Get Rid Of Anxiety Without Medicine Or Pills!
I used to suffer from anxiety and panic attacks for a few years, and while everyone kept urging me to go to the doctor, I never did. Eventually it went away - not entirely alone, I did try to 'treat myself' so to speak with natural ways, which luckily helped.
Treating anxiety without medication works, I'm a living proof of it, however this is just my personal insight and journey of discovery - I'm by no means a doctor or a patient. I just hope the tips that helped me will help you as well. If the situation warrants, do consult a medical practitioner.
During the time I was fighting my battle with anxiety panic attacks, I tried many pills. I've been given a lot of medication. From Xanax, Klonipin to Atavin, I've tried them all. If one wouldn't work, then back to the doctor I went, and he prescribed me something else. Or one seemed to work, until after a few weeks, when it lost its effect on me. Then back to the doctor I went, and he prescribed me something else. Or until I ran out of the pills. Then the story was: down to the pharmacy I went, to buy more, more, more pills.
Until I realised this: medication is NOT the way out of the anxiety trap. It is simply another trap. And I still had the dreaded anxiety panic attacks on my back! I've finally managed to overcome anxiety, and I will show you below how..

Various Things I've Tried
Once I recognized that treating anxiety with medication was not the answer, I started lateral thinking. I said to myself, there must be a way to overcome anxiety without taking pills after pills. I do believe in a holistic approach, rather than a symptom cure.
I tried several things, herbal teas, aromatherapy, eating healthier, and I've even picked up Reiki and meditation, both which helped me a great deal. In fact drinking a nice cup of chamomile tea after a session of guided meditation calms me down even today like nothing much else.

Using Simple Herbs Helped A Great Deal
- Like I mentioned before, chamomile was something that I really enjoyed drinking as a tea. Once I got used to its weird taste, that is. But now, one year after I've overcome anxiety without medication, I still enjoy drinking the occasional cup of chamomile tea. It's very soothing, and very good for the stomach too. I call it the natural aspirin!
- Numerous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of kava in reducing anxiety, with effects observed after as few as one to two doses. However, there is some concern that kava may be harmful to the liver. So, after reading up on it, I didn't really try it, to be honest. If you've tried kava and had luck with it, please leave me a note in the comments section.
- They say that that passion flower, valerian and theanine also may reduce anxiety and are generally considered to be safe herbs, with few reported adverse side effects, so the should be pretty safe. I've tried valerian extract, but best to use it is this way: If you are using the herb, use one teaspoon of powdered valerian root in one pint of boiling water for ten minutes in a covered pot. Strain and add honey to taste. Drink one cup per day before bed.
- Ginseng. We've all heard of ginseng. It's an energy booster, and it lifts the spirit. When you are in one of your anxiety moods, a bit of spirit lifting is always a good thing :)
- If you have headaches due to anxiety (I used to have them, they were one of my major symptoms), then try meadowsweet. Either drink the tea or use the extract.
- St. John's Worth is a pretty popular herb used for controlling stress and depression.
Herbal Mixes I Recommend In Overcoming Anxiety Naturally
- A nice soothing tea: Blend lavender, oats, linden flower, catnip, and lemon balm (equal quantities). Use four teaspoons of this mixture per quart of boiling water. Pour the water over the herbs and steep for about ten minutes. Strain and drink while the tea is still warm. Drink a cup after each meal, up to six cups a day if necessary.
- A strong nerve tonic that I've read somewhere and used a lot. It relaxes your mind and encourages mental harmony.
4 parts rosemary leaves
2 parts sage
1 part goldenseal powdered root
3 parts skullcap powdered herb
2 parts valerian powdered root
- Also if you like soaking in the bath, use either herbs or essential oils of lavender, thyme, lemon balm and chamomile. Put a few drops of each of these oils, and let the water run as hot as you can safely enjoy. These baths used to be some of the highlights of my periods plagued by anxiety panic attacks.
The Next Step - Using Meditation And Reiki
The next step for me was to learn to meditate and I've also picked up Reiki for the purpose of self-healing. Level 1 was more than enough, however right now I'm at level 2, which also enables me to heal others from distance (distance healing).
For meditation I mostly use guided meditation CDs, and when I do Reiki healing on myself, I listen to gentle Reiki music in the background that doesn't disturb the session.

Here are some of the books that I bought that helped me with my anxiety and panic attack symptoms. Even just knowing what I was going through with the use of the books made me feel much better. Knowing that all I had was anxiety, and not something serious in terms of fatal disease or anything, was a great step in restoring my confidence that I could do it and get healthy once again - on my own.

It took years for me to recover fully but thankfully a very wise counselor explained the physical affects of trauma to me so I was aware that the feelings I was experiencing were completely normal and would diminish with time. Great info. I'd like to add that sometimes, food sensitivities can cause/trigger anxiety/depression. Namely gluten and MSG. If you suspect this, proving it is as simple as going on the "virgin" diet. It made a huge difference with my anxiety. I also take "Perfect Calm" vitamin supplements.

ive been struggling with really bad anxiety for the past two years. I recently read a womens blog here on the internet (im sorry i don't remember the name) and she says that meditation and trying to calm yourself of your anxiety is a mistake. she stresses that it is good for overall mental health but not anxiety. Our conscious mind blocks our subconscious, so when we meditate we silence our conscious mind leaving only our subconscious (which is the where all our worries and anxiety come from) So in a way, you could be activating your anxiety even more when you meditate. I don't really understand anxiety, and where it comes from, but i struggle with it everyday. I like the herb remedies you've listed, i will try them thank you for posting this... i would love to be the same confident person i was 2 years ago.

