Side Effects and Benefits of Eating Watermelon
Is Watermelon Good for You?
Watermelon is a refreshing fruit grown in temperate to tropical climates. Many look forward to enjoying this fruit when it's in season during the warmer months of the year because of its distinct flavour, appealing crunch and sweetness. In addition to tasting good, watermelon is packed with healthy vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. However, watermelon can also pose minor health risks if eaten in excess.
Nutritional Overview of the Fruit
Let's take a look at the general nutritional value of 1 cup of the fruit (152 grams).
- Calories: 45.6

- Protein: 0.93 g
- Fat: 0.23 g
- Carbohydrates: 11.5 g
- Fiber: 0.61 g

- Vitamin C: 12.3 mg

For only 1 cup, those are some pretty impressive nutrient levels.
Side Effects of Eating Too Much Watermelon
As with most things in life, overindulging in watermelon can lead to some unpleasant side effects.
Diarrhoea and Other Digestive Disturbances
Although this fruit is mostly water, it has a high fructose content. Fructose is a monosaccharide, a fermentable short-chain carb that's part of the group of FODMAPs, which can be hard for some people to digest. Especially if you're sensitive to FODMAPs, eating too much watermelon can cause symptoms like bloating, gas or diarrhoea.
Elevated Blood Sugar
Watermelon has a high glycemic index, so eating a lot could spike your blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes, you should be particularly mindful of the amount you consume.
Cardiovascular Irregularities
This one only concerns those with preexisting conditions that could impair your body's ability to flush out and manage excess potassium, like liver disease, heart disease or type 1 diabetes.
This fruit is high in potassium (two slices provide more than what's found in a banana!), which, in excess, can lead to a slow or irregular heartbeat, muscle weakness, chest pain, difficulty breathing and/or potential sudden collapse. Even with these conditions, you'd have to eat at least a whole watermelon to be at risk of hyperkalemia, the condition of excess potassium in the blood.
Skin Discolouration
As with other lycopene-rich foods, like tomatoes or guavas, eating watermelon in excess could lead to lycopenodermia, a temporary condition causing the skin to turn a deep orange colour. It usually reverses when lycopene is removed from the diet. Again, you'd have to eat quite a bit more watermelon than normal for this to be a concern.
Health Benefits of Watermelon
Don't let those side effects scare you off completely, though; including watermelon in your diet in moderation can provide a number of health benefits. Besides, it's delicious!
Helps You Stay Hydrated
Our bodies are hydrated not only from the water we drink but also from water in the food we eat. Watermelon consists of over 90% water. Staying hydrated is essential for our bodies to effectively perform so many functions, which include transporting nutrients to cells, eliminating waste, maintaining body temperature and keeping joints lubricated. Since watermelon season is typically in the warmer months, eating watermelon is a great way to stay hydrated in the summer heat.
Could Improve Mild to Moderate Erectile Dysfunction
Watermelon is the best food source of the amino acid citrulline. In the body, citrulline is converted into arginine, another amino acid. This increases nitric oxide levels, improving vasodilation, or the widening of the blood vessels. A study published by the National Library of Medicine shows that this relaxing effect on the blood vessels is similar to what the active drug in Viagra, sildenafil, causes. Thus, the consumption of watermelon may enhance libido.
Supports a Healthy Heart
A study conducted by Florida State University, as well as one conducted by Purdue University, indicates that the process of vasodilation mentioned above can also improve arterial health. And thanks to its high levels of lycopene, an antioxidant, watermelon can help maintain or lower cholesterol. Healthy arteries and cholesterol levels are important parts of a well-functioning heart.
Helps Keep Your Skin Healthy
Watermelon is packed with vitamins A, C and B6. Vitamin C supports the body's production of collagen, which helps keep your skin elastic. Found in the form of beta-carotene in watermelon, vitamin A can help combat skin cell damage from the sun, pollutants and ageing. A deficiency in vitamin B6 is linked to skin conditions like seborrheic dermatitis.
How to Enjoy This Summer Fruit
After learning about how healthy it is, I'm sure you're eager to eat some watermelon next time it's in season near you. Watermelon is delicious eaten as is, blended up to make juice (or even a cocktail), in savoury or fruit salads and in many more ways.
Tips for Picking a Good Watermelon
At the grocery store, every melon might look different, and it can be tricky to determine which one to choose to get the best flavour and texture. These tips will help you pick a good watermelon every time:
- Identify the "field spot" on the melon; this is the part that was in contact with the ground while it grew. A pastel yellow or orange colour usually indicates a riper melon, while white or very light yellow suggests the watermelon is underripe or lacking in flavour.
- Pick one with a consistent stripe pattern—dark green and creamy yellow suggest the most flavourful melon.
- Knock! Gently knock on the melon with a fisted hand and listen to the sound it makes. A hollow sound usually means it's ripe, but if it's high-pitched, it likely isn't ready yet.

