How Does Weight Watchers Work? The Weight Watchers Points Plus Program

The new Weight Watchers program called Weight Watchers New Points System is a great way to jumpstart your weight loss. Having completed the program a few times after having our children, I can attest that the program works. Previously, Weight Watchers had two programs: Weight Watchers Flex Plan, which was based on the old Weight Watchers Points system, and the Weight Watchers Core Plan. These programs are no longer supported; instead a new program, the Points Plus program is advocated.

There are two ways to use the program: go to a Weight Watchers meeting near you or join www.weightwatchers.com. For first-time users, I recommend attending meetings. The cost is about $10 per meeting; the joining fee usually is on promotion for free. At the meetings you are privately weighed in and your weight is recorded. The meeting usually lasts for about 30 minutes and is based around a topic. Tips and advice are given as well as help in reaching your goal weight. This support system can be extremely valuable and helps keep you motivated and accountable. Resources are also given, and cookbooks and snack foods can be bought at the meetings.

I recommend joining Weight Watchers online if you are already familiar with the program and don't need the assistance provided at the meetings. You could also join online if you wanted to use the online services in addition to the meetings. The online service provides you with recipes, stories, a community, food ideas, and a point tracker system. Once you have joined Weight Watchers Online, you can download the free iPhone, iPad, or Android app. The apps are very well-done, allowing you to:

  • use the points calculator
  • check out cheat sheets
  • find a meeting
  • read articles
  • look at recipes
  • read success stories
  • more

Write Down What You Eat

In the times that I have been able to lose weight, the key for me was writing down or journaling everything that I ate. Weight Watchers recommends this, but I can't say enough how important it is to your weight loss. For moms and dads, I think it's even more important. The reason is because we are constantly feeding our little ones and a bite of this and a bite of that--if you are doing the same, that adds up. When you write down every bit of food that goes in your mouth, you tend to eat less--I know that I do! If you want to write down your points, I recommend the 3 Month PointsPlus Tracker Journal. You can buy it from Amazon or from the Weight Watchers site. For those that are also dealing with emotional eating, a journal is a great way to express how you're feeling as you lose weight and during those times that you "cheat." Going back and looking over what you have written can be extremely powerful.

The New Weight Watchers Points Plus System: How Is It Different?

The new PointsPlus System is different than the older Points system in a couple of ways. First, the new system no longer uses calories in the Points equation. The older system used fat, fiber, and calories to calculate a point value for a food. The new PointsPlus system uses fat, fiber, carbohydrates, and protein to calculate a point value. Because of this, you are given more points per day under the new system. The other bonus is that most fruits and vegetables are given a zero point value. Under the older Points system, only vegetables were given a zero point value.

The one similarity with the old Points program is your weekly allowance. Weight Watchers still gives you a little wiggle room to splurge with 49 weekly points to use as you please.

Weight Watchers for New Mothers

I have three girls and I used Weight Watchers after having each of my babies. It was a great program to get you back on track fairly quickly. If you are nursing, make sure that you follow the nursing mother guidelines. Your body needs more calories than if you weren't nursing. There were times when I knew my body needed more, and I listened to my body's cues. I think this system is great for new moms and helps you lose that baby weight quickly. Coupled with nursing, I was able to lose my baby weight with Weight Watchers.

The Old Weight Watchers Core Plan

The Weight Watchers Core Plan was created to serve participants that didn't like counting points. Certain foods are listed in the Core plan that participants can eat until satisfied, not full. All of the food groups are incorporated plus a bonus of 35 non-core points for added treats. Success with this plan is dependent upon portion control.

Here's a list of the Core foods:

  • Vegetables and fruits
  • Non-creamy Soups
  • Whole Wheat Pasta, Brown Rice, Potatoes and Grains
  • High Fiber and other cereals without added sugar
  • Lean Meats, poultry, fish and eggs
  • Fat-Free Milk Products
  • Healthy Oils
  • Condiments
  • Coffee, Tea and sugar-free beverages

The Old Weight Watchers Flex/Point Plan

In the Flex/ Points plan all foods have a point value depending on three factors: calories, fat and fiber. You are given a number of points a day. The number of points allotted depends on: age, current weight, height, gender, and amount you exercise.

You are then given extra points, Weight Watchers calls it Flex Points, to use at your discretion throughout the week. The old Points system had a different Flex plan where you banked points throughout the week to use. More points were given each day and those points that were unused could be transferred to another day for special occasions or treats.

