5 Foods That Fight Cancer - The Science Behind It All

Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells divide uncontrollably, causing tumors to form. It’s the second leading cause of death in the United States, after heart disease. The American Cancer Society estimates that 1 in 2 men and women will develop cancer during their lifetime.

Thanks to organizations like the World Cancer Research Fund International (WCRF), a global network of scientists researching how nutrition affects our health we can now back this information with science. They publish scientific papers on the relationship between food and cancer risk. Their findings show that eating lots of fruit and vegetables reduces your chances of developing certain types of cancers. Eating too much red meat increases your risk of bowel cancer. And drinking alcohol increases your risk of breast cancer.

There are several foods that have been shown to reduce the risk of developing certain cancers. These foods contain compounds called antioxidants, which protect our bodies against free radicals. Free radicals are molecules with unpaired electrons that damage DNA and cell membranes. Antioxidants neutralize these free radicals by donating electrons to them.

Discover what foods have been proven to help prevent or treat cancer.

Here's the list of foods:

1. Blueberries

Blueberries contain antioxidants which may help prevent cancer. The antioxidant anthocyanins in blueberries may protect against DNA damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that cause cell damage. They are produced when cells use oxygen to break down food. Antioxidants neutralize these free radicals before they do any harm.

2. Broccoli

Scientists have been studying how broccoli works on cancer cells for decades. They have now discovered that broccoli contains high levels of antioxidants which help protect against free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage cells and cause disease. Antioxidants neutralise these harmful chemicals and prevent them causing harm.

3. Olive oil

Olive oil contains antioxidants which may help prevent cancer. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, found that people who ate extra virgin olive oil had lower levels of DNA damage than those who did not eat any. The study showed that the antioxidant properties of the oil could protect against cancer.

The Mediterranean diet, rich in fruit, vegetables, beans, nuts, fish, whole grains, and olive oil, has been linked to lower rates of heart disease and some cancers.

4. Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice that comes from the root of a plant called Curcuma longa. It contains curcumin, which is believed to help prevent cancer cells from growing and spreading. In fact, studies suggest that curcumin may even kill cancer cells without harming healthy ones.

5. Beans

Beans can fight cancer Scientists have found that eating beans may help prevent some cancers. The study showed that people who ate legumes every day had lower rates of stomach cancer than those who didn't eat them regularly. Researchers believe that the fibre in beans helps keep the digestive system healthy. It's thought that the phytochemicals in beans could also protect against certain types of breast and prostate cancer.
