What Causes Bleeding Through the Skin and How Can I Stop It?
Some people may be more prone to bleeding than others. Although not common, it is possible to bleed through your skin or bleed through the skin pores, even where there is no cut.
I know someone who bleeds through their skin pores sometimes. Ibuprofen and aspirin make the bleeding happen more often. They take Vitamin K-1 which lessens it. They've had many medical tests, but the doctors haven't been able to find a reason, so it remains a mystery. The good news is that it's not very much blood, so it's more of an annoyance than anything else.
Does the internet have a good answer for what causes bleeding through the skin? Not that I could find. The main suggestions were side effect of a medication, or a rare disease called a Porphyria. However, if you have Porphyria it looks like you would likely be having lots of other symptoms.
If you have any info, please comment in the guestbook at the bottom of this page.
Medications and Certain Foods Might Cause Bleeding
Check Warning Labels and Side Effects on All Medicines
If you look on a bottle of aspirin, it will usually caution you about taking it if you have a bleeding disorder. This is because aspirin makes your blood thinner and is not the only drug that does this.
Ibuprofen and garlic are just two other medications or supplements that possibly have this blood thinning effect.
There is a medication called Warfarin (Coumadin) which is prescribed as a blood thinner. For people who take Warfarin, it is very important to avoid taking other medications that also cause blood thinning, because having your blood too thin is a very dangerous thing. Well, there are over 600 medications that interact with Warfarin. Many of these medications would be ones to avoid if you already have a bleeding disorder.
Cranberry Juice and Selenium
June 25, 2011 Update:
I am still researching this topic. I found that WedMD has a great vitamin and supplement directory. I've been looking up supplements and reading the side effects and interactions.
I found out that:
- Cranberries contain salicylic acid, which is similar to aspirin. Cranberries can increase the risk of bleeding, especially in people taking Warfarin.
- Selenium can increase the risk of bleeding. Selenium is a mineral commonly found in multivitamins and prostate support supplements. Selenium should not be taken before surgery.
Vitamin K-1 Might Help Stop Bleeding
You Can Buy Low Dose Vitamin K-1 Online
Vitamin K is available as a supplement and is also found in many foods. Find a list of these foods, here. You can take a supplement once a day, or eat 1/2 cup of Brussels sprouts every day. That's how low dose these pills are, or how potent Brussels sprouts are, depending on your point of view.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that taking one of these pills every day might help with nose bleeds, bleeding gums, and other bleeding disorders. It seems that you have to take it on a regular basis and that it might take about six hours for it to start working. Your doctor can check to see if you are low in Vitamin K or have any problems with clotting. Even if you don't have a low level of Vitamin K, supplementing might help, but as with any supplement, you should check with your doctor first.
There is also a prescription Vitamin K supplement called Mephyton, which is much higher dose.
Remember that seeing a medical doctor is very important. Having blood that is too thick or too thin are both serious conditions. You don't want to get a blood clot or have a stroke!
The paragraph to the right was found using a Google Books search. You can see the rest of the page here. It is from the book A Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine by Nigel Wiseman & Ye Feng.
Depending on cause, it recommends Rehmannia, or Tangkeui, Gentian, and Aloe Pill.
Occasional Bleeding Through Skin With No Other Symptoms
And Doctors Can't Find Anything Wrong
Is this you?
How long do you keep searching for a reason? Or do you just live with it....
The strange thing is that some people are more susceptible to nosebleeds than other people. Is bleeding through the skin a similar condition? I'd love to hear from you in the below guestbook.
Anyone can comment here. I'd love to hear from you!

Well for years now i will go to do laundry and will have blood spots on my shirts. I will look all over my body will have nothing. (No cuts,scrapes,etc.). It continues to happen and sometimes more than other times. Then about 2 years ago i started to get these horrific looking mottled skin on the outside of hips and on inner thighs and on lower legs. I take very hot baths and some say that is what does that. But why out of the blue it shows up. Also on lower arms and legs i can verily hit something and i bleed or bruise. I am only 55 and rhis started happening around 2-3 years ago. For years have had severe bowel problems with no diagnosis. Will be fine one week then next severe pain, diarrhea and grumbling of stomach. Have thought maybe food allergies but not that because one time can eat something and will be fine then next time awful consequences. Now seem to be foggy and confused sometimes. Been getting bad headaches. Have had major joint pains on and off and fatigue. Always tired. I also have tarlov and other types of cysts all through my body. I have several in my spinal area that hit nerves and have been on heavy pain medication for over 10 years for this due to no cure. I am over all of it not knowing what is going on. See all kinds of different specialist since symptoms all over the board and get no answers. If there anybody out there that can explain any of this it would be great.

