  • Up your vitamin C intake. Eat foods rich in vitamin C to help lower uric acid. This includes consuming foods including (but not limited to): oranges, tangerines, mandarins, red cabbage, red bell peppers, and potatoes.
  • Eat fresh vegetables and fruit. Make sure that you consume at least five servings of fresh vegetables and fruit every day to help flush uric acid out of your body. (Note: But make sure that you are careful about avoiding cauliflower, asparagus, and mushrooms which may contribute to increasing your uric acid production because of their moderately high levels of purine.)
  • Drink water. It's very important to keep hydrated. You should drink at least 12 eight ounce glasses of water throughout the day. This will help your kidneys process and flush excess uric acid from your body more effectively.
  • Avoid purines. Avoid high-purine foods like: offal (such as liver), meat extracts, red meat, meat broths, game, poultry, some vegetables (as mentioned already, specifically cauliflower, asparagus, and mushrooms), some types of fish (including mackerel), shellfish, legumes, yeast products, and alcohol. The more purines you consume, the more uric acid is being produced.
  • Eat cherries. Cherries have natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Consume at least 20 cherries everyday—more if possible. You can also drink cherry juice or eat dried cherries.
  • Lower your sugar intake. If possible, avoid sugar in all its forms, especially in processed foods and sugary drinks like juices and sodas.

Since everyone is different, you'll find that what works well for one person might not work as well for another. Because of this, it's very important to seek out and try other remedies until you find the one (or more likely the combination) that works best for your individual circumstances.   • Reduce alcohol consumption. As mentioned, it's best to avoid or greatly reduce alcohol intake since excessive alcohol can lead to high uric acid. Too much alcohol is a known trigger for gout attacks.
  • Lose weight healthily. If you are 30 pounds or more over your ideal weight, then you are at a much higher risk for gout. An overweight person has more body tissue to break down. So, work to get those extra pounds off through a sensible diet and exercise.

Thank you for writing what is good to prevent or fix gout. I was concerned about the gout disease because it is rare. I found out through your article the things to take in case. We get any gout disease. I know a lady that has a severe case of join problems. Just like the symptoms you are describing on your hub. She is an older lady. Vince, you did the right thing, especially drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated. This helps your kidneys to expel uric acid more easily. And oranges, tangerines, etc. have vitamin C which is great for helping to get rid of gout.

i ate 4 ice ream sandwich then 3 days later i ate 4 more a better brand, the next day my left big toe started to hurt in the joint, but according to the pain it ways mild but hurt, the first thing i did was put ice on it, 20 minutes twice a day, the third evening i could squeez the toe, with little pain, oh i ate oranges, and drunk plenty of water .

Tracy, someone who is overweight is more at risk of high uric acid and thus gout than a person who isn't overweight. Now you are on a healthier diet and an exercise regimen then, as long as you stick with it, you should be fine. Keep positive!

Over the years I have had such a bad lifestyle, smoked, drank, ate all the rubbish under the sun. Im over weight, and did no exercise. It has all taken its toll. At age 40 I was diagnosed with Cluster headaches, at 41 I had the heart attack and now at 43, gout. It's so true, we are what we eat! There is consquences to everything we eat be it good consequences or bad ones. What happened to life begins at 40 !!

Tracy, a sudden change in diet can sometimes trigger a gout attack in some people, so maybe your new diet has had some impact.

If you stick to your healthy diet (as long as it's approved by your doctor) your metabolism will adjust and your uric acid levels should return to normal over time.

But you're right to be aware of other lifestyle issues as well. Again, always liaise with your doctor about these things.

Thanks for that, I am willing to try anything as the pain is horrendous. The doctor gave me Colchicine yesterday but as yet they haven't helped. I have to finish the course so maybe it will take a few days. I don't understand it, I have rently changed my diet, for the better and have done a lot more exercise, as I had a heart attack. Now I am laid up with this. I just need to make more lifestyle changes to ensure I don't get repeat bouts of it, I suppose.

Tracy, I feel for you, I really do. I used to have chronic gout and the pain was excruciating. But by following the kind of things I talk about in my article I've managed to stay gout free for several years now.

I tried jucing(kale,1apple,1orange,coconut milk)every morning, and eating 5 fruits and veggies, eating little (salmon twice a week with tummeric). The pain in my foot has left and i am not limping.
