The fear of flying phobia, also known as Aerophobia is one of the most common phobias and affects many of us on a daily basis.

Most people don’t like being confined in a metal tube miles above the earth while others are more afraid of the plane crashing.

Whatever the reason for this fear, there’s one thing for sure and that is, its very disruptive for the traveler. There are many people who wont set foot on a plane, they’ll take the boat instead.

Imagine traveling to America from Europe in a boat, can you believe some people do this so that they wont have to get on a plane. It may sound ridiculous to some but to the person who has this phobia, its quite natural.

Flying without fear is a goal which most people who suffer from this phobia think they'll never succeed to do.

Fear of Flying Tips
There are many fear of flying courses available today & they all start out by telling you about plane safety. Airplane safety has improved 100 fold since the mid eighties when DC10’s used to drop out of the skies on a weekly basis.

We rarely see an airplane crash these days and when it does happen, its usually from some non western country. So, what we can learn from this is that air travel is the safest form of transport in the world, if you travel on a western airline in the 21st century, you’ll be completely safe.

However, some people still have an irrational fear of flying and so need to do something about it if they really want to overcome the fear of flying for good.

The best way to overcome this phobia is by listening to fear of flying hypnosis or fear of flying hypnotherapy recordings a couple of weeks before your flight.

You’ll be far more relaxed and should be relatively calm when you board the plane.

This phobia is very common and so it goes without saying that most of the people in the audience are also affected by it.

What this means is that everyone in the audience supports you, they want you to succeed & no one is going to laugh when if you make a cock up.

Fear of Dark Places

Fear of Dark Places

Number 4: Fear of the Dark

Being afraid of the dark is one of those fears which will forever be in the top list of common phobias. Its instinctive, we fear what we cant see. However, sometimes this fear can be so strong that it imprints onto our brain and we then have a full blown phobia.

When we are young, we are naturally afraid of the dark, we wont go to sleep unless the nightlight is on or the door is kept a jar, you remember those days, right?.

Well, some of these kids grow up and still have this fear, they cant go to sleep unless the lights are on.

This is when we realize we have a problem, no adult should be scared of the dark, its just not something we should bring into adulthood.

Fear of Spiders

Number 5: Fear of Spiders

The fear of spiders is close to the top of our common phobias list. This phobia, known as arachnophobia is usually in the domain of women as 50% of them are terrified of spiders while only 10% of men are affected.

The extent of this phobia can vary with some people having a mild form of this fear while others will panic even if they see a picture of a spider.

This fear is completely irrational as the vast majority of spiders in the western world are completely harmless. However this fact doesn’t seem to matter to anyone who is affected by this phobia.

They will panic if they come across a spider in their bathroom and will usually have to get someone else to remove it. For most, this phobia wont really have a major effect on their life but its still a nuisance all the same.

For some, it can be life altering as they spend most of their time worrying about where the next spider is going to come from.

For these people a fear of spiders hypnosis or a hypnotherapy fear of spiders recording is a viable option. Just listening to a hypnosis script recording for a few weeks twice a day can have a major effect on this phobia.

Fear of Snakes

Fear of Snakes

Fear of Snakes

Number 6: Fear of Snakes

The fear of snakes is a very common phobia and its not too hard to see why its high up in our common phobias list.

Your fear may not be just of snakes but you may have the phobia 'Herpetophobia' which is the Fear of reptiles.

Snakes are common throughout the world & live in almost all countries except for Ireland, Greenland, Iceland & New Zealand. So, if you want to avoid snakes then you’re going to have to live in a country like Ireland for example.

The weird thing about this phobia though, is that there are many people from these countries who also have this fear. They come from the 4 known countries in the world that don’t have snakes but they are still terrified of them.

So, this phobia is more in the psyche than anything else & can be cured if you take the time out to do something about it.

By listening to positive affirmations for around 14 days, you can significantly reduce your fear of snakes.

Fear of Rejection

Fear of Rejection

Fear of Rejection

Number 7: Fear of Rejection

Being rejected is one of our most common phobias and affects all of us at some stage of our lives. It affects everyone, whether you were rejected by a parent, uncle, aunt, lover or job interview, its a part of life which we cant ignore.

