What is Amla? - Health Benefits, Uses for Hair and Skin, and Ways to Eat the Indian Gooseberry

Amla is one of the richest sources of vitamin C.

Amla is one of the richest sources of vitamin C.

What is Amla?

Amla is a deciduous tree that grows up to 20 to 30 feet high. Its botanical name is Phyllanthus emblica or Emblica officinalis. The tree is usually found in India and Nepal and this is why it is often referred to as the Indian or Nepalese gooseberry.

The word "amla" is derived from the Sanskrit word "amlaki". The tree is best known for its round, small and green fruit. The fruit has a sour and bitter taste. Except for the seed, all parts of the amla fruit are edible.

A major ingredient in most ayurvedic products, especially the Chyavanprash and the Triphala churna, amla is a potent fruit known for promoting health and longevity.

Amla has a huge importance in Ayurvedic medicine.

Amla has a huge importance in Ayurvedic medicine.

Importance of Amla in Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, regular consumption of amla balances all three doshas, that is, vata, pitta, and kapha. Its cooling properties balance both vata and pitta, whereas its drying properties have a balancing effect on the kapha dosha. In ancient Ayurveda practice, amla is used for promoting longevity, improving digestion, purifying blood, strengthening the heart, stimulating hair growth, enhancing concentration and memory, and alleviating respiratory problems.

Needless to say that in Ayurveda, amla is considered to be one of most powerful herbs for improving health and well-being. This is why it is a major part of the Triphala Churna, which is a combination of three of the most potent herbs, including amla. It is also the basis of the Ayurvedica Chyavanprash, a medicinal concoction, which is believed to protect the individual from all diseases and disorders.

Quick Facts about Amla

  • Amla is the richest source of Vitamin C.
  • It has beneficial effects on each and every organ of the body.
  • It is well-known ingredient in hair growth products.
  • It can be used as a fresh fruit, as juice, in capsules, in dried form as well as a powder.

Health Benefits of Amla

Amla is rich in vitamin C. A glass of amla juice contains twenty times more vitamin C than a glass of fresh orange juice. So, you can easily see why amla is so revered in Ayurveda. It is the richest source of vitamin C.

The fruit is also rich in proteins and fibers. It contains minerals such as iron, calcium, and phosphorus besides vitamins A and B.

The rich vitamin C content of this fruit makes it one of the strongest immune boosters available to mankind. This means that regular intake of amla will prevent you from all kinds of bacterial, viral and fungal infections.

Its cooling properties make it ideal for treating all kinds of skin disorders. So, if you are looking for a natural cure for your acne, give amla a try. It slows down the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

The fruit promotes longevity and slows down the aging process. Its strong antioxidant properties have a protective effect on your heart, lungs, brain, and skin.

Amla is considered to have a beneficial effect on respiratory disorders as well. It has been found to alleviate asthma symptoms.

Due to its beneficial effects on the secretion of insulin, amla is believed to control blood sugar levels in diabetic patients. Its rich chromium content is another reason why it is good for diabetics.

It works as a wonderful natural laxative for those with constipation. Amla strengthens the digestive system and improves its ability to digest food and absorb nutrients. The fruit is good for decreasing acidity. It is also an excellent liver tonic.

Amla is also considered to have a beneficial effect on your cardiovascular system. It strengthens the heart muscles, lowers cholesterol, and controls hypertension.

Regular consumption of amla juice or powder also purifies blood. Its rich vitamin C content promotes the absorption of iron. This is why it is beneficial in cases of anemia.

The rich antioxidant properties of amla make it a wonderful fruit for the brain. It prevents the cells of the brain from free radical damage, improves concentration and memory, and may prevent diseases such a dementia and Alzheimer's.

The health benefits of amla also extend to the reproductive system in both men and women. In women, it regularizes their monthly periods and strengthens the uterus. In men, amla increases the potency and sperm count.

Amla is also believed to improve eyesight and prevents the occurrence of all age-related eye conditions such as macular degeneration. As part of triphala, it is used as an eye-wash to relax and comfort eyes as well as improve vision.

The benefits of amla are endless and the list can actually go on and on. In short, one can say, that if you want to include a healthy herb in your diet, include amla. Its manifold benefits will surely not disappoint you in any way.

Amla beauty benefits for hair and skin

Regular intake of amla can cure acne and pimples and prevent further breakouts. The amla extract can also be applied directly to the face to reduce pimples and oiliness and give a glow to the skin.

