7 Ways to Bid Goodbye to Stress Without Medical Assistance

A Yoga Trainer, Therapist and Research Scholar, delving deep into the world of ancient knowledge.

Today I will be sharing self-devised and self-tested methodology to deal this disguised enemy called stress. After suffering silently and unknowingly from this, my mental and physical health gave me an awakening signal. I realized gradually that I was fighting against a self -made problem. After reading many science journals on this topic, I got to know about Stress better. Being avid reader, I also read many spiritual literatures ultimately helping in devising my own methodology to tackle this problem.

What if I fail in college?

What if I get divorced?

What if I am not able to meet my deadline?

What if my kids won’t listen to me?

What if I don’t get promotion?

What if my business empire collapses?

What if my love rejects me?

This list of stressors is endless. Anyone of these are enough to trigger a set of chemical reaction in one’s body. Stress in small quantity can be beneficial as it enables the body to avoid dangers or meet certain deadline. But prolonged stress causes many psychosomatic diseases like peptic ulcer or depression. The hypothalamus gland gets activated in response to stressor. Then it releases stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones help body to deal with unpleasant situations. Finally action packed sequence of responses sets in in the body which are very taxing to the human metabolism. In long run, the internal organs along with mind, are adversely affected.

Let me share my techniques that helped me to get off my gloomy face.

1.Reboot Your Brain

This is also called conditioning of mind. Jot down your daily schedule. Allot time to every task according to its priority. Make a weekly plan including Sunday. Always set aside some quality time for yourself. It may be 15 minutes only but that time will be yours used for doing things you enjoy most. If your schedule is too tight, then wake up little early than usual. Initially it’s difficult to follow this but very effective in long run. These baby steps are perquisite of peaceful and stress free life.

Make a habit of being thankful for all you have instead of nagging about all those things you don’t have. Now as you are reading this article, about 1.5 million people slept yesterday forever never to see today’s sunshine. Luckily you were not one of them- neither your friends and family were in this list of deeds. This is a moment of celebration which everyone misses each morning. Rejoice for being alive to see another day. There are so many things to give you immense happiness, if you change your perception towards life. Gratitude always makes one humble, content, and happy. Remember, money can’t buy you happiness but the process of earning definitely derails your tranquility.

3.Loving Yourself

We always think how to have harmonious and cordial relationships with others. What we never get time for, neither care for is knowing ourselves. Until we are happy, we cannot make other people around us happy. Often we brutally judge ourselves if we fail. Failure is not the end of life but a small part or phase. The abysmal self-esteem is detrimental for a happy and fruitful life.

Stand in front of a mirror. Say loudly that, “you are the most beautiful creation of the cosmos. You can do everything you want. You have a lovely smile. You are happy now and forever.”

Speak to yourself such kind words. Their warm appreciation has a soothing effect on the mind and body. Give a tight hug to yourself.

4.Practising some yogic exercises

Yoga and meditation are powerful tools for bringing positive affirmations and physical changes in one’s life. These days many tutorials, videos and texts are available both offline and online regarding yoga. Practise some breathing exercises when stressed out.

In life, there are many instances which are out of our control. For example, if stuck in a traffic jam, instead of panicking, enjoy your favourite music, or call a loved one and talk. while waiting for an important meeting to start, practise breathing exercises to relax.

5.Developing a hobby

Nature has gifted everyone with some latent talent. One should explore their inner self to find that ‘quality’. Pursuing a hobby deflects the mind from the routine life and gives good stimulation for the brain.

6.Be in sync with nature

Nature is the best healer. Activate the fine senses of the body by being in sync with your surroundings. Touch a beautiful flower. Feel the sensation of its soft texture. Let your eyes imbibe the different shades of its colour. Your nose will tell you about its aroma. While doing this, you will forget every stress and pain. Enjoy the petrichor after rain. Walk barefoot on the lawn and let the grass tickle your feet and let your hands feel the raindrops. Focus your mind on all these small pleasures which surely a million dollars cannot buy. If you live in a concrete jungle, in a tiny apartment, you can still be in touch with nature, here’s how. Keep indoor plants and plan a walk in the nearby park or garden, beaches or hill station according to your schedule.

7.Eat healthy and timely

Last but not the least, food plays an important role in our lives. Add lots of fresh fruits and vegetables instead of popping up multivitamins and energy supplements. Have fresh juices instead of packaged ones, choose freshly prepared food over take-away. Various types of chemicals creep in the food due to such shelved food items. Sprouts and nuts are always healthy choices, so next time, snack on those instead of processed chips.

These are some of the dynamic changes which have transformed me from a gloomy faced to a happy person. Incorporate the above mentioned tricks into your lifestyle to say goodbye to your stress.
