What type of metabolism do you have?

  1. Road bike, designed for speed, the road bike is built light, lean and lightening quick. You can eat whatever you want and have a difficult time gaining weight and/or keeping weight on.
  2. Mountain bike, designed for speed with an emphasis on strength and durability to handle tough terrain. The mountain bike is a little slower than the road bike so it requires more effort for the rider in order to keep up with the road bike.You have the ability to be muscular and lean and are able to gain excess weight with little effort.
  3. Beach cruiser bike, designed for leisurely rides and require a lot more effort for the rider to keep up with the road bike or mountain bike. When riding the beach cruiser you can ride the same distance on a road or mountain bike, but the time it takes to reach your destination take a little longer. You gain weight by looking at food and have a difficult time losing weight and keeping it off.

You Are What You Metabolize!

Have you ever heard the saying " you are what you eat"? That statement is somewhat mis-leading because in actual fact "you are what you metabolize!" The reality is even if your exercise and nutrition is on point your genetic make up is a factor in achieving your health goals. No matter where you find yourself you will be able to re-program your metabolism. Depending on your body type it may take you longer than others.

The very first step in setting your health goals is finding your starting point. You need to know where to start in order to determine where you want to go and how fast it will take you to get there. Your starting point is learning what the current speed of your metabolism is. Metabolism is defined as the rate at which your body processes energy. The problem with today's "dieting" mindset is that individuals are all looking for the quick fix for instant gratification. But the reality is that once you learn your body type and metabolism speed you can set realistic goals for yourself to achieve over a period of time. The first question you need ask yourself, and maybe right it down, is how long did it take you to get in the health position you are in now? ...months? ...years? A common mistake made by individuals wishing to improve their health is they set their expectations too high and their actions don't meet their expectations. Be real with yourself, if it took a year to add on the weight you want to lose, give yourself a year to lose it! If you want to lose it faster then increase your actions! it's really that simple!

Let's start with determining your metabolism speed first;There are three (3) body types. Once you learn your personal body type you can gain a better understanding on where to start to reach your health goals. One of the biggest mistakes most people make is comparing themselves to someone who has a completely different genetic make up and body type than themselves. Don't make this same mistake, you would be setting yourself up for frustration and failure.


There are 3 Body Types

ECTOMORPH; You can eat whatever you want, whenever you want, and can't seem to gain weight. Food lovers are envious of you but you can get frustrated because you want to gain body mass but find it very difficult. You have a fast metabolism and your *set point is set very low.

MESOMORPH; You have the ability to be fit and gain lean body mass however it is very easy for you to gain excess weight and body fat. The plus side to the mesomorph's metabolism is that they have the ability to gain lean muscle mass. Your fat is primarily burned in your muscle so the more muscle you build, the more calories you burn, the faster your metabolism. You have a medium metabolism and your *set point is set at medium.

ENDOMORPH; You have a slower metabolism with the high capacity to gain weight and store body fat. It seems like if you even look at food you start to gain weight. You feel destined to forever struggle with weight and body fat. This is not true, it is possible for an endomorph body type to kick start and speed up their metabolism, it just takes more effort than the ectomorph or mesomorph to lose body fat. You have a high *set point with a slow metabolism.

To Sum It All Up

Your starting point is a combination of two things;

  1. Your Body Type
  2. Your Set Point

Along with all the choices you have made whether they are negative or positive. Accept where you are at right now, take control of your set point and re-program your metabolism into a fat burning machine! You can take your body to the next level and achieve your health goals.

*Your Set Point

Have you ever gained weight over the holidays or gone on vacation and come home with an extra 5-10 lbs? Once the holidays are over and you get back in to your routine you lose that excess weight within the following month or two. That temporary weight is "inflated weight". A weight gained that is above your average weight, caused by eating too much food and excess consumption of alcohol. The weight that you get back to is your "true weight", the weight your body maintains. This is why dieting works so well for the first couple of weeks. Typically we start dieting out of sheer frustration, when we are carrying inflated weight. Once that inflated weight drops quite quickly we reach our "true weight" and hit a plateau, the point at which the weight scale gets "stuck". That weight that you get stuck at is called your true weight or your "set point"

Physiologically your body plateaus at this point due to your body type, metabolism speed and your history of nutrition and exercise. Your weight regulating mechanism, or WRM, is located in part of your brain known as the hypothalamus. It decides whether your body burns or stores energy in order to maintain your set point. Let's call it your "appetite control centre"

Your appetite control centre can be compared to a thermostat. Have you ever set a thermostat to a certain temperature and once the room gets above that temperature the air conditioner kicks in to cool the room down to the temperature you set it at? or the temperature drops below and the heater kicks in to warm the room back up to that set temperature. Your hypothalamus is your weight regulating thermostat. it causes your body to maintain it's set point by either burning or storing energy. So when you have inflated weight from holidays your WRM allows your body to burn it off easily to bring your body back down to your set point.

Your set point is determined by your body type and speed of metabolism. The lower your set point the faster your metabolism. Ectomorphs have a low set point, mesomorphs have a medium set point and endomorphs have a high set point.

Does your metabolism slow down with age?

Have you ever felt that one day your "true" weight, which has been the same for a number of years, suddenly increased 5-10 lbs? This is the reason more and more people are turning to dieting. They were comfortable at that true weight and then suddenly the number on the scale increased! Typically you will hear people use the excuse "my metabolism is slowing down ever since I turned 40" or "it's because of hormones". These 2 factors can be part of the cause however the body does not adjust it's thermostat overnight.

Your body is like a car, it runs on fuel, called glucose. Every time you run low on fuel, you in fact have low blood sugar. (Typically caused by skipping a meal or eating too few calories) The only source of energy your body can turn to is found in your muscle. So when your blood sugar is low your body starts to burn your muscle for energy. Then typically you over eat because you are so hungry you then cause a spike in your blood sugar, which causes your body to over release insulin, and your body goes into fat storing mode. When this situation (loss of muscle, increase of body fat) occurs often enough (as you age) your set point will begin to rise over the years.
