Whether you add it to a drink or sprinkle it on your food, there are many health benefits of cinnamon. Studies have shown it can help lower cholesterol, regulate blood sugar levels, stop yeast infections, and much more. Some have even claimed smelling cinnamon can boost your memory.
However, as great as cinnamon is, it can be toxic if taken in large doses. And if used to delay menstruation for too long, it can be extremely painful and cause heavy bleeding when it returns.
Cinnamon Birth Control?
Due to its ability to restrain the menstrual cycle, some women have used cinnamon after child birth as a natural form of birth control.

"A piece of cinnamon taken every night for a month after child birth delays menstruation for more than 15 to 20 months thus preventing early conception. It indirectly helps the secretion of breast milk. Prolonged breast feeding checks the restarting of menstruation after child birth, according to studies."
Cinnamon isn't recommended as a replacement for the usual birth control options, such as birth control pills and condoms, but when used as a temporary solution after child birth, it does work. Just don't use it for too long and always consult with your doctor first.
Other Cinnamon Side Effects
In addition to heavy bleeding and extreme cramping when your period returns after using cinnamon for an extended time (from personal experience, taking a cinnamon supplement everyday for two months is too long), other cinnamon side effects include:

What is Cassia Cinnamon?
Most side effects of cinnamon are the result of Cassia, which is from the same family as cinnamon, but isn't true Ceylon cinnamon.
"You may be surprised to learn that most commercial ground cinnamon is actually cassia or a combination of cinnamon and cassia," explains About.com Guide, Peggy Trowbridge Filippone. "This practice is permitted with no restriction by most countries, including the United States."
Cassia, also known as Cinnamomum aromaticum or Chinese cinnamon, contains a toxic substance called coumarin. Coumarin is harmless in small doses, but may cause liver damage if consumed regularly in larger quantities.
Cassia is often sold as cinnamon in the United States.
Cinnamon and Your Period
Overall, if you are wanting to add a little cinnamon to a drink or indulge in a big, gooey cinnamon roll, there is nothing wrong with that. But if you are wanting to use it to delay your period or as a form of birth control, do so with caution and lots of research.