The point values per day based on your weight are as follows:

  • Less than 150 lbs: 20 pts
  • 150-174 lbs: 22 pts
  • 175-199 lbs: 24 pts
  • 200-224 lbs: 26 pts
  • 225-249 lbs: 28 pts
  • 250-274 lbs: 30 pts
  • 275-300 lbs: 31 pts

Flex Points: 35 extra points a week to use as you choose.

Exercise: added points are given depending on your exercise time, activity and intensity.

26 is the lowest amount of points that you can have - because it's ideal for you to get in all of your healthy checks (fruits, dairies, proteins, etc) and you need those 26 points to get in those requirements for the most part. It may seem like a lot but trust me it works :)

I was even happier to see I eat many of these items already. I've been working on trying to lose about 30 pounds. I recently found out about a health issue I have most likely had for years, and that contributes to weight gain. If you have a smart phone or devise where you can get Google apps there is an app called Ultimate Points Calculator Plus. It's great! It $3.00, but worth every penny. My sister goes to Weight Watchers meetings so she has all the information and I was able to compare it to the official plan. Its exactly the same. It has a calculator, a daily diary to enter your food, you can save favorites, there's a food diary list you can search and they recently added the ability to search online too. It tracks your weight and measurements, healthy choices and exercise points and its exactly the same as Weight Watchers! It saved me because I can't afford to join weight watchers right now but I know they work because I've lost weight with them before in the past. They change the name of the app every once in awhile but right now its called Ultimate Points Calculator plus and has a picture of a red heart with a calculator inside it as its logo. I've lost 28lbs using it. I just can't believe you can get it for such a low price. Just wanted to let people know about it.

I've been very successful in the past losing 26 lbs, but need to do it again. Was disappointed that WW changed their plan but understand their reasoning. I don't want to buy all new books, join their meetings, or enroll online. I'll continue on their old flex points plan.

I like the old points system of weight watchers, I have lost 41 lbs. However, that new plus point system doesn't work well with me as I am a diabetic. I don't have a lot of problems with the veggies,as I do with the fruit. Being a diabetic, fruit and me don't mix and I gain 10 pounds on the new system sadly to say. I did return to the old points system and the 10 pounds I gain, I have taken back off.

Hey everyone today (July 8th '11) is my first day on the diet. I have decided to use Internet sources to figure out how many points items are.

One quick question I have is about fruits and vegtables. I was told my someone who is on the WeightWatchers Diet that all fruits and Vegtables are ZERO pts. so you can eat as much as you want but I have read online how some fruits/Veg. are between 1-3pts. My fiance wanted to lose 30 pounds before our wedding... he is a big/tall guy so he couldn't just stop eating the quantity he was used to. What we did was fill him up with this flaky fibre drink that you can buy at your local health store. It comes as a coarse powder and you add water to it and drink it. It slowly swells in your stomach - therefore filling the gap - but since it's all fibre, it goes straight through you and you don't gain weight from it! (obviously the bad thing about eating too much fibre, eek!!)

See if you can find it - it comes in quite big bags where you can make about a month worth of meal/drinks out of it!

I have very good things about weight watchers. For weight loss healthy eating and exercise is not always the answer, this doesn’t always work for everyone. Some people have medical conditions which prevent them eating particular foods and prevent them from exercising. Often we crave food we are allergic too.

Hi newbie, I am just starting the ww journey again today after being off the wagon for 5 years! I do not have a thyroid gland...years ago i had Hashimotos desease which is an autoimmune disease that destroyed the gland...and it was removed later. Anyway, I was successful five years ago when i lost 48 lbs after 7 months on WW..but I found that I had to stick with the daily points target and NOT have the extra 35 points each week. I walked everyday starting about 20 minutes a day up to an hour near the end...got disillusioned that the weight would not continue to come off as i still had 50 pounds to lose and then i gave up. It was stupid and i regret it now. I should have stepped up the exercise and hung in there...even though it is harder with a slow thyroid or no thyroid it can be done...good luck!!

I am a newbie, I have been on WW for 1 week and my weight is exactly the same, no loss. I have an underactive thyroid, can someone comment who also has an underactive thyroid and tell me about your weight loss on WW.

feeling a little discouraged, was hoping for a small weight loss. Does it matter what you eat while doing the point system? as long as you stay within your daily point allottment? I feel like i am consuming too much bread....but I am not eating more than my daily points..