No scratch, scar, bruise anywhere in sight where the bleeding was coming from never have neither one of us seen or heard of this before. He has a upcoming Dr. appt. hoping to get some answers.

I have this. I have bled through the skin on my face. I woke up thinking I scratched myself, but there were no scratches. Afterward the skin is dry and sensitive. I do not know what causes it but I would like to get rid of it!

I thought I was going mad or possibly am! I broke my nose 4 days ago and it's took 4 hours to stop bleeding. Today I wake up with weird looking tiny dry blood spots at the top of my nose that looked like black heads but weren't, I got them off this morning, it's now this evening and I have more in the same place. Very confused..

My son got a sunburn on his neck area, not really bad just a burn from baseball. The next morning I put some sunscreen on him in that area and it turned blood red in that area. We were in a hurry so we didn't think much of it and it went away, but when we were going to wash the shirt we noticed blood on the collar, where The burn was. His neck is fine and the burn is gone so is the blood. Crazy! Nothing like this has ever happened to him before.

I also bleed from my pores. I noticed this about 5 years ago. My pores are quite large and my skin is oily. I have shown my GP and Dermatologist, no answers. I do notice that it happens when I'm incredibly stressed. Usually, the blood sits in the pore, other times in drains down (no more than 1/3 of an inch sometimes sanguine, but mostly fire engine red). The bleeding pore can be anywhere on my face-usually between my forehead and top lip line. I usually get just one bleeding pore at a time, there's been less than a handful of times that I've had two pores going at the same time. I would love to know why this happens. I wasn't an any meds initially, so we can rule that out.

My son has been complaining of having a hard time swallowing. He has been to the doctor and had several tests and nothing has been found. Then Sunday in church, he started sweating, became dizzy and blood was coming from his sweat pores. Any ideas? We are certainly worried! He is 33 years old, married with 2 children.

My mother did this. I can remember watching her chin start bleeding for no apparent reason.
She had hemochromatosis and her body would bleed to try to get rid of the extra iron (said a doctor). She ultimately died of liver failure due to the hemochromatosis being so advanced before they could figure out the problem, but near the end is when the doctor told her about the extra iron/blood and decided it was hemochromatosis.

I've just come across this as my 4 year old a couple of days this week has come home from school with little spots of blood all over her t-shirt. We don't know where it's come from as there is absolutely no sign of bleeding on her at all. She does bleed quite easily and has nose bleeds. My 11 year old son also suffers from very bad nosebleeds. Also if I take asprin it causes me to pass blood like a light period yet my mum had very thick blood that clotted too quickly.
I'm concerned as to why my 4 year old is seemingly bleeding from nowhere!
veronicawayne on July 24, 2016:
I am having issues bleeding through my pores on my face only recently (past month or so) but it began on my forehead and has somehow spread to my cheeks.
However it isn't alone, my skin will puff out in that same area when I lightly exfoliate my skin (I used to be able to exfoliate roughly on my skin to remove all dead skin, pressing exfoliation wipes on my skin with no issue) yet now my skin also flakes off consistently as I do so and never stops so perhaps it may be linked to a type of eczema or other dermatitis problem personal to my being which is my only hypothesis as of the moment - I personally have developed eczema in an extremely small but isolated area between my index and middle finger. Nowhere else do I suffer from eczema and only once before in Winter when I was 17 did I get eczema in one isolated area on my leg which cleared away within a month with no other side effects. I am nearing my mid 20's now.
Some of my pores have also become covered in an unusual type of clear or yellow hard shell. This is also extremely recent and I really need to focus as I check my skin with my fingers, gliding over my skin, to find them but perhaps this is due to a bodily secretion that is not blood but lymph or the like a day to two after exfoliating? But I am extremely flabbergasted at the bleeding of my pores problem (where such casings over my pores are not present) so I will try to get a diagnosis from my doctor after my appointment with them.
Also, many types of bacteria and fungus can grow on the skin in abnormal amounts which I have found out online so I wonder if this may be affecting some individuals unknowingly? Or perhaps some type of polluting agent from the environment/skin care products? It's worth peering into I suppose though I personally rarely ever use skin care products unless I remove makeup in which case I only use "Simple" brand products.
The bleeding that occurs isn't in large amounts, it's simply like a reaction to my exfoliation, every pore in the area that suddenly swells (only where I exfoliate) turns red and some tissue will only pick up the tiniest amount of blood from every pore effected of which I am thankful for. But it is still worrying as this extremely suddenly happened one day when trying to exfoliate my face.
I would also like to add here that I rarely wear makeup, back when I wore a lot of makeup I never had this issue.
I have no idea what I have and no one else with bleeding pores seems to have gotten a diagnosis either. Good luck to anyone else out there with this symptom!
Natalee on July 01, 2016:
I bleed from my pores too. No idea why. Occasionally it will form droplets, other times they will be right below the first layer of skin but dont form droplets. No idea either.