However, its major benefits are for the hair. Indian markets are flooded with hair products containing amla extract. You will find amla hair oil, shampoos and hair packs freely available in India.

Regular use of amla strengthens the hair follicles, stimulates hair growth, keeps dandruff away, straightens your hair, prevents split ends and nourishes your hair. It also prevents premature graying of hair and stops hair loss.

The best way to use amla for hair is to make a home-made shampoo. Dried amla is usually used for this purpose. It is boiled along with reetha (soapnuts) and shikakai for about 10 minutes in plain water.

The contents are allowed to steep in this water overnight or for about eight hours. The liquid can then be drained and used for washing hair.

How to use amla to enjoy its many benefits

The best way to use amla is to consume its fresh juice. However, since this can be bitter and sour, most people may not be able to handle it.

A wonderful quality of amla is that heat or drying does not reduce its nutritional properties. This is why pieces of fresh amla can be added to your cooked vegetables.

Amla pickles and chutneys is another wonderful way to include this wonderful fruit in your regular diet. Other popular ways to consume this wonderful fruit is in the form of candies, sweets or murabba. Since these are sweet in taste, many people prefer consuming this fruit in these forms.

Include amla in your regular diet and beauty routine

Now that you know about the many benefits of amla for health, hair and skin, make sure to include it in your daily routine. It's healthy and nutritious content will not only be beneficial for your health but also for the well-being and long life of your children.

Hi Shankar,

If your hair graying prematurely, you will first need to find the cause. If it is heredity, then there isn't much you can do about it. If it is because of the food you are eating, the chemicals you are using on the hair, or any medication you are using you can definitely take some steps.

Make a shampoo at home with reetha, amla, shikakai and use it on your hair instead of store bought shampoos.

Apply oil at least twice a week. Olive oil or coconut oil is best. Leave on for at least 8 hours.

Stop eating fried, fast, and fatty foods. Eat more fruits and vegetables.

Drink at least 3 liters of water daily.

If you have any disease, especially related to the sinus or nose, treat it first.

Take a multivitamin capsule for 3 months.

All the best!

Hi Omair,

If hair follicles have been removed, it may not be possible to get the hair back. A consultation with a doctor who can check the condition of this patch on your head, however, could reveal something else.

But amla is good for health. So, you should use it for a health.

BetterAlive (author) on August 12, 2015:

Hi Jeeva,

You are quite young to have white hair. So, you must look at the reason why your hair is white. It could be the water you are using, or your diet? Are you smoking? Did your parent's hair start turning white at this age? Do you have any respiratory or digestive problems?

Lots of things could be the reason.

You can begin taking amla regularly. Best would be to take fresh juice every morning. It will not turn your white hair black, but it may help boost your immunity and stop more hair from turning white.

All the best!

BetterAlive (author) on August 12, 2015:

Hi Prem,

Amla has no side-effects. So, everyone can use it. Fresh fruit, pickles, jams, sweets, any form is fine. The only thing to watch out for is whether the product you are using has any other ingredients added to it.

For example, jams and morabbas will have sugar and preservatives or pickles will have oil and other ingredients.

This is why best is to take it as fresh juice, made right at home.

All the best!

Hi Mayur,

17 years is indeed quite young to have grey hair.

It is very difficult to say what the cause could be. I recommend you get in touch with a doctor to find the cause of this greying of hair. My guess is that it is due to hormonal changes or due to some kind of respiratory issues, such as sinus problems (you will be getting frequent colds and flu due to it).

Find out the cause and then take the treatment for this.

Amla will surely help. Take one-two teaspoon pure amla juice, mix it with some water and drink it in the morning.

You can also try Triphala for better results. Read about it here:

If at 20 years of age, your hair is falling excessively, the first thing you need to do is watch you diet and your digestion.

If you have constant stomach problems and are constantly stressed, this may be the root cause of your hair fall.

Take a multivitamin.

Take one amla or a glass of amla juice every day. Amla juice available in the market mostly require to be diluted. So, you will need to add some water to the juice before drink.

Hi Awesome,

Amla is great for health and it will build your immunity, so you won't fall sick very often. Two or three pieces of dried amla taken after meals should be enough. You could eat one piece after each meal, especially breakfast.

But if you want to gain weight, you will need to eat protein-rich foods that can help build muscles. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, whole grain bread, mayonnaise, chicken or turkey meat, milk, cheese.