Some people can deal with rejection really well, while others crumble at the very thought of being rejected. This phobia could also be related to Pistanthrophobia which is the fear of getting hurt by someone in a romantic relationship.

Of course the fear of rejection is more common when it comes to the affairs of the heart than any other area of our lives. This fear can quickly turn into a full blown phobia which can affect every part of our life.

Some people will bring this phobia into every part of their life and this is where it becomes a problem. Most of us have this fear in some form or another; we will instinctively get nervous when it comes to chatting up a beautiful woman for instance.

Others can go from one woman to the next and get blown out of it and it doesn’t seem to affect them. You don’t need to be on this end of the scale but somewhere in between would be nice.

By listening to positive affirmations twice a day for a couple of weeks, you can really make some amazing progress with this phobia.

Number 8: Fear of Small Confined Spaces

Also known as claustrophobia, this phobia is on our most common phobias list as there are many people who are affected by it. Its usually something we carry from childhood when we were locked into a small cupboard by one of our friends or some other confined space.

Its a debilitating phobia because it can affect many areas of our lives from flying to small spaces at home or at work. Deep down, many people suffer from this common phobia in some form or another but most won’t admit to it.

However it becomes a real full blown phobia when panic sets in and this is how most will know they have a real problem with confined spaces.

There are many tools out there today which can help you with this fear, so if you think you have a bad case of claustrophobia, then you should think about getting help as this is one phobia anyone would rather live without.

Fear of Failure

Fear of Failure

Fear of Failure

Number 9: Fear of Failure

The fear of failure is another big fear which can turn into a full blown phobia rather quickly. It’s one of the most common phobias in the western world today.

Most people living in the west must live by certain rules if they want to succeed in life. They must get their exams, they must get that place in college, they must get the job.

Its a pretty tough call when you think about it, we are continuously trying to be winners but at some stage we are going to have to deal with failure.

Some of us can deal with the fear of failure more than others, these people put their failure down as lessons and this is how everyone should deal with this fear.

To fail at something is a natural part of the learning curve. Imagine if you never failed at anything in life, everything you touched turned into gold, how would you ever learn if this was the case.

As an example of this, take a look at all those really wealthy kids of rich & famous people, a good percentage of them will have disastrous lives filled with drugs and visits to jail cells.

This happens because they had it all put on their lap and they didn’t have to learn anything, it just all came to them, they never had to fail at anything in their lives because they didn’t have to try in the first place.

So when you look at it like this you can see how an important role failure can play in our lives, its simply an important learning aid which can shape our lives.

To help with the fear of failure phobia you should listen to positive affirmations ever day and this should have a major impact on this fear.

Fear of Intimacy

Fear of Intimacy

Fear of Intimacy

Number 10: Fear of Intimacy

The fear of intimacy or commitment phobia may sound like a strange phobia but its very real to some of us & this is why it makes it into our common phobias list.

You don’t need to run away from your partner every time they come close to have a fear of intimacy phobia.

Also know as erotophobia, It could express itself in other ways like not wanting to cuddle up on the sofa or wanting your own side of the bed to yourself at night.

It could express itself through the way we talk to our partner, like not being able to tell them you love them or not being as touchy feely as you should be.

Its quite common and it more than likely comes from some part of our childhood. Maybe our mother was cold or unemotional or our father was never present, these things can lead to intimacy issues later on in life and they can seriously affect the way we live.

Of all phobias the fear of intimacy can actually affect future generations as the sufferer will avoid contact with the opposite sex and will probably not be in a position to raise a family.

So, as you can see its quite important to fix this phobia as fast as you can and start living again.

Fear of Crowds

Fear of Crowds

Number 11: Fear of public spaces or crowds

This phobia is often misunderstood and can affect many people who otherwise would think they’re not affected by it at all.

You see, Agoraphobia is often thought of as something which affects people who have a fear of going outside the house or have a fear of crowds.

This is true to some extent but there are mild forms of this phobia which many people unknowingly have.

For instance, the fear of driving has been associated with mild forms of Agoraphobia & this is one of the reasons as to why it makes it into our common phobias list.

Its been found that in some people who are afraid of driving that they are not in fact afraid of the car itself or of meeting other cars on the road or even their driving skills but the fact that they have to leave their own geographical area.

