This is neither provocation, nor a joke: male gender became really seriously endangered by effects of pollution and chemicals we use on daily basis, . Women are also facing various serious health problems, because of same reasons, but problems that male gender is facing, are obviously much more dramatic, because pollution is directly affecting production of testosterone and through that, all what is connected with male health, sexuality, virility and identity- is also negatively affected.

Why is that?

Have you ever heard about endocrine disruptors?

They are various chemicals, we use in everyday life that have ability to disrupt physiological function of endocrine glands, because they act like hormones in endocrine system.

People are very much hormonal beings, all our activities and body functions are closely related to hormones: even tiny amount of hormones or hormonally active agents can influence our hormonal balance and cause emotional outbursts or strange mood swings, changes in our way of perceiving reality, can cause serious diseases and malformations - especially if we are permanently exposed to them.

The most interesting part of their influence is how they affect our sexuality expression, sexual identity and also cause various diseases and alterations of human reproductive system. Majority of these chemicals act as "female" estrogen hormones and estrogens are testosterone antagonists, at least to the men.It is proven that exposure to these chemicals are causing to male gender:

  • serious problems with male`s virility (quality of male`s sperm is dropping down 2% per year in industrial developed countries)
  • prostate swelling and prostate cancer is seriously rising up
  • testicular developmental disorders in newborns are rising up
  • today there is one on 2000-3000 babies born as hermaphrodite (has male and female organs developed), what is very high percentage
  • many changes are noticed in male sexual behaviour comparing to sexual behaviour of previous generations (no wonder why Viagra is today so popular)
  • feminization of men is very common

The same chemicals affect the women as well and are causing:

  • breast cancer and various tumors and cancers of other sexual organs
  • various hormonal imbalances that cause higher level of infertility then ever
  • today almost every second women have some gynecological problem - endometriosis and PCOS most commonly occur as result of exposure to endocrine disrupturs.

In addition to that:

  • there is much more hormonal imbalances in the both genders then ever (diabetes, thyroid gland disorders, imbalance of sexual hormones etc)
  • autoimmune disorders are very much influenced by hormonal imbalance
  • various tumors, cysts, cancers are obviously rising up today, few decades ago they were very rare, today tumors and cancers are common diseases
  • various neural functions are altered by endocrine disruptors (Bipolar disorder, ADD; ADHD, autism)

Not all changes we face today are so drastic, many of them are very subtle so we cannot detect them so easily, because hormones are influencing our way we perceive this world, our feelings: HORMONES WE PRODUCE AND THEIR RATIO very much DETERMINE WHO WE ARE and how we react or think or feel about ourselves and the others.

What are most common endocrine disruptors

There is very many chemicals that are "responsible" for negative influence on human hormonal system. In lower doses these chemicals are not toxic on classical way, when we are using them, we will not drop dead immediately, but they daily cause endocrine imbalance in our highly sensitive bodies.

Scroll to Continue

Endocrine disruptors which act as estrogens (Xenoestrogens) can be found in:

  • all meats we produce for human consuption, pork, chicken, turkey, beef etc. also
  • in the dairy products ( due to the hormones given to the animals)

Many chemicals acts as endocrine disruptors and artificialy rise estrogene levels:

  • plastics,
  • car excaust,
  • detergents,
  • pesticides
  • herbicides
  • various cosmetic products....etc.
  • in addition to that, there are various medications and synthetic hormones they cause serious hormonal disruption

If you think that your health is not affected by them, you are wrong !!!

Car exhaust is endocrine disruptor and raises up level of female homones - estrogens

Car exhaust acting as endocrine disruptor

Car exhaust acting as endocrine disruptor

Meats are endocrine disruptors and raise up level of female hormones - estrogenes

BTW, I deeply believe that these chemicals are also influencing sudden gender role reversal we are facing today that assured much more equality between sexes, so chemicals definitely helped that opposite genders become more cooperative among themselves- at least they helped this happens to the one part of humanity. Due to that we cannot be sad because of gradual disappearance of macho men or appearance of macho women, but things are not so simple.

What is really worrying is something completely else - quality and health of male sperm and female eggs is seriously dropping down, what is damaging DNA (in sperm and eggs ) and due to that, many people are giving birth to hormonally altered or unhealthy children with all sorts of health problems.

