Like Spicy Food ? ..... Eat Smaller Portions .....
Benefits Of Minimal Diet - Gives Rest To Your Digestive System .....
Since ancient times when medical sciences came into existence, diet assumed great importance. In Ayurveda, proper diet has been recommended based on wata, pitta and cough.
Hippocrates, the father of medicine, was the first man to establish that unbalanced diet and improper food are the causes of diseases. Dr. Samuel Hannemann, the father of Homeopathy, discussed effects of diet on a healthy body as well as on patients.
In our modern times, man has developed a fascination for spicy food, which has led people to consume fast foods prepared in unhealthy way, and spicy dishes are eaten to please the taste - buds, quite unmindful of the stomach and its results.
Such unhealthy food, leaves a latent harmful effect on the body, mind and soul. Unhealthy food badly affects the health and mentality of the consumer and reduces the internal strength which is essential for enduring mental stress.
Fasting And Minimal Diet
Fasting and Minimal Diet gives rest to the Digestive System, keeps body functions up to date, and helps build mental control on oneself.
A continuous working factory allows weekly holiday to its workers. In Western Countries, five day week is observed. Even though it may appear to be a loss of two working days and consequent reduction of production, but the rest for two days nurtures confidence and the workers come to the workplace fully energized and in a better frame of mind and body. This refreshing mood helps in increased production.
This is equally applicable to our digestive system. Stomach, gall bladder, small and large intestines, rectum and the anus constitute our digestive system. These body parts have the power of expansion and contraction and helps to move the food forwards. However, food taken in large quantities and gulped in forcefully, create dumping in the system. This drastically lowers the digestion efficiency. The quantity of digestive juices and acids are not enough to digest these voluminous food intakes and indigestion results. This leads to stomach colics and flatulence and loose motions and vomiting. Also, in some cases acidity and constipation may result.
The stomach remains loaded with undigested food which begins to rot and this definitely is detrimental to the body. This is an invitation to many disorders. Ayurveda also says that minimal diet is easily digested and this produces nutrition to the body and keeps it healthy.
Aged Person's Diet
Aged persons should take minimal diet, keeping in view the condition of their digestive system. It is a myth that small quantity of diet reduces physical strength. A study of dietary habits of persons 70 years of age and above, revealed that minimal diet has been able to maintain good digestion and good health. It is now a fact that fasting or minimal diet increases digestion and results in good nutrition and health.
In aged persons due to limited production of digestive juices and a little dehydration, constipation is a general complaint. The elderly persons should drink a lot of water and may need to take a digestive pill and a mild laxative from time to time and if required. A cleansed colon and a proper elimination of the waste results in a better healthy feeling and freedom from indigestion and lethargy.
Regular Exercise .....
Regular daily exercise boosts up the digestive system. In the elderly age group regular walking is recommended and is a must for a healthy mind and body. It is like a tonic and gives a feeling of well-being and vigour.
Children should not develop the habit of eating unhealthy fast food, and their digestive system should not be loaded with junk. Fasting also helps maintain a healthy body, which is dedicating ourselves to the Almighty. Fasting maintains healthy body and if it is linked with spirituality one benefits in terms of mentality and spirituality also.
How Should We Eat ?
Now the question arises as to how should we eat ?
One should eat good balanced nutritious food prepared in a hygienic manner so that its nutrients are preserved, and eat only that much as is required by the stomach. One should never overeat or gulp down morsel after morsel of food and so dump the digestive system with voluminous amounts of food. Breakfast should be taken at about 8 AM, lunch between 12 to 2 noon and dinner at about 7 to 8 PM. No eating or chewing in between. Sugar, maida, polished rice, excess salt and white bread should be avoided. Sweet dishes and fried foods should be taken during festivals only. As far as possible foodstuffs should be eaten in their natural form. Seasonal fruits and vegetables, salads, sprouts, pulses, cucumber, buttermilk, figs and dates should be eaten. Water, buttermilk or a glass of milk before going to bed also keeps the health in a good condition and increases resistance of the body. Despite having intelligence, man becomes a fool in case of food. A beast eats only that much as is required by the body. But, humans go on an eating spree, unmindful of the stomach and the illnesses over - eating brings with it.
To Summarise .....
Summary: To Summarise, there are many advantages of eating less. One of it is Longivity. It has been observed since ancient times that people who live longer, more than 90 or even 100 years of age have been observed to have a very slim body frame and have been eating a very modest meal throughout their lives. Also, eating less results in a slim body and its advantages of less fat around the body and vital organs like heart. So, prevention against ischemic heart disease. These people have low bad cholesterol levels and are energetic and can move lightly.
Whatever extra food intake we have above our bodily requirement is stored in our body as fat. This results in weight gain. Even before that this extra food intake puts a load on the digestive system due to dumping of extra food that the body does not need for optimum functioning. This results in indigestion, and obesity and with it come problems like diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.
So, in conclusion, control your taste - buds and eat less so as to take good care of your digestive system and the stomach and thus maintain good health and proper digestion. Also, eating less puts a control on expences on food bills and results in savings. Imagine how much we can save in our lifetime if we practice eating less throughout our lifetimes.