I was experiencing some heavy panic attacks several years ago and realized it was caffeine that was causing it. I stopped drinking beverages that contained it and have had very few attacks since. Hey im 15 and have anxiety..ive been on medication for about 3 months taking alprozalam if needed and bupropion morning and night. I feel like my life has changed a lot and this anxiety is really affecting it. I wanna accomplish my goals. Of play pro soccer one day but this on top of my asthma has made it really hard to practice anymore.

Meditation helps. I find that it has a calming influence on me. When I feel stressed and feel anxiety begins to take hold, meditation or just a simple breathing exercise is adequate to calm the nerves.

Great lens! You can also use ylang ylang essential oil in your bath, massage oil, aromatherapy diffuser...it also helps to relieve anxiety. I think clary sage is also good for that too, but it's been a while since I read about that one. Also, I've read that using the flowers/leaves of ginseng, goldenseal, and valerian is just as effective as using the root and it doesn't kill the plant. With the commercial popularity of those herb roots, it's been overharvested without planting a lot more of them to sustain demand.

I have suffered very bad anxiety attacks, and al the doctors wanted to do was give medication, eventually, fed up being a walkign zombie I looked for alternatives, learning about my condition "syncope" where I get stressed,/anxiety, sneeze and faint! (weird huh) now I can spot the starting signs, take myself off to my bed, lavander cream on my forehead and my ipod with really relaxing music (I think jjust now I love mind, body and soul, real calm natural sounds) this is enough to stop the full attack coming on, and stop me from sneezing and fainting (well works 9 times out of 10 and I haven't been back to hospital since devising the little pre syncope attack plan :) anxiety is awful, and the medication makes you feel even more awful, so it is important to try to find a solution without relying on too much medication

I'm still on the road to recovery from them, after hiding them for two years. I got to a point where it effected my walking. It's surprising how many people suffer when you 'come out'. I wouldn't wish them on anybody. Some great advise here. What's helped me most is not being scared of them and not trying to fight them and not trying to be strong or pull yourself together. The more you try the harder it gets and you only make your nervous system worse. You have to learn to go with the flow of them. Books by Dr Claire Weekes really helped me.

Anxiety and lack of confidence became a big thing for me when I developed balance and coordination problems following the onset of Otosclerosis in my right ear. I have found that if I start to feel overwhelmed or anxious it is usually over something that has upset me before. I keep telling myself to stay calm and remember that I dealt with it before so I can deal with it again.
However, I love the ideas you outline here and the fact that natural remedies can take the place of drugs.

I've suffered from anxiety and panic attacks for years if various degrees. At its worse not being able to go out and having dark thoughts. Thankfully things are improved and I haven't had a panic attack for over 4 years. Strange as it might sound it took my mum being diagnosed and dying of cancer 3 months later for me to finally take back control. After having gone through such a life changing experience now when I feel a little panicky I just think "I got through losing mum without a panic attack and if I can do that then isn't gonna cause it" For the first time I feel stronger than the panic attacks. That's the gift mum gave me and the one little positive i take away from that experience.
Getting back on topic even though I still take medication daily (I am allowed to self medicate from 25mg to 75mg per day myself) it doesn't both me as psychologically it's my safety net and allows me to function and have a good life.
I do also use meditation, yoga and breathing techniques I've learnt as I haven't quite managed to shake the anxiety side of things yet.
Something else I use with great success is Bachs Rescue Remedy which comes in various forms and I have a number of products dotted around in bags, car glove boxes etc.
Anyhow I've rambled on long enough but just wanted to give my experience and wisdom and say what a great lens! :)

Life does become easier when we can take better care of ourselves, naturally. I had the problem of being on medication for several years. Economy forced me off the pills, just couldn't afford them. I am a firm believer in herbal remedies. People have to realize that they can have side effects too, just like medicines. I can't take St. John's Wort, as it makes me feel really freaky. Read everything you can about an herb before trying it, and start out slowly to see if you have any bad reactions to it. Ideally, you should be under the care of a Holistic doctor. @ViJuvenate: I agree, anxiety is typically caused by a stresseful event(s) that come up in our lives. We can deal with them or suppress them. Those who suppress deal with anxiety and depression later when it all comes out and then the doctors just mask the symptoms with meds. If you deal with the problem(s) that cause the event then you WILL overcome the anxiety and actually be better off then before! I've found that counseling works best. It helps get to the root of the problem and then the symptoms slowly disapate. It helps you stay off the fairies wheel of anxiety medications.

Lemon Balm. Specifically, a dropper full of tincture made from the herb is great for anxiety, depression, insomnia, and some stomach ailments. My guess is that it works best on digestive disorders related to nerves...like a nervous stomach or IBS. I keep it around for insomnia. :)

In these specail days of year ending and new year, many persons are depressed and anxious because they have no money to buy gifts or haven't a good health to spend nice parties with friends or family. Pastiche, that is a great idea and if you can pull it off, it's one of the best ways to minimize stress and anxiety. Unfortunately not everyone can afford (or is willing) to do it.
