Why Should You Drink Pomegranate Peel Tea Every Day?

This article is a write up of my research on pomegranate peel powder and its tea and the health benefits associated with drinking its tea.

What is the first thing that you do when you come across this vibrant fruit? Eat its arils and discard the peels. Next time when you get to eat this fruit think twice before throwing the peels in the trash cause these peels are packed with nutrients and bioactive compounds that is beneficial for one's overall wellbeing. Enough has been said and spoken about the green tea, black tea, white tea and other herbal teas. Now it is the pomegranate peel tea that requires the attention. As a food science student this was my topic of research for my Mphil studies five years ago. When it comes to pomegranate we consume its arils but throw away the peels. Rinds and rinds of pomegranate peels are thrown in the trash and we seldom make an attempt to utilize the nutrients of this fruit of heaven. While the peels of fruits like orange, lemon and banana are being put to use and consumed, why not pomegranate rinds? What could be the reason? The answer is pomegranate peels are known for its astringent flavor and alters the taste of the food when used along with other products and make it undesirable. So what can be done? The peels have to be utilized in a product where its bitterness and astringency are acceptable. That was one of the reasons why I decided to utilize pomegranate peels in the form of herbal tea.

"Do you know that pomegranate is listed as a medicinal herb in Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India?"

Preparation of pomegranate peel powder and tea.

I had cut the pomegranate peels into fine pieces and freeze dried it for my research. I chose freeze drying to preserve the bioactive compounds in the pomegranate peel powder. At home pomegranate peels can be cut into fairly smaller pieces and shade dried. If dried under direct sunlight there are high chances that the Vitamin C, flavonoids, polyphenols, tannins and other bioactive compounds to get destroyed as they are volatile in nature.

After shade drying they can be ground in a mixer and reduced to fine powder which can be stored in an air tight container.

The tea can be prepared like any other herbal teas.

  • Take 125 ml of water and boil it till it reaches the lukewarm temperature. Do not boil the water till its boil point as it may destroy the bioactive components present in the pomegranate peel powder.
  • Switch off the stove and add one teaspoon of pomegranate peel powder and allow it to simmer
  • Now filter the contents into a cup. Lemon juice and honey can be added to enhance the taste and for added benefits.

Home Remedies with Pomegranate Peel Powder

  • Pomegranate peels for bad breath: The peels of pomegranate fruit are often used in toothpowders and toothpastes and when taken in a powdered form with water it helps fight bad breath.
  • For cough and sore throat: A mixture of pomegranate peel powder and lukewarm water when gargled, provides relief from cough and sore throat.
  • For skin: The ellagic acid and punicagalin present in pomegranate peel helps retain moisture in the skin, prevents cracking of skin and delays ageing. A mixture of pomegranate peel powder, milkcream and turmeric helps rejuvenate skin. Pomegranate peel powder also acts as a good sun block agent and prevents skin damage due to UV rays and helps treating skin cancers.
  • For hair: Pomegranate peel powder when mixed with olive oil and applied on the hair roots prevents hair loss and dandruff.

It is necessary to take care of one's health before it gets too late cause health is wealth. A cup of pomegranate peel tea and utilizing the pomegranate peel powder in other forms every day helps one to keep diseases at bay.

Thanks a lot for your comments Abitha. To remove any pesticide residue you can soak the peels in salted lukewarm water for some time and shade dry it. Freeze drying is the most effective method, but cannot be carried out at home. It is an industrial method. I carried out in my college's advanced food lab.. shade drying is the second effective method to freeze drying as it also preserves the bio acttive components in the peels to a certain extent and can also be carried out at home.

I have a few pomegranates lying in my fridge. I love the fruit and am glad to know I can consume the peels as tea. I do have a query, though. How do I remove any pesticide residue that might be present on the rind - this is my usual deterrent when I want to use fruit peels. Most of them are not organic. Also, what does the process of freeze-drying involve? Is it possible to do that at home?