In other words, when you drive, you have to leave the area you’re familiar with and travel to areas you’re not so familiar with.

This could be seen as a mild form of Agoraphobia and should be seen to as quickly as possible because the longer you leave it, the worse it could get.

Other mild forms of this phobia could affect the way we live, like not trying out new things, meeting new people or going to new places.

So, if you feel you may have some form of this phobia then you should start with some form of self help hypnotherapy to start with.

Did you know that you can write your own subliminal Agoraphobia recordings, you’ll be amazed with the results.

Fear Of Hospitals

Fear Of Hospitals

Fear Of Hospitals

Number 12: Fear of Hospitals

We all need to visit the hospital at some stage of our lives whether we need to be there for a relative or friend or for a personal injury or sickness & this is why this phobia makes it into our common phobias list.

The point is that we can never really escape the hospital, most of us a born in one and most of us will die in one.

There are many reasons why someone would have a fear of hospitals, it could be the fact that a family member died there and it brings up too many bad memories or there could have been a time when we had to stay in a hospital because we were injured.

Some people cant stand the smell of disinfectant when they enter the main door of a hospital, it can be repugnant to them and this could be the physiological trigger which fires up this phobia.

Although this phobia is not going to have any real major implications for your life its still a big deal for some as they will at some stage either need to visit a hospital for themselves or need to visit someone they know.

Overall, its a phobia which can easily be cured so if you feel uneasy when visiting a hospital, why not do something about it today and rid yourself of this phobia once and for all.

Fear Of Elevators

Fear of Confined Spaces

Fear of Confined Spaces

Number 13: Fear of Elevators

Often confused with Claustrophobia, Cleithrophobia is the fear of being trapped. Its one of the top common phobias & there is something more to this phobia than just the fear of enclosed spaces.

It may also be that the sufferer is also scared of heights too so they get a double blow when it comes to the elevator.

The modern elevator, although bigger than its past contemporaries, is still a small confined space in which many of us spend some part of our day in.

Its a way of life in a modern city, after all you cant climb 100 floors to your office every morning, you just wouldn’t have the time, so the only way is the elevator.

Some people panic when it comes to the elevator, they think they’ll get stuck or the elevator will come crashing down to the ground.

This is the completely irrational fear of someone who suffers from this phobia.

The truth is that a modern elevator cannot crash to the floor because there are usually three or more emergency brakes, so if it goes beyond a certain speed, they kick in and the elevator stops.

So, if you are scared of elevators then you have nothing to fear as they are completely safe.

However some will still have this phobia no matter what you tell them and for those it may be a good idea to invest in some self hypnosis CD's and this should make a real difference when it comes to this phobia.

Fear of Dogs

Fear Of Dogs

Fear Of Dogs

Number 14: Fear of Dogs

This is another of the major common phobias which affects many of us on a daily basis. Most people love dogs but some of us are very wary of them even if they are mans best friend.

This phobia probably comes about in childhood as most phobias do. Maybe a neighbors dog jumped on top of you, maybe you were bitten or it could be just the case that there was a big nasty looking dog in the neighborhood who used to scare you.

There are many reasons and scenarios as to why someone would be scared of dogs in their adult life but what many don’t know is that you can easily cure this phobia in only a couple of weeks.

Many will do nothing about their fear of dogs because they live in a city apartment block and so they’ll never really come in contact with one but as we all know this isn’t true at all.

Its true that most dogs on the street today are on a leash by law but some owners will leave their pets loose in the park and this can cause panic in anyone who fears dogs.

So, instead of avoiding the park for fear of coming into contact with a dog, you should think about curing this phobia once and for all with a Fear of dogs therapy like self hypnosis.

Did you know that Cynophobia treatment can be applied by yourself via self help hypnotherapy. All you need to do is record your own subliminal messages & listen.

Fear of Driving

Fear of Driving

Fear of Driving

Number 15: Fear of Driving

The fear of driving phobia affects millions of people worldwide and is one of those common phobias which can have a major impact on your life.

There are many reasons why someone would have a fear of driving; some think a mild form of agoraphobia is to blame while others put it down to a bad experience with cars in childhood.

They say that most phobias are learnt at around the age of 7, so if you have this fear then it could be from around that age.