In addition to that, even if DNA of parents is still reasonably healthy, in fetal period, future child is exposed to various sorts of chemicals that act as hormones, that interfere with normal development of fetus, and after child is born, he/she will be during the whole life-time be exposed to these chemicals, so there is hardly chance of improvement. .

When there is hormonal imbalance in one endocrine gland, it produces, as chain reaction, imbalance of all other hormones, and hormones are the most responsible for our well being, because without them there is not proper communication between cells, tissues, organs. When there is not communication, confused cells become ill.

In the past 50 years scientific researches have clearly shown a continual decline in semen quality accompanied by an increase in male reproductive disorders. Problem starts in fetal period. Fetus is extremely vulnerable to the negative effect of endocrine disroptors, esoecially between 8-12 weeks of pregnancy when fetus starts to developed male or female characteristics. If there is too much chemicals in the body of the mother that act as testosterone antagonists, they negatively influence normal development of male sexual organs and endocrine glands. Afterwards this is causing problems with virility, various sexual problems, can affect even sexual identity, endocrine imbalance and is causing all health problems I mentioned in the first chapter.

Wildlife and small penises of alligators

Alligators developed MICROPENIS syndrome

Alligators developed MICROPENIS syndrome

Frogs very often hermaphrodites

Frogs very often hermaphrodites

Alterations in male reproduction were first time observed in wild animals, when is discovered that accidental exposure of estrogenic chemicals on wildlife in the natural environment is causing changes in male reproductive function: Changes discovered vary from very subtle changes to permanent alterations, such as feminization or changes in sexual organs.

Especially popular is study of the male reproductive functions of alligators in two lakes in Florida. They found that adult male alligators in Apopka Lake, which was polluted with agricultural waste and experienced a major chemical spill in 1980, had low testosterone levels and due to that very small penises (micropenises) and disorganized testes. At the time study is made, chemicals could not be detected in water any more, but they stayed deponed in body of animals living in lake.

In addition to the alligators, serios alterations of reproductive activity and reproductive organs, feminization of male organs and other problems with physiology is docummented all around the world in fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals and is correlated with exposure of contaminants..

With endocrine pollutants we are helping to extinction of animal species, with sexual organs altered, they cannot procreate any more.

The change IS NOT IRREVERSABLE: if pollutant is removed, after some time, alterations stop to appear and animals start to normally reproduce again.

What can we do ?

What can you do for solving the problem?

1. Avoid pollutants as much as possible

2. Clean your system from toxins and chemicals

3. Use various natural remedies for attaining hormonal balance

(I am warmly recommending my homeopathic remedies, if interested, please contact me on I prepare special combinations for producing the "right" hormones, healing any type of endocrine imbalance, detoxification, according to the need of every person ) Homeopathy IS the best choice, because homeopathics and other vibrational remedies ARE NOT affected by polluters.

4. Buy organically grown food

5. Grow your own garden (and do not use nor pesticides neither herbicides)

6. Spend as much time as possible in the nature.

7. Press governments to stop pollution of this world (some of the endocrine disruptors are already forbidden, so case is NOT hopeless, on the contrary)

8. Go green on every possible way

9. If you are not completely healthy and face any endocrine problem or are exposed to polluters, heal yourself completely before deciding to have a child.

Our environment can be saved if we really give it a try, through that human health as well. Remember that damage we have done is still REVERSABLE .

I wish you all the best health possible,

Wow, Dyonder, your comment is certainly the most valuable one, because you are giving very realistic example of bad pollution influence on population of Caribbean islands:

"Since 80´s the boys began growing breasts, and the girls started growing testicles" ...due tu the industrial waste from Florida, carried by ocean. The problem is still present on Caribbean islands.

Do these factories still dump their waste into the ocean?

Thank you so much, I appreciate your comment very much.

D A Moore from Colorado on January 08, 2010:

Once again, Thank You Tatjana-Mihaela for another well written, informative hub. I recall in the early 80's children on one of the islands of the Caribbean began to develop oddly once puberty hit. The boys began growing breasts, and the girls started growing testicles. Research was done, and once the investigations were complete it was discovered that hormones (dumped as waste) from factories on the Florida coast line were being carried by ocean currents and ingested by fish which were in turn eaten by the island's residents (and fed to their growing children). That was over twenty five years ago. It amazes me such developments are still occurring (to varying degrees). It always boils down to personal choice, if we do not buy the products, or use the merchandise which leads to these effects we can (will) institute a change.

