely beneficial in combating joint pains and gout. Uric acid, a type of poison, is constantly formed in the body and expelled through urine. Our body needs to maintain a low level of uric acid and lemon juice helps to remove this uric acid.

By virtue of its high vitamin C content lemon juice boosts immunity levels and prevents infections as well as combating the ill effects of heat stress.

I personally drink a glass of lemon juice water on waking up made by adding the juice of one lemon to a glass of warm water. It not only flushes the system of toxins, prevents kidney stones and helps in reducing weight but benefits the heart as well because of its high potassium content.

When lemon is not available I use bottled lemon juice so that I can continue getting these benefits every day.

Ayurvedic Uses of Lemon Juice

In High Uric Acid Levels

If after a full night's sleep you feel lethargic and tired on getting up or you are feeling the heat in the body, chances are that your uric acid level is high.

To reduce uric acid levels stop drinking tea and start taking the juice of 1 or 2 lemons in a glass of tepid or cool water, first thing in the morning on empty stomach. It will immediately act on the kidneys which will flush out the excess uric acid. Take this daily for some days, you will feel an enormous difference.

Incidentally, high uric acid levels are also one of the reasons for gout.

Hi Rajan,

Thanks for writing this article. I've started taking lemon juice (one lemon) with water every morning. However, the sourness of the lemon has started hurting my throat considerably. Any suggestions on how I can get around this? I also wanted to know if adding honey negates the lemon's healing properties.

Thanks again

Hi Rajan!

I love the bright fresh taste in so many recipes and lemon juice adds so much flavor without adding calories.

It may not help control blood sugar in the same way as vinegar, but it can help by adding rich, low calorie, high vitamin flavor.

They are also effective in curing biliousness, heartburn, nausea, constipation and worm infestations.

If you make a habit of drinking lemon water consistently in the mornings it acts as a tonic to your liver and stimulates your liver to make bile and be ready to digest the food you eat during the day.

Lemon water can also assist in relieving symptoms of tonsillitis, asthma and sore throat. Lemons provide your body with many vitamins that are beneficial to your health.

Your hub is amazing that include A to Z of Health, Beauty and Fitness because of the high vitamin C content in lemons they may help prevent and treat infections, bring down high fevers and hasten wound healing. Vitamin C supports your immune system to help fight off diseases and infections. Vitamin C is essential for the synthesis of collagen and a vital structural component of blood vessels, bone, ligaments and tendons.