Maybe you were in the family car when it was involved in an accident or you witnessed an accident on the road.

The reason varies from person to person and its more pronounced in some more than others.

Some people are so badly affected by this phobia that they will never even learn to drive while others will only drive around the block and will avoid the motorway like the plague.

The truth is that anyone can easily cure their fear of driving by using simple self hypnosis which they can do from the comfort of their own homes.

Many who use a fear of driving subliminal mp3 report a significant improvement to their driving within only a few weeks.

You can write your own fear of driving affirmations & turn them into subliminal messages for maximum effect.

Fear of Success

Fear of Success

Fear of Success

Number 16: Fear of Success

The fear of success can be a strange and even seen as one of those weird phobias which doesn’t make sense to many but it still makes our top phobias list as it affects many. I mean how could someone have a fear of being successful, it doesn’t make sense does it?

We all want success so why do some people fear it? Maybe its all the other things which come with being successful, like having lots of friends in high places, the pretension which most successful people have to engage in at some stage.

Maybe we shy away from success because there are so many responsibilities which go with it.

Some people fear success so much that they automatically become self destructive when they are anywhere close to where they are aiming for in life.

A good example is the fact that almost 80% of all lottery winners in the states are broke within 5 years. Unbelievable as it sounds, its true.

Most of these people cant deal with the change, they are catapulted out of their comfort zone and will instinctively try to get back to where they were before their big win.

The same applies to successful people, some felt comfortable right where they were before they started becoming successful, there were no real expectations and they felt right at home.

So, if you’re planning on success it may be a good idea to change your mindset first with a good self help book & then hypnotherapy self hypnosis and you’ll make the path to success far easier.

Fear of Being Alone

Fear of Being Alone

Fear of Being Alone

Number 17: Fear of Being Alone

Autophobia, or Monophobia is the fear of being alone or lonely. We all want to be loved and we all want that special person to be part of our lives & this is why the fear of being alone makes our common phobias list.

Some people will do anything to be with another person while others can wait till the right person comes along.

But the one thing we all have is that fear of being alone, hardly anyone wants to be alone.

Even those die hard bachelors will in the end want to settle down with that special person, its usually only a matter of time before they do.

So, can the fear of being alone really affect our lives? Well, the answer to this is a simple “Yes”.

If you have this most common fear, then you’re going to come across as being desperate and this will have a snowball effect on your relationships.

Anyone who suffers from this phobia needs to realize that in order to change their lives they need to stop worrying about being alone and just live their lives to the max.

However, this is easier said than done for some of the people who are affected by this phobia.

People who worry excessively about being alone should tackle this phobia head on, see someone about it, or use hypnotherapy to rid yourself of it once and for all.

Fear of Needles

Fear of Needles

Fear of Needles

Number 18: Fear of Needles

Who doesn’t have some sort of fear of needles? Its another one of those common phobias which affects most of us.

The vast majority of us have a fear of needles but we can deal with it when it comes to our own health i.e. If we need an injection, we are just going to grin and bear it.

However, there are some people who can stand the thought of a needle penetrating their skin that they have a panic attack.

This phobia can affect many people throughout their lives and is one of those fears which they will have to deal with sooner or later.

Most of us can avoid needles in our youth but at some stage as we age we’re going to have to endure the needle.

Whether its at the dentist or doctors surgery, we will have to face the needle sooner or later.

This is why its so important to do something about this phobia sooner rather than later. A fear of needles phobia can be cured relatively easily with the help of positive affirmations.

These affirmations bypass the negative analytical part of the brain and are implanted into our subconscious where they slowly and deliberately change our behavior towards needles.

Fear of Aging

Fear of Aging

Fear of Aging

Number 19: Fear of Aging

Number nineteen on our list is one which we all have to face no matter what we do in life & this is why we've added it to our common phobias list.

Some can deal with aging more than others and some have a real problem with it.

This phobia affects women more than men as a woman’s looks are important to them whereas men can get by without having to look good all the time.

Billions of dollars are spent every year on all sorts of magical potions and creams which promise the fountain of youth but alas many of these are just a pie in the sky.

The fact is that we all age and you are going to have to deal with this fact or wait around for science to come up with something before we die.