Hi, Doahhh, Craig!

I am so sorry to hear your "sad testosterone story", haha.

Testosterone is not meant to be only for sexuality it has much more important purposes (impulsiveness, energy, action, it helps that brain gets developed) ... Women have testosterone as well, but, thanks God or universe, in smaller quantity then men, I say thanks God, because excess of testosterone is very often - impatience and aggressiveness.

People from "older generations" had completely different hormonal levels, due to the fact they they were born in different world, that was much less polluted.

Personally, from social point of view, I am not sorry that men today are loosing testosterone, without excess of testosterone, they are more ready to cooperate, they are better friends...and they make much less troubles in relationships...and in overall society. What is worrying are other effects on health, and all what I mentioned above.

Thank you for song, it is beautiful.

Please, go to my Hub that I wrote last year for Xmass,

Why only us males? :)

Mortgagestar1 from Weirton,West Virginia on January 07, 2010:

Throughout my entire fifty years here on planet Earth, I have seen the male image being pushed and pulled in every direction. It appears every decade that women are seeking a different template for a man.

In the 1940's it was the John Wayne cowboy Hollywood strong type. The 1950's was the James Dean wild and uninhibited leatherclad bad bad follwed in the 60's by the ultra sensitive and social " Make love not war ' dreamer. How can we forget the 1970's urban intellectual man about the worldly cultural bing intouch with his feminine side. The 1980's brought us androgyny with punk rock and teh hair bands. The 90's were the bisexuality and " Metro Man " and now men are into anything goes.

As for chemicals and cosmetic enhancements, this is a sign of the times of men competing with younger guys. The Cougar women are all the rage from poparazzi to dating services. The modern male are noe urged to administer botox, chemical peels, implants, and testostore theapies.

I routinely travel to Europe and depending on the location, men may not use deodorant and cologne. We Americans live in a nearly sterile environment and may be hurting our own natural defenses.

As for pollution, I lved through the days when Pittsburgh was in perpectual darkness from factories and now see how American technology and legislation has done more to clean up the planet than any other nation. The most polution I see are from the ecology fraud and riff raff spewing lies to line the pockets from so - call man made global environmental trends. Notice these hypocrates are living in polluted filled limosines and manisions.

Springboard from Wisconsin on January 07, 2010:

Pollution is certainly a problem, and all one need do is walk down his city's downtown streets to see that there's something going on there...

Governments and corporations have to work together to find solutions and alternatives to the everyday items we've become accustomed to to make them safer and more enviromentally friendly.

We have, of course, done this before. If you'll remember a while back the U.S. banned the use of CFCs in aerosol cans as they had discovered they were depleting the ozone layer. And while its not necessarily on topic with pollution, government officials in New York City and in California have banned the use of trans fatty acids in restaurants. Denmark and Switzerland have effectively banned trans fats altogether.

Recognition of problems is the first step. Being aware as a general population is equally important so that we can make responsible, personal decisions as to what we buy and use, and how it affects our health and our environment.

I have much more difficulties in healing hormonal problems of people who are regular meat-consumers, with that ones who are vegetarians, or eat meat rarely, healing is much more easier and quicker.

At this moment I do not have my own garden, but used to have it for 4 years, and I really had 10 times more energy then now. You are right, but despite what's being done to us by the food industry, (to women as well as men), it's easy to free up testosterone that's been bound up by SHBG.

We are actually doing it to ourselves by not seeking out and eating the right foods.

This is fascinating! I had heard that sterility had increased - I've heard a few theories and one is that cheap junk food is a source - I haven't looked into it yet! What you said about meat made me think of Ayurvedic medicine - have you heard of the tamasic foods? According to Ayurveda certain food types produce negative energy and meat is one of them. Actually, I'm not sure it causes hormonal imbalance but it causes anger, depression, etc. Your advice is very sound - going green is definitely a big step forward. I wish I was capable of growing my own garden but I fear I may do more danger to wildlife than good if I did!

Thank you so much Livelonger for your comment.

