Beat The Heat This Summer

We're starting to feel the heat here in Michigan. What's the temperature at your place?

And boy that humidity! "Along with the sunshine, there's gotta be a little rain sometimes" =)

Importance of Staying Cool in Hot Temperatures

Did you know that you can actually get sick by getting too hot? If your body does not cool you off well enough, you can even die from exposure to extreme heat. Especially vulnerable are the elderly, the very young, and anyone with mental illness or chronic disease.

Below are the top five ways that I find most beneficial for me to beat the heat.

5 Ways To Stay Cool & Beat The Heat - No. 1 Air Conditioning

Staying in the air conditioning is the best way to beat the heat. If you do not have air conditioning where you live. Go to a public place where there is air conditioning. At least during the hottest hours of the day (roughly noon to 5pm).

No. 2 - Drink Plenty of Liquids - Especially Water

Every organ in your body needs water. If you lack water in your body, it makes it harder for your body to regulate it's temperature, and can lead to dehydration. Some say eight or nine cups of fluids each day might be sufficient, and more when it's very hot.

Water is the best choice. It's been proven that water helps the the body to digest foods. It helps to flush toxins, and can actually give you more energy, and increased focus. It's the best choice to beat the heat in the hot summer months.

No 3 - Take A Shower

Here is one of my personal favorite ways to beat the heat.

If you are at home, and not near a lake or pool, this is a really good way to cool down.

If you're anything like me, I do not sweat (or is that "glisten"?) very easily. I retain the heat too much. I find it best to cool the OUTside of my body, and I feel much better afterward.

Take a shower. You can take a warm/hot shower if you wish, but at the end, turn down the hot water so that your body adjusts to cooler water. Then be sure and soak your head. Run the shower over your head for at least a minute. Gradually make the water as cool as you can and still be comfortable. A great way to beat the heat.

No 4 - Use a Fan with Ice Cubes

If for some reason you cannot be in the air conditioning. Use a fan.

Be sure and have ice cubes in your freezer. Put some ice cubes in a bowl and place it in front of the fan to cool you off.

Keep the fridge stocked with ice cubes.

No 5 - Use a Spray Bottle

Beat the heat with a squirt.

Fill a spray bottle with water and keep it in the fridge. When you feel you are getting too warm, take out the bottle and give yourself a squirt.

I like to take a couple small spray bottles with me when I go golfing, because I tend to retain the heat and get over heated. By spraying my skin and letting the air/wind blow on me helps tremendously.

@nasph lm: Thanks nasph. I'd rather have hot temps with air conditioning, than the cold Michigan winters!
