What Is Anxiety?

The response our body gives to stress naturally is known as anxiety. In other words, it is an apprehension or fear of what will happen. For instance, going to an interview for a new job or giving a speech on stage can cause nervousness and anxiety in some people. You might have an anxiety disorder if your anxious feelings last for a minimum of six months, are extreme, and interfere with your daily life.

What are Anxiety Disorders?

Feeling anxious about taking a test, starting a new job, or moving to a new place is normal. Such anxiety might be unpleasant, but it helps motivate you to do a better job by working harder. It is ordinary anxiety that passes without interfering with your life. A person with an anxiety disorder feels this fear constantly, which is debilitating and intense. It leads to a person stopping doing things they enjoy. For instance, you might not even want to enter an elevator, cross the street, or leave your home. Anxiety worsens with time if not treated. It can affect anyone and is the most common emotional disorder.

Separation anxiety is when one fears being away from loved ones, home, or family.

Anxiety differs in individuals. It can vary from having butterflies in the stomach to a heart that's racing. It feels like there is a disconnect between the body and mind, and one feels out of control. You may feel worried and fearful and even fear going to a specific place. Symptoms of anxiety include:

What are the Causes of Anxiety?

Anxiety Treatments

Once you are diagnosed with anxiety, it is essential to seek treatment. You can manage your day-to-day life better once you get help. You can do either of the following three things:

  • Complemental health techniques
  • Medication

A psychologist or therapist can help you with the necessary tools to fight this condition. Benzodiazepines are medicines used for short-term relief; doctors generally avoid them if there is any risk of dependence. Other medications include escitalopram which is an antidepressant or antianxiety medication. It alters the brain chemistry effectively, reduces stress, and improves mood. Other medications are:

  • Selective serotonin uptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
  • Selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs
  • Antipsychotics
  • Benzodiazepines
  • Anxiolytics

Interestingly, over 40 million Americans suffer from an anxiety disorder. It is a common illness but is also treatable. You can use the following methods if you do not want to use medication to try and improve your condition. Let's dive in!

Take Care of Your Blood Sugar

Eating junk or skipping meals can make you irritable because it leads to a drop in blood sugar, even if you do not have diabetes. You get anxious and jittery. You must ensure that you have two snacks and three balanced meals in a day. Have foods like nuts, vegetables, fruits, and high-fiber eatables.

Stay Away From Stimulants

You can easily want to have another cup of coffee. However, herbal tea is always a better option for anxiety sufferers. You can aggravate your anxiety with prescription drugs, illicit drugs, nicotine, and caffeine.


Sleep Properly

While it might be easy to say this as anxiety and inability to sleep are linked closely, you must try to get enough sleep naturally or through medications. Not getting enough sleep can lead to worsening anxiety symptoms. It can lead to a cycle of irritability and sleeplessness.
