Hycid is a brand of omeprazole (Prilosec) manufactured by XL labs India. It is commonly used for heart burn, gastritis, and stomach ulcers. It is available over the counter.
What are the uses of Hycid?
Hycid can be used for gastritis, heartburn, and stomach ache. In addition, it can be used for prevention of gastric side effects of various NSAID pain killers such as Brufen and Voltaren.
How Hycid works?
Human stomach has one of the strongest acids (Hydrochloric acid). It is use to help digesting proteins and it helps to destroy infective agents. However, having strong acidic environment could cause destruction of stomach wall. It is because the stomach wall is also made up of proteins.
However, there are certain protective mechanisms in place to protect stomach wall from digesting. It include a strong mucous barrier, and tight junctions of stomach wall cells.
Gastritis is caused by disruption of this delicate balance by way of increasing acidity or decrease of above protective mechanisms.
Hycid acts by way of reducing gastric acid secretion. It is one of the strongest inhibitors of gastric acid secretion. Therefore, balancing the effects of disruption.
What is the dose?
Usual dose is 20mg twice per day after meals. You should not crush capsules. It contain coating that protects itself from gastric contents. Therefore, crushing would result in destruction of this medications strength. It is absorbed from lower down in the intestines and reaches blood. Then through blood it acts on the acid secreting cells of the stomach wall and stops secreting acid.
How to take Hycid?
This medication comes as a small crystals in a capsule. This medication should be taken with a full glass of water. Usually it should be taken after a meal. To minimize side effects it should be taken with a full glass of water and keep upright for around 10 minutes. Never crush before taking this medication.
What are the alternatives?
Gastritis and heart burn can be treated mainly from antacid medications such as Aludrox and Graviscon syrup. In addition, it can be treated with H2 receptor antagonists such as Famotidine.
What are other gastritis medications?
This medication can be taken with painkiller such as paracetamol (Panadol) to treat painful gastritis. Since this medication takes time to act, taking antacid such as Aludrox would help to achieve immediate heartburn.
What are the commonest side effects of Hycid?
Hycid is a well-tolerated medication. In fact, very few people notice side effects of it. Most common side effects are nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. In addition, headache is another common side effect. However, most western medications have above side effects.

One of the most concerned side effect specific to this medication is reduction of bone mineral density or osteoporosis in long term use. It can cause fractures. Therefore, this medication is not recommended for long term use, without prescription from a doctor.
This medication can cause allergic reactions in susceptible individuals. A more serious type of allergic reaction called Anaphylactic shock can very rarely. It is a serious type of allergic reaction that can be life threatening. But most medications and substances can be allergic to certain individuals. Therefore, it is not an isolates side effects of this medication.
It is characterized by wide spread hives, breathing difficulties, edema of lips and severe reduction of blood pressure.

Serious long term side effect of Hycid is Osteoporosis.