Hi Robin, thanks for your hub. Weight Watchers has a good reputation for providing sensible and healthy weight loss plans. I agree with you that it is best to attend the meetings if you haven't done Weight Watchers before. Some people are easily tempted to use up all of their points on just the 'treats.' However, they then find it hard to stay on the plan because they are constantly hungry and depriving themselves of healthy whole foods.

The points system is slightly different in the UK. The amount of fibre is not taken into account when calculating the number of points food has. They also change the name of the programs, but the basic concepts are the same.

Weight Watchers is the best.  I gained over 50lbs w/ each of my pregnancies and lost it each time afterwards using the Weight Watchers plan.  I highly recommend it to anyone looking to lose weight.  Great hub, too!

Hello everyone! My name is Lisa. Close to a year and half ago I was at the heaviest weight I have ever been in my life! Due to stress from a relationship and "eating my emotions" I had gained several pounds. I am 4'9 so didnt look so healthy. I descided to give weight watchers a try especially from hearing such good things about it and actually seeing the results from others. I weighed in my first time in feb of 08 at 172 pounds. Through the course of year I continued to drop the weight by watching what I ate and following my points. I am now at 123 pounds and cant believe how good I feel. Its an amazing feeling! Just wanted to tell anyone that is looking into the plans or feeling a little down about themselves that this is a wonderful opportunity. It takes time but if your paitient and willing you will loose as I did an many others.

HI - I tried weightwatchers and it does work. The important thing is to stick to the program. Make it a lifestyle change, and not just a diet, that way you dont gain the weight back. I've tried diets before, they worked for my friends not for myself. So I think each person has to find whats best for them self. I would definetly recommend ww. If your having problems calculating points you can go to the website www.webmilhouse.com/pointcalc.php . Although you want to lose weight, keep in mind its always a wise decision to lose the weight, and more important to keep it off, have a healthy diet, and excersise. Scroll down from the top of this page and you'll find the number of points you can have per day. It's according to your weight. I am using the old system which allows me 28 points per day but I can eat up to 33. I CANNOT eat less than 28 and NO MORE than 33. Just look at the scale and match your points to your weight. Just remember to eat your minimun points every day and drink 6-8 glasses of water every day. Many people try to cut back points to loose more weight but it doesn't work that way. This minimum points raise your motabolism and keeps it to a max in order to burn burn fat. You also need to exercise after the third week or so. You really need to get a point scale from weight watchers and two booklets (Dining Out, and Complete Food Guide) these will help you through the process. Best of luck.

I really need to know how many pionts I can have a day or calories. See I have no money to go to the meetings and to put it as it is I'm FAT. I would like to lose about 70 lbs. I tried Weight Watchers a few years ago and lost 35 pounds in 8 weeks. I stopped and gained it all back. I started again because of diebetes and high blood preasure (I was 273 lbs.). 8 weeks later I am at 249 and my doctor has taken me off the blood preasure meds and cut my sugar meds in half. I also cannot afford to go to meetings, although I need to for encouragement, but the plan still works. I'm using the old points plan, but I'm currently looking into the flex plan. I AM GOING TO LOOSE FIFTY POUNDS. Mark my words.

It is great that they recognize the consumer's desires and created a separate plan. I know that when my in-laws used it they lost a ton of weight. Unfortunantly, they turned a lot of people off of it by trying to force everyone else to do it and criticizing our own plans. Weight Watchers is one of those companies that will be around a long time because they are flexible to the needs.

My office started Weight Watchers about (3) weeks ago. We are doing Weight Watchers at home. We keep each other honest and weight first thing every monday morning at 8am. There are three of us currently following the program. We have lost 43 pounds together. I'M A BELIEVER!

One caveat for people only reading this now: Weightwatchers has changed the points formula that they use for men. Men now get more points (because their bodies, not surprisingly, are different).

Hi there, I am trying to do the weight watchers flex plan without signing up as I don't have a lot of money. I have decided to invest in a gym membership and try to figure out the rest of it on my own.

I am wondering how you calculate the points you get back for exercise. I can find lots of recipes and stay within 22points (which is what I need) but I am concerned that if I work out, I will plateau if I don't calculate that part correctly as well??

thanks for sharing, i guess since you're talking baout points as rewards etc, the name weight watchers is kinda questionable and then the concept of counting points is just as funny, but then again if it gets results who can argue with that!