Exercise is very important. It will help improve your overall body mass. You could try chyawanprash for fitness and weight gain, combined with nutritious foods. Read about it here:

Hi Melissa,

For teeth and gums, the best way would be to chew on fresh amla. If you have pain or infection in teeth or gum, you could apply amla juice.

You can use frozen amla too. Just allow it to thaw at room temperature for about 15-30 minutes and then use it. If you can eat it, great. If not, just make juice and use it.

You can also make pickles of this amla. Amla does not lose its nutrients even if you cook it. So, you can add it to your dishes as well. Or just toss some into your salad.

Use amla oil overnight and wash it off with mild shampoo the next day.

All the best!

Hi Priya,

You cannot reverse white hair, so the only thing that you can do is to color your hair. You can use natural products such as henna for this.

If your hair is turning prematurely grey, you should probably check for a few things. I will mention a few. Hormonal changes, sinus or nasal issues, improper diet, excessive weight loss or gain, excessive stress, excessive salt in the water you use for washing hair.

If you think any of these could be a problems, try to work on these. Besides this, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Avoid fried and spicy foods. Take a multivitamin. It will help.

All the best!

Hi Bhawna,

Any chemical treatment will cause some or the other harm to the hair. So, avoid using these as much as possible. If you do, you should take good care of these. Try out this link to get some remedies for hair fall.

Hi Rajesh,

Amla juice can help you here. You can take a glass of amla juice everyday for this in the morning.

You may want to try out Triphala powder for the same as it will be more useful in your case. There is a link to an article on Triphala in the above article.

All the best!

I have high blood pressure and hyper acidity, my question is, whether amla juice will help me to cure above disease and how much and when to take

BetterAlive (author) on August 02, 2014:

Hi Manzil,

If you are talking about eating amla, then 1-2 amla would be enough. If you want to apply it to your hair, then take about 4-5 pieces of dried amla, boil, strain and use or 3-4 teaspoons of the powder, make a paste and apply it on your hair.

All the best!

In how much quantity should I take smals for my hair?

BetterAlive (author) on June 06, 2014:

Hi India,

Best way to consume amla is to eat it fresh. The 2nd alternative way is to have it in juice form (most ayurveda practitioners often recommend this as the best way). Powder is also excellent. You could even try using Triphala.

You can add amla powder or juice to your vegetables and curries, just a couple of minutes before taking them off the fire.

All the best!

Thanks so much. I was looking to have better skin like a really nice complexion.

Btw, how do you consume amla? In cooking, can we use powdered amla and is it added at the end or in tadka? Please can you tell me what does ayurveda recommend, in what form to take amla. Thanks in advance.

Hi India,

The first thing that you need to ask yourself is what is that you expect to notice. I mean do you have any particular health issues that you want to heal or are you just looking for general health improvement.

If you are looking for general health improvement, the key factor to notice a general decline in falling sick, that is, generally you have lower number of colds and your digestion tends to be better, energy levels will be better, focus will be better, etc.

If you can try making murabbas at home, you can replace sugar with honey. The sweetness will not negate the health benefits of amla. But yes, if you are calorie conscious, you may want to avoid excess sugar.

You can use the traditional mortar and pestle for grinding. For this, you may want to boil fresh amla, remove the seeds, and grind it. You can add ginger or honey to this and store it in a bottle.

Of course, since nothing much has been done to preserve it, it will not last for months, just a few days. You can keep it in the refrigerator to extend its life. Depending on the climate of the place you stay, it could last up to 2 weeks.

And yes, the Vitamin C content does remain intact in every form!

All the best!

India on June 04, 2014:

Hi. I have been using amla powder mixed with ginger powder for few months now. But haven't really noticed anything but I am 17 so maybe that's why. I am really interested in the rasayana shastra and wanted to know how to preserve amla. I buy it in the powdered form and I hear that the Vitamin C content remains intact.

But isn't it like really hard when it's dry. How did the traditional Indian people who did not have electric mills and grinders, make the powder. And is there any other way to store and consume it fresh other than murabbas. Wouldn't the excess sweetness of the murabba negate any health benefits.

Hi Mark,

Amla is a nutritious fruit so, young children can also take it easily. However, avoid giving to a child who is younger than 1. Children, sometimes, do not like the taste of amla. So, you can give them amla murabbas or amla candy, which are as healthy as the fresh fruit.

All the best!
