Lettuce is a leafy green vegetable, which make our salads and foods crunchy and healthy. But why do we eat lettuce so much? What make this tasteless plant so special? It is the most popular vegetable all around the world, because of its numerous health benefits, related to

  • Bone structure
  • Improving sleep
  • Nerve function

It is preventative of number of diseases that includes

  • Heath disease
  • Diabetes
  • and even cancer

Why should you eat lettuce everyday?

There are multiple types of lettuces available out there in the market, but they all share a common scientific name "Lactuca sativa".

The health benefits of lettuce come mainly from its super vitamin contents. They are so powerful that doctors use them to treat different diseases, including cancer. Here are some reasons why should you eat lettuce everyday!

It keeps your bones strong

Leafy green vegetables are often great source of Vitamin K, which is a great component in keeping your bones strong. Vitamin K is essential in bone building as well as maintaining good condition of the bones.

As a matter of fact latest studies have shown that Vitamin K improves bones density, and prevent osteoporosis, even better than calcium can do. That's the main reason, that you have to eat vegetables to keep your bones strong. In addition to maintaining a healthy skeletal structure, vitamin K plays a vital role in

  • blood clotting
  • treating bruises
  • aiding in bone calcification
  • and help prevent certain diseases

A great source of antioxidants

Lettuce is packed with antioxidants as one cup of lettuce provides you

  • 82% of vitamin A
  • 19% of vitamin C

Both of these vitamins are partly related to genes regulation and cell differentiation. They are fabulous for preventing free radical damage, and that's how salads help you keep young.
Both of these vitamins aid and help you in

  • keeping you young and healthy
  • keep your skin and eyesight healthy
  • help maintaining strong bones
  • boost immunity
  • help in reducing inflammation
  • reduce oxidative stress

Keep your eye sight healthy

Eye sight is a problem with every other person. Most people are losing their ability to see without even knowing it. A rich supply of vitamin A, vitamin C, and carotenoids including zeaxanthin and others found in lettuce, help protect you from eye conditions.

If someone suffering from deficiencies of these antioxidants, can lead to a thickening of cornea, cause glaucoma, cataracts and molecular degeneration and even blindness if one is not careful. The best natural remedy to avoid these condition is to eat plenty of green vegetables, including lettuce.

It Boosts immunity

Vitamin A and vitamin C are two lettuce's nutritional stars, and both of them are well known powerful immunity boosters.

Vitamin A is involved in several immune system functions, and vitamin A found in lettuce helps,

  • fight infections
  • it protects skin and digestive system
  • it helps absorb nutrients from food and
  • defend us from harmful bacteria overgrowth.

Vitamin C on the other hand benefits,

  • our immune system by reducing inflammation
  • it aids in digestive health and it help nutrients be absorbed by body
  • It also plays an important role in body's ability to fight off common cold, flue and viruses.

So you need Vitamin C and vitamin A, because without them human body is unable to keep your immune system working properly, and you all get that by adding some lettuce in your salads.

It helps fight cancer

No one actually worries about cancer but as a matter of fact it is the second most common cause of death all around the world. Some recent studies claim that chlorophyll in lettuce and other green leafy vegetables can actually reduce the risk of cancer.

Apparently its antioxidants, its vitamin A, vitamin C helps our body to fight cancer. So, be thoughtful, as eating lettuce daily can give you a lot of health benefits, so must include it in your daily diet.

Get an improved sleep

Sleep deprivation can cause a number of health conditions like diabetes, heart disease, obesity and even depression.
The white fluid we can see when we cut lettuce is called lactucarium, a substance which has relaxing and sleep inducing properties. So, adding some lettuce leaves in your dinner can really help you to get some good sleep.

If somebody is dealing with insomnia, lettuce tea is also very beneficial for treating it. Lettuce tea has been used for thousands of years, as a remedy for stress and insomnia. It is very popular in European and Chinese culture, because of its sedative effects on body, as it helps in reducing stress and anxiety and get a good sleep.

To make lettuce tea, you will need 2 cups of water and about 4 to 5 large leaves of lettuce. To begin with, take 2 cups of water in a pan. Bring it to boil, and then add 4 to 5 lettuce leaves to the pan and allow it to simmer for 20 minutes or till the water gets half in proportion.
Try this lettuce tea before going to bed and you will be amazed by its results.

Lettuce is a great food

Apart from these, lettuce has many more health benefits. With its amazing healing benefits and 20% protein by calories, it can be called a super food.

It contains Omega 3 fatty acids and vitamins that help prevent skin infections and also aid in the slowing down the degeneration of skin cells, so helps keep you young.

It is considered a great food for weight loss as it is rich in fiber and low in calories and fats. Two cups of lettuce has only 11 to 15 calories. A big component of lettuce is water, and vitamins, and it is also rich in fiber, which helps feel your stomach full for longer, making it a perfect food for weight loss.

Iceberg lettuce is a good source of folate, and intake of folate rich food by pregnant women help prevent birth defects. It protects us from serious brain as well as heart conditions and type 2 diabetes.

Bottom line

So, there are enough reasons to add this crunchy leafy vegetable in our daily diets, as it contains all essentials nutrients our body needs on daily basis and moreover it protects us from many harmful diseases and health conditions.

Ann Carr from SW England on April 11, 2021:

It really is a super-food isn't it? Great details here about lettuce. I eat it in the summer months, along with the usual tomatoes etc, but I'm not a great fan of it, taste wise. The crunchy ones aren't too bad and I do eat them, when I'm in the mood! I should eat them more as I have early osteoporosis. I take calcium tablets along with other specific medicine but lettuce would help me a lot it seems. I will endeavour to eat more after this encouragement, especially as it has more benefits than I realised.

Thanks for the education.