I have this 'condition', or whatever it's called! For me, it is purely down to stress. I walked away from a stressful job, recovery took a few months during which time the bleeding started. It stopped of its own accord. I've now split from my partner of over two years which has really given me cause for concern to put it mildly. Hey presto! The bleeding has started again.
From what I can see, it is limited to my face. Tiny little specs of blood from the pores. Even comes through a face with primer and foundation on.

on Thanksgiving night I woke to use the restroom at 2 am. I was sleepy and used the toilet without turning on the light but when I returned to bed I was shocked to see the sheets covered with blood spots and dried blood on my forearms and the tops of my feet. This so happens to be close to the areas where I suffer great pain from RSD . I have a small dog that sleeps on my bed and I examined him for cuts or scrapes to find none on him
I went back to the bathroom and washed my arms and feet. As I was drying them off I noticed when drying more blood was oozing from my poors. It continued in those locations for about another 30 mins. Since that night it's done it again two additional times in the same locations on my body.
There are no cuts or abrasions and no injury I know of. I have had RSD for 30 years and never has this been involved. I have no answers to explain the condition and never know when it's going to happen. There is no physical sensation or pain involved. I am on a spring therapy and blood thinners for a very serious heart condition. None of the Doctors I'm involved with have any answers. If anyone knows anything about this please e mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you.

This morning in my epilepsy clinic a 12 yr boy was brought with symptoms suggestive of complex partial seizures (sudden transient loss of awareness, unusual behavior, involuntary movements while he starts throwing his limbs fell down and unconscious, at times frothing mixed with blood, fresh bleeding that last for a few minutes to hours). He continue moving while remains apparently unconscious. the episodic attacks started 10 months ago.
The other problem he came with was spontaneous sudden bleeding through his intact skin anywhere of the body- scalp, ear, eyes, skin over the body back, arm, axilla, palm sole-- that may last for hours. at times bleeding from his eyes amounting about 60ml or more. this started first as nose bleeding at 2 yr age, last it happened 3 days ago. one night parents remained awake as the boy was bleeding through his umbilicus that happened like sudden fire' stopped then again after an hour or so whole night. It shocked me when father showed me the pictures! All possible tests of blood revealed no abnormality. I have advised for an EEG which i am reviewing now, the brain MRI is normal. I will be working to explore more about the unique problem, and would be interested to contact any physician who have experience dealing with such patients.

It was strange to wake up with a little stinging, looked at my arm and it looked like a chocolate morsel (in the dark anyway, it was red). I thought OMG I've got skin cancer popping up in the middle of the night. But it's localized and it was bleeding a little upon first noticing. Now it's like a lighty scabbed cut. So it's possible the cat had walked on me or I hit my arm on something and didn't notice. I'm keeping watch on it. I hope it's not a foreshadowing on things to come. But I did fear a melanoma, we'll see.