So the best way is to age gracefully, look after yourself, change your diet, don’t drink so much and don't ever smoke.

By following these guidelines, you can improve the way you look in only a matter of months.

If you really worry about aging and how it's affecting you, then you should think about listening to some self help Aging hypnosis which will change the way you look at aging forever.

Fear of Everything

Fear of Everything

Fear of Everything

Number 20: Fear of Everything

The fear of everything comes in at number 20 on our common phobias list. Its also know by the names Omniphobia or Pantophobia.

It is a phobia where the sufferer panics when they have to engage in some new type of behavior.

They are stuck in their old ways and environment and they don’t want to change so eventually they begin to fear everything which will take them out of their current surroundings.

This can have a real devastating effect on one’s life as it significantly curtails a lifestyle.

People who are afflicted by this phobia are not too common so you may not know anyone who has it. However some people may have milder versions of it which will show up in their daily lives, these people don’t want to change, they wont try new things, go to new restaurants etc.

Ridding yourself of this fear of everything can be quite a daunting task but there is hope. For starters the sufferer should try listening to positive affirmations for a few weeks and see if this changes anything.

Sometimes this is all it takes, so if you feel your life needs changing then why not try it out.

I believe that self help hypnotherapy can help with phobias, in the case of sever phobias it may take longer. If you have a fear of driving or Agoraphobia symptoms then id suggest you listen to a fear of driving subliminal and an Agoraphobia subliminal & see how it goes. although the hub maybe be very well written, those of us with very severe cases might find it a bit dismissive of the actually , pain, anxiety, depression , and hopelessness associated with these phobias. Due to a car accident where i was rear ended by a drunk driver. i now suffer from many of these phobias such as : fear of cars, driving, riding in cars, distrust of other drivers etc. i' ve also developed a case of agoraphobia and haven;t left my house for two years unless my wife was with me. I now have a fear and distrust of other people and even have difficulty standing in a grocery line i get extremely angry if i feel someone is too close behind me. i have other issues but point point is i have been battling these conditions for twoi years and for you to dismiss them as being able to be cured in a couple of weeks is very hurtfull to those of us who have been battling these feeliungs for a long time. So my comment is just to be carefull to not be so dismissive of how powerfull this phobias and anxieties really are.

Great Hub! I learned something new in this hub and I am going to link it to my The Truth of Mental Illnesses and Demons hub.

Very good beccas90, I got a good laugh out of that. I know quite a few of these people too, I'll see if I can find something about know-alls and add to the hub. :)

beccas90 from New York on May 06, 2010:

You got all the bases covered well in this hub but you missed one... fear of being wrong! I seem to be surrounded by relatives that have this fear and therefore act like they know everything.

DustinsMom from USA on May 01, 2010:

Very good job. You described each fear in detail. Good hub!

A good read, thanks!

great hub! and i can say that you've sum it all up, putting up those pointers that are very important. More power! :D

charanjeet kaur from Delhi on April 15, 2010:

Well done from me as well, this hub is one of the longest hubs I read in a long time. I think all the important pointers have been covered by many experienced hubbers here. MOW is so right in this case, the pictures the description is so apt just break it into two hubs. just my two cents, regardless excellent information. Rated it up.

Great hub - really interesting and useful

Tony McGregor from South Africa on April 15, 2010:

I think this is an excellent Hub with a great deal of information. I agree with Maita that adding some sources would be a help, as you've obviously done a lot of desk research on this. Just to let us know where your info comes from. Also a vid or two might be good as myownworld has suggested.

I assume you have taken her advice on the paragraphs already as it seems pretty well borken up already.

Great stuff - keep it coming!

Love and peace

myownworld from uk on April 15, 2010:

Very nicely done. Since you asked for advice, I would suggest splitting it into two parts/hubs. Don't delete this one; just edit by taking half the points to the other new one and linking them together! Also, you can break the text into more paragraphs for easier reading. Lastly, add a tube video to perfect it. Otherwise, it's very through and well presented. :)

prettydarkhorse from US on April 15, 2010:

very well informed hub, thumbs up, did you have outside soursces for these, then if yes then just say according to ____, for example, National Association of Psychologists etc...other than that this is excellent, Maita
