Get ready, get set, now GO buy some games for senior citizens!
Looking for some good old fashioned family fun to share on Valentine's Day or Christmas or, well, any day of the year? Dive into a few of these great games for senior citizens with the grandparents and you just might be surprised at what you'll learn. It's a great way to spend some quality time with our loved elders.
My Mom lived with me for the 5 years before she died so I had a lot of time to explore good games for senior citizens. Mom and I enjoyed playing cards so I invested in a few decks of large print cards. I was a bit reluctant to note that the large print playing cards were really as nice for me as they were for my favorite senior citizen! As Mom's arthritis flared, I came up with a way for her to 'hold' her cards - I got a long container and filled it with split peas. She could just stand her cards up in any order she wanted. I've since found that there are actual items on the market to aid our senior citizens in playing cards...but, really, who the heck knew?
Mom and I would also play older board games such as Monopoly, Scrabble or even Clue but we also would have fun just reading the cards from a Trivial Pursuit game. Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune (the TV shows and games...) were also great fun.
So, come along with me as we ramble (slowly) down the path to some great games for senior citizens.

Playing card holders
Aging hands sometimes have a hard time holding playing cards. And, since playing cards can stimulate the mind, how about investing in a few of these playing card holders? A playing card holder and a deck of large format playing cards would be a fun Valentine's Day gift for a favorite senior citizen.
I thought I was being pretty spiffy when I thought up my own playing card holder for my Mom - I gave her a tray filled with split peas and she just dug her cards in. The split peas worked wonderfully - until we had a spill...what a mess. These real playing card holders would have been much nicer:

For those with a hard time seeing, low vision large print playing cards are a must
I have a few decks of these large print playing cards myself and really love them - I don't have to wear my glasses while in a rousing game of Gin Rummy!

Very LARGE playing cards
I'm not really sure these large format playing cards would be easier to handle for a senior citizen (and I no longer have Mom to test them out on) but I sure think they're fun looking. These would be a great gift for a senior citizen or a smaller child.

Trivial Pursuit - the 1920 - 1950s version
My folks and I used to love to read the Trivial Pursuit questions just for fun. I wish I had known about this 1920-1950s version as I think it would have been quite entertaining and I'm pretty sure they would have won. I'm also sure that I would have heard some new stories if we had played this game.
Don't let my mistake be yours - buy this game for your favorite senior citizen. Let the fun begin!
Walk down memory lane with the board game Reminiscing
If your favorite senior citizen loves to recant their life, this Reminiscing board game will delight them. Centering on times from the 1940s to the 1990s, past events, fads, memories, music and clothing will be remembered.
Wheel of Fortune board game
I can hear you laughing. How do I know you're laughing? Because I've been there, done that...Wheel of Fortune? Really?....
When Mom moved in with me right after Dad died, Wheel of Fortune was a regular part of our nightly routine. I thought it was the worst game until...something happened. I got stumped! What??? How's that possible?! So, I started paying more attention and, lo and behold! I fell in love with the game! So, give it a chance....Anyway...
When I was putting together this article, it dawned on me how long it's been since I've been in a toy store. Ages, I tell ya, ages! Anyway, there are now Wheel of Fortune game version for everything> including the Sony PlayStation, Mac OS, Windows 7, Nintendo, Xbox...you name it, there's a Wheel of Fortune for it. Amazing. Anyway, the Wheel of Fortune game her is the more basic, modern version where there's an actual board, wheel and money.
If your senior citizen friend loves puzzles, don't let arthritic hands hold them back - Large Piece Jigsaw Puzzles
Large piece puzzles are easier to work for those seniors (or anyone really) with arthritis or any other mobility issue. And, don't think that these are the easier jigsaw puzzles out there just because the pieces are big. They aren't...(voice of experience here).
I hope you got at least one valuable piece of information from this Squidoo article. I enjoyed writing it and would love for you to leave me comments.

I love these game ideas for seniors. I had no idea about the Trivial Pursuit version from way back. Love it! My dad would have been so good at that one.