I awoke one morning and went into the bathroom to collect my clothes (where I had left them the previous night)
When I picked up my bra I noticed there was a circular area of blood on the inside, this blood had soaked right through to the outside; it was still damp, and was about the size of a fifty pence coin;a significant amount was present. I was shocked and mystified, as there was no other blood spots anywhere. The nightshirt I was wearing was unmarked so i took it off and looked at my skin; there underneath my breast was a circular ring of pale red; on looking closely there were tiny pinprick spots where the blood had oozed through the skin; yet the skin was unbroken. I wiped it with a damp cloth and the skin was completely normal; no cuts,no grazes, no spots, no lumps,no rash, NOTHING. This must have occurred the previous day or evening but I had not felt anything...no itching, or tingling or pain I had gone to bed late and had not paid attention to my clothes the previous night, but that is when this very strange thing must have happened. I tasted it and it was blood, but why this occurred I am at a loss to explain. there was no bleeding or blood anywhere else and it was not through the nipple but on clean unblemished skin on the lower area of breast. I went to the doctor who examined me and could offer no reason for this ;she was mystified, baffled and surprised and said if it happened again I must immediately get to see her, she did believe me and her advice was to ignore it unless it happened again.

Usually i have no clue wen the blood is coming out and i only see the marks either on the legs or on the jeans i'm wearin. The blood rubs off easily and obviously there's no cut underneath. Is there a possible explanation to it? Is it dangerous?
anonymous on November 05, 2012:
I have asked 3 doctors and one nurse practitioner about this and they all just looked at me, and one said I must have had a cut..I know there was no cut. It hasn't happened to me again so far but it was very real, and all I want is for one doctor to take the interest to
research it a bit. From my own finding I see there is an illness called
porphyria and it has different symptoms, some of which I do have..
stomach problems, light sensitive, I forget the others but not one
doctor said anything about it. They all just said they never heard of
spontaneous bleeding through the pores.
I wouldn't think that nose bleeds would be the same thing because the blood is coming out of a cavity...like rectal bleeding would be.
This was totally different...from a foot with no cuts or openings any-
where for the blood to come from.

@anonymous: The same thing that happened to Paul in April happened to me today. I was eating lunch with a friend and I started to bleed from my chin. I have clear skin, had not cut myself shaving that morning, actually there was zero irritation of any sort. The blood was coming from a single pore. It bled for a full hour when I had several napkins covered in little red spots. Pressure wouldn't help either. Now my chin is sore prom pressing on it so hard, but not the slightest mark of where the bleeding was coming from. Paul said it best. Bizarre.

I looked this up because I have done this only once on Sept.26, 2012.
I came in my door from being out to get a new apartment. I took off my
shoes at the door and walked a few feet to the table and put my purse
there and started changing out the keys on my key ring. When I looked
there was blood on the floor....quite a bit..and then I noticed that my left
foot was bleeding all on the bottom ball of my foot. Then I saw it was also
on the top second toe all the way down to the foot joint and between my
big toe and second toe. I thought to myself that I must have cut my foot.
I got some wet paper towels and washed off my foot, and cleaned the floor.
Then washed my foot again and looked and rubbed trying to find a cut...
there was no cut, and it didn't hurt anywhere. It did frighten me though
and I must say it is the strangest thing that has ever happened to me.
There was no blood in my shoe..
I am bipolar and on medication for it and doing okay, but was stressed
because of moving..just one time I bleed so far..I also had a DVT in the
left upper leg about a year ago and I know the circulation is still not real
good there..have a Dr appt Oct 9.

I have been experiencing something similar to Jay in Ottawa, except that my symptoms occur whether I am indoors or out. Mostly I am indoors. I have low blood pressure and very low pulse.
Several of the pores on the point of my nose will spontaneously start to bleed. It has become worse recently as adjacent pores bleed and form a largish area which looks unsightly.
A clue that came from reading these comments was the use of garlic, which I have recently started taking after some pressure from my wife. Looks like I will have to stop the garlic and see if the bleeding does in fact stop.
Good interesting lens.

