Where Can I Find Happiness?

You look around you and see smiling faces, laughter echos in the distance. You look down at your shoes. You shuffle the small rocks on the ground in front of you and realize you aren’t happy.


You ponder for a moment and question, “What exactly is happiness anyway, and where can I find it?”.


Happiness is subjective. What brings you joy may not make someone else feel that fuzzy feeling. There are many steps you can do to bring more happiness into your life if you're feeling a little down.


Before proceeding, I would like to mention that many mental health disorders may contribute to depression and other behavioral problems. This article won’t be dwelling on those topics. Instead, this article will be about suggestions on how to get on the right track to living a more fulfilling and happier life.

What Is Happiness?

All of your life, you’ve heard that you need this or that to be happy. You should find a good job, a loving partner, family, and friends to live life to the fullest with a satisfying existence.


But, what exactly is happiness? The definition of happiness is a state of mind composed of living an accomplished and rewarding life. The term happiness describes the idea of a healthy and positive emotional and mental mindset.


There are a few interesting concepts that go hand in hand with happiness. Humans have chemicals and neurotransmitters in the brain. These neurotransmitters release different levels of these chemicals, which causes someone to feel a certain way.


We may feel joy in our hearts; however, our brain is doing all of the work.

What Causes Happiness?

As I mentioned above, our brains create and release chemicals. The human brain is an incredible machine that can master unfathomable things. Happiness is, of course, subjective. However, there are reasons why someone might feel happy.


It all boils down to these four brain chemicals: dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins.


Dopamine is associated with that fuzzy feeling you get when you get likes on social media or win money on a slot machine. It is also the reason for certain types of addiction. The brain releases dopamine during certain kinds of activities.


Serotonin is a social chemical that releases during an interaction, although; serotonin plays an entirely different role. Serotonin is associated with pride, status, and success. It is released when someone gets rewarded for good work.


Oxytocin is most well known for being called the "hugging drug" due to oxytocin releasing during physical contact. This chemical is associated with friendship, love, and trust.


Endorphins are best known for contributing to the runner's high that most people speak about when discussing that euphoric feeling after a jog. Endorphins are released when someone is experiencing pain. That can also happen when someone gets a tattoo or piercing.


These feelings are what cause different kinds of happiness. That includes love, accomplishment, physical contact, and even some forms of pain. All of these chemicals are important in maintaining a healthy and happy lifestyle.

Why Is Happiness Important?

You know what happiness is and what causes it, but why is happiness important? Everyone wants to experience that gleeful feeling on the inside, but what can it do you for?


Happiness is important for your body! Studies suggest that feelings of happiness improve your overall health, combat most life stressors, joy can boost your immune system, it can protect your heart, and even serve as a pain reliever. Some studies even suggest that it can help you live longer.

What Are The First Steps Towards Happiness?

Some of the best ways to be happier are simple. You don't need more money or a bigger house. You don't need fancier cars or cool clothes.


The best way to get happier is to see the happiness in someone else. Do something for someone, try and connect with another human being. A connection can improve your overall health. Try being more active and get your blood pumping. Be thankful for any blessing that you do have. Don't compare your life to others.


Boredom can be a cause for generalized sadness. Try something new or get interested in a new hobby. That can help to put some spice back in your life. Sometimes creating goals for ourselves can help us get back on track and feel more accomplished with where we are in life.


Staying positive can sometimes be easier said than done; however, sometimes a half-glass full kind of outlook is all that is needed for someone to bounce back.

As I’ve stated, happiness is subjective and you may need to find different ways to add more joy to your life.

Life isn’t always easy, and you will always have bumps in the road. However, your outlook on life can make a huge difference in where you are and where you want to be in the future.


A fluctuation in emotions is all a part of existing. Sometimes knowing that you are allowed to be unhappy can give you the freedom you need to put yourself back together. A good cry never hurt anyone. It’s all about getting up after you have fallen is what truly matters.
