Blackstrap Molasses: Nutrition Information


White cane sugar is the source of blackstrap molasses. But unlike white cane sugar, blackstrap molasses has many health benefits.

Blackstrap molasses is one of the richest sources of natural dietary iron and is the source of several other vitamins and minerals.

One tablespoon of blackstrap molasses daily provides up to 20% of the recommended daily value of the following nutrients:

  • Calcium
  • Copper
  • Zinc
  • Phosphoric acid
  • All of the B vitamins (with the exception of vitamin B1).


Types of Blackstrap Molasses

Blackstrap molasses comes from the third boiling of the sugar cane.

Sulfured blackstrap molasses is the product of young (green) sugar cane with sulfur dioxide added as a preservative.

Unsulfured blackstrap molasses is the product of mature sugar cane. The quality of blackstrap molasses depends on the sugar cane maturity and also the extraction process used.


Incorporate Blackstrap Molasses Into Your Diet

  • Mix 1 teaspoon in 6 ounces of hot water
  • Add a teaspoon to your coffee or hot tea
  • Add a teaspoon to a smoothie
  • Molasses Milk:

1 Tablespoon Blackstrap Molasses

8 ounces Milk

Ice

  • Very hot water (enough to cover the molasses)

Add molasses to a glass and add hot water to cover the molasses.

Stir until the molasses is dissolved.

Add ice and then top off with milk.

Molasses Crackles

Preheat oven to 325 degrees

2/3 cup canola (or other) oil

1 cup sugar

1 egg

1/4 cup blackstrap molasses

2 cups all- purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon ginger

1 teaspoon cloves

1 Tablespoon water

Mix oil and sugar and beat well.

Add egg and beat well.

Stir in molasses,flour, baking soda and spices.

If needed add more flour by Tablespoon until dough is firm.

Shape into walnut sized balls.

Roll each ball in additional sugar.

Place balls 3 inches apart on ungreased baking sheet.

Bake approximately 8 minutes. Watch for the tops to crack.

I started adding black strap molasses to my coffee in the morning. It's not as gross as it sounds (it's actually pretty good) and I generally feel better when I remember to do it. It's better for me than refined sugar, in any case.

Most of my patients have found that Blackstrap Molasses benefits them greatly, especially women who experience menstrual problems. The main staples in my house while growing up were not flour, sugar, tea and coffee. They were Blackstrap Molasses, Bragg's Apple Cider Vinegar, Brewer's Yeast and Cod Liver Oil. May not sound appetizing, but we never got acne and never got sick. I LOVE a glass of cold milk with a Tbsp of Molasses stirred in, never did the hot water first. I never heard that it could reverse grey hair. I guess I will find out in 3 months...