About soy: If someone eats a lot home-made food, soy can be found only in soy-meals. So moderate quantity is OK.

Actually eating a lot of soy is excellent for women because phytoestrogens are affecting normal production of both female hormones, progesterone and estrogens especially in (peri)menopausal period and soy is not causing progesterone/estrogen imbalance. Soy is great protection against breast cancer.

Moderate soy intake cannot cause any harm to the men as well, because phytoestrogens are very tender and not have any effect on testosterone, actually soy is protecting against prostate cancer.

Many frightening stories about soy is recently made up by meat industry, because soy is perfect replacement for meat: has much more proteins then meat and all amino-acids. After that discovery, meat industry started to frighten people with phytoestrogens, especially men.

Phytoestrogens cannot be compared with xenoestrogens, neither by final effect, neither to strength.

It is also good to know that all cattle and poultry is fed mainly by soy...and artificial hormones for fast growth and antibiotics.

But: putting the soy everywhere in the meals without any knowledge of people is not very clever and certainly not recommendable. In addition to adding soy, in such food are also many other artificial substances added so all in all, majority of food is more harmful then healthy, especially processed food.

Thank you very much, LL, appreciate your comment very much. I wish you very Happy New Year.

You always give such great information about everything related to health, politics, and unexplainable phenomenon (UFOs). Thanks so much Tatjana-Mihaela. I hope that you had a wonderful New Year's!

Well, BKC, I belive that people became so stupid and stuborn in polluting the world also because of polluters. These chemicals ovbiously have ability to make us very slow in analyses, not logical, fearful, suspicios, stuborn in self-destruction...even help us to constantly escape reality and that we never grow up.

Every person that changes, improves the chances that this world change.

Thank you so much for your nice comment.

Hi, Tony, so glad to see you here.

You are right, thanks for this explanation, now all seems much more logical.

Hehe, as a vegetarian, I am not on the top of food chain at the same way as people who eat meat are.

Wishing you very happy 2010, love and hugs.

Thank you Mary, every change helps, little by little.

I always wondered, why are so many people so...mentally slow and confused. Certainly pollution also helped to increase all human problems.

Price is big factor that prevent of all us going green as much as we would want to - so pressing the governments to change the economy principles is certainly the way.

Very Happy 2010, Love and light.

Great hub. Don't forget soy (soya), which has two naturally-occurring phytoestrogens (plant estrogens) called daidzein and genistein. Soy has been increasing in our food supply.

I've been reading quite a bit about this so I know it is not a joke. I've read that the US and Japan are already seeing a serious decline in male births - as a rule more males are born than females but that is changing. There was report on tv that many of our fish ponds are filled with only females because of this effect of estrogen.

We know our fish are filled with mercury and other deadly toxins but still we pollute. We can't continue to pollute the way we do and act as if we are invincible - we are not and never were! But it seems we enjoy living in denial. I don't know why.

Thanks for an informative hub.

Mr Nice from North America on January 05, 2010:

Hi Tatjana,

Another great hub,our systems are already loaded with pesticides due to bioamplification. The idea of boiamplification is that the animals higher up in the food chain, such as humans, have a higher concentration of pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, etc.

An example of this is when the pesticides applied to the plants runoff into the oceans, lakes, or fisheries, these pesticides are ingested by small fish when they consume plankton, these small fish have a small concentration of pesticides in their bodies. A larger fish will consume many of these small fish, so they have a higher concentration of pesticides in their bodies. We then consume these fish in great quantities, resulting in an extremely high concentration of pesticides in our bodies.

Our intestines are now pesticide-producing factories due to the amount of pesticide in all the food we eat. Many people have developed allergies due to pesticides. After the green revolution, started people begin developing allergies before that people don't have any allergies. All the hormonal changes & many other diseases are caused by these harmful substances. Happy new year

Love, peace & always happiness for you........

Its interesting, today, I was tempted to buy a non pollutant detergent, but put it aside and picked the regular one as it was pricey. You are so right, the hormones does affect how we feel, percieve the world. Just with me going through menopause last year, I didn't feel up to par with the hormone flacutations; so I can imagine what the pollutants do for us as a species. Also, I have been thinking of changing the cosmetics I use to natural ones, and can make further changes little by little; every step helps the environment.

As usual, a very informative article.

And, Happy New Year! :)