Linda, I do hope you get to normal health soon. Even good food in excess can cause harm.
Linda K Jackson on July 28, 2019:
I love watermelon more than almost any food on earth. This year, I found seeded melons that taste like the ones I ate years ago as a kid. Juicy, extremely sweet with all the fibers running through it. I started to eat it every single day, pour the juice into glasses and mix it with sparkling water. I've done this for the last couple of months or so. Then, just this week, I started experiencing chest pain, pounding in my chest, tingling and numbness in my hands and my blood pressure rose. I was diagnosed with hypertension and a-fib six months ago and am on three medications for hypertension, and one for rapid heartbeat. I had absolutely no idea that watermelon could cause such a reaction due to the amount of potassium it contains. I just bought one yesterday and am so sad that I have to give it away. I'm frightened out of my mind and hope my symptoms ease up after I stop eating my favorite food.

O yes.....love love watermelon. One of our greatest pleasures in the summers growing up in Virginia was when the huge luscious watermelons were ready for us to enjoy. I can remember us gathering around outside underneath huge mimosa trees and munching on that delightful food....juice running down our arms and necks. YUM....and this summer the watermelon is divine here in Florida...it seems some years the melons are better than others and this year is one of them. Angels are once again headed your way ps

I just experienced severe rush after eating too much watermelon for about two weeks. It started a week ago with partial rush on my body, but last night, after my dinner portion my whole body flared up. I also had other foods that are very high in lycopene , such as papaya, strawberry, blueberry, blackberry and tomato... Never happened before...
A Person with Common Sense on November 05, 2016:
Hey, I like your attempt on the article however you are mistakenly misinformed. Firstly, 560 mg of potassium? That amount is not even close to a high amount on a daily basis from watermelon. The optimal healthy diet not like the western diet here is a 2.5 to 3/ 1 ratio of potassium to sodium. You can have over 4500 mg of potassium per day so your argument for cardiocascular problems is completely false. Also you talk about over eating watermelon will cause intestinal disturbances? So will the alternative which is most western diets of enriched flour and dairy be any better? Everything has side effects but if you're talking about overeating on a fruit or processed crap which most north americans would choose to eat, then you're the fruit is a much better alternative. You dont think frozen pizzas, tomato pastes and high fat and sugar content foods wont cause intestinal problems? Sorry id rather over eat on watermelon. What a ridiculously false-leading article. Go learn some research on optimal health and stop basing your facts and dietary ideologies on a western diet because it isnt a good diet to start with.

Kathryn on July 27, 2016:
Ok that makes sense. Thank you!
Rajan Singh Jolly (author) from From Mumbai, presently in Jalandhar, INDIA. on July 27, 2016:
Kathryn, overripe fruits can cause upset stomach in certain people because they are extra sensitive to it. There is increased bacterial activity & sometimes even fermentation starts and this is usually the cause in fruit past their ripeness.
Kathryn on July 26, 2016:
Pretty interesting article! I noticed for myself whenever I eat overripe watermelon or watermelon that has sat out too long I keep getting sick from it. I know when I eat too much I get lots of gas pain but when I eat it overripe or slightly rotten I get egg burps, terrible gas and upset belly. Then the diarrhea hits. This always starts a few hours after consumption. I experience the same with lettuce. I keep wondering what it is. I'm guessing a bacteria that may form while breaking down? I know this can be from overconsumption but this hasn't been the case many many times. I don't consider one cup of watermelon too much do u? So if there's any relevance between the two I'd be interested in hearing. Also i do wash my melon beforehand! Often with soap and water but this time I forgot to use soap and just rinsed it.

Thought I had a virus but was eating a whole watermelon a week so on a fluke I decided to see if there were side affects from that and everything I was experiencing - nausea, gas, headaches, vomiting were all caused because I over did it on this delicious summer fruit. Am now off of it until my body regulates itself. Moderation is the key word! Tomatoes aee also in the same league so I will not eat my tomato sandwiches right now. Really makes you feel bad - even had irregular heartbeats.
Pastor Johnny Dee on July 06, 2016:
This is a good article, but there is some signifcant medical misinformation that needs to be addressed: "This is all the more important for those who suffer from kidney dysfunction, as their kidneys are unable to remove the excess potassium. Hyperkalemia is found to result from kidney dysfunction."
This is not true. Some kidney disorders do cause hyperkalemia, but others such as Gitelman syndrome (which I suffer from) actually cause hypokalemia. In short: I cannot retain potassium, as my body insists on wasting it (along with magnesium, sodium, and chloride). Your warning is appropriate for most people, but the blanket statement that all kidney disorders result in hyperkalemia is incorrect, and should be fixed. Cheers, though, for an otherwise great and well-researched article!

Keep your water intake up to prevent dehydration. You should be back to normal in about 2 days.