I have learned that I am taking a drug that causes photo sensitivity. It may be part of my problem, but my physician doesn't want to change it. He's right that I shuld be using a sunscreen anyway. Recently I had a bleeding episode after spending a day driving in the bright sun. I had not used sun screen. Sun screen is always the answer to my problem. Recently I have been using the Neutragena spray product. I spray it on my hand and then spread it all over my head. No white greasy feeling. It's a clear liquid and dries in a moment. I highly recommend this product.

@anonymous: No, my blood pressure is fine. My cheeks also get red but have never bled. I am now using a 70 SPF sun screen made by Neutrogena (UltraSheer dry-touch formula) and have only a slight redness around those pores on my nose and my cheeks don't get red. I'm convinced that it is a sun sensitivity problem. BTW, a friend who has facial skin cancer said that his dermatologist recommends this same sun screen to him. It also comes in a spray and the dermatologist says that works as well as the cream. Try it!

@anonymous: I don't know if blood pressure is causing your bleeding, but it's a possibility... High blood pressure can cause all sorts of problems over the long term. That's why hypertension is called the silent killer. Usually you don't feel the high blood pressure, but it raises your risk for stroke and other problems.

I'm a 66 year old man who gets bleeding pores on the outside of my nose if I am out in the sun. It forms small scabs. Some times the blood is only the yellow plasma. I learned that it is a sun sensitivity and take great pains to smoother my face in sun screen. Three doctors have looked at it, seem baffled and just tell me to use more sun screen. That has worked for a cuple of years. But, it's winter here in Canada and the last two times I was out doing a sports activity the SPF 45 didn't work. The "condition" seems to have worsened. I do not have pale skin or any other skin conditions. What bothers me is that blood vessels have to be breaking open for this blood to flow. What is happening? No one knows. What will it develop into? No on knows.

My father's twin died at age 4 back in 1906. My aunt said that you could not see the skin bleeding but if her mother put cotton batten in his mouth and told him to press his mouth tight, when he oped his mouth and she took the batten out, it would be pink in colour. Also in the creases of his arms and bends of his fingers, if you wiped a white hanky across then you could see the pink colour. We have been told there is a cure for it today.
But I do not know what it condition was called. He just got weaker and weaker and finally passed.

Thank you for this informative lens. I have a rare blood disorder - too many platelets. I was told to stop taking vitamin E because it will cause me to bleed easily. Blessed.

i managed to get rat poison in an open cut while working and all cuts i had wouldn't stop bleding due to this and the doctor advised me to try zinc tablets. This helped and they started healing in by the end of the next week. Good lens btw

You did a fabulous job of covering medications that could further thin the blood, I even heard that leafy greens (in salads) have blood thinning effects too. Many people are on Warfarin, which is an extremely potent blood thinner. When I studied nursing, I was exposed to a condition called ITP (Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura). It may be one of the culprits in this condition The immune system malfunctions (in those with ITP) and begins attacking platelets as if they were foreign substances. Symptoms include: easy or excessive bruising (purpura), superficial bleeding into your skin that appears as a rash of pinpoint-sized reddish-purple spots (petechiae), bleeding from your gums or nose (without injury), blood in urine or stools and profuse bleeding during surgery. Also women with unusually heavy menses.
Another thing that received a great deal of attention (some 10 - 15 years ago) was the fascination with Stigmata (being raised Roman Catholic, I heard of this 'bleeding from the hands' in holy leaders - a sign of the suffering of Jesus on the cross).
Really great lens, many people don't even realize that taking aspirin (when on Coumadin) could be very dangerous.
Hope your week is great,

@anonymous: I'm sure some of the searches are about Jesus, but from seeing the search terms I'm now getting on this page, and also from seeing the number of people who are clicking on my link to the list of medications that can cause bleeding problems, it seems that a lot of people are actually researching this medical symptom. Why I created this lens is because I was researching this symptom, and there isn't much on the internet that I found of value. Yet it is an issue that some people have, probably to varying degrees of seriousness, just like some people are more prone to nosebleeds than others.

I was thinking along the same lines a Mr. Jeremy. Very fascinating subject for a lens!

In the Bible, before Jesus was betrayed, "he sweat, as it were drops of blood." (see Luke 22:44) Maybe some of the google searches you mentioned were by people looking for a medical explanation for that.
