Using Soursop Tea to Treat Cancer

How many of us are aware that research results indicate that soursop tea is beneficial in the treatment of up to twelve types of cancers? These include breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer, to name a few. It must be noted that unlike chemotherapy treatment the medicinal compounds in sour sop only attack cancer cells, and does not negatively affect the surrounding healthy cells. It is inexpensive and has no established side effects on the body. Sour sop can be taken as a tea, supplement or juice.

I recently came across a discussion on a certain site where the poster shared her knowledge of individuals using the soursop tea to treat their cancer. The core of the post was about a couple who had to deal with cancer of the lymph glands. The wife was suffering from this ailment. A web search using the words "gleaner report on couple using soursop to cure cancer" took me to the story of Raymond Kirlew and his wife. It is a fascinating story with aspects to which many cancer patients and their relatives and friends can relate. Here's the link.

Natural Aid for cancer Treatment

Natural Remedies vs Pharmaceutical Medicines

I am a big fan of natural remedies for any complaint. I just do not have much faith in pharmaceutical medicines. I will qualify or should I say explain my statement.

Pharmaceuticals are very important and should not be ignored (at least not totally) when it is needed/prescribed to treat an ailment. What I hate is all the side effects they come with, the expense associated with them, and the secondary ailments some of them tend to bring on resulting in the need to get another set of pharmaceutical medicine to cure the new ailment.

A huge credit should be paid to the pharmaceutical companies and the undeniable contributions they made and continue to make in making our society almost, if not totally free of many diseases. Many diseases have either been cured or brought under control through their research and development of medicines.

Within the same breath, we cannot deny that there are many of these medicines which seem to create their own complications resulting in dependency on one pharmaceutical or the other. While some rid the body of an ailment another seems to poison the system. Pharmaceutical companies have been said to be among the largest money earners. That is definitely not hard to believe.

Natural Remedies have Side Effects Too

Let us not be mistaken. Natural herbs also have their own adverse effect on the human system if care is not taken during its use and administration. It is best to know the benefits as well as the contraindications associated with each herb or food used as a natural remedy.

Many persons found an answer to their complaint only after taking the decision to forego their doctor's advice or course of treatment and try something else. It is important to remember to never totally ignore one's doctor no matter what the decision. It is also important to remember that we all respond to treatment differently, and so what works for one man does not have to work for another even if the complaint is the same.

That said, I can now pay attention to sharing what I have learnt about soursop tea being used to treat cancer. The focus is on the fruit, leaves and bark of the sour sop or graviola plant.

Preparing Soursop Tea

Benefits of soursop leaves/soursop tea and how to prepare it.

My mother has always related the benefits of soursop tea. This is made by steeping the leaves pretty much just like any other tea here is made. If the fresh leaves are available, you can slightly crush them then pour on some hot water. Allow to stand for 15 minutes.

Sour sop tea bags are now available on the market. Here is the is the recipe:

Recipe for Soursop Tea

Green leaves

2 - 3 leaves per serving ( tear them in pieces or slightly crush them).

1 tea cup hot water

Blue Agave nectar or honey is best for sweetening (cancer patients should avoid sugar).

Individuals using the tea to treat cancer please remember that cancer loves sugar. That is the reason it is best to avoid using sugar as a sweetener.

Method: Pour on the hot water and allow it to stand for 15 minutes, or until you are satisfied it is well steeped. Alternatively, you can boil the leaves for short while then allow it to stand and steep a bit more. I prefer doing it this way. Add leaves to the cold water and allow it to boil rapidly for approximately five minutes (you can see the water turn green) then just let it stand a bit more while it cools. This way it takes less than 15 minutes. You can experiment to see how strong you like it so you can determine how long you prefer to steep your leaves.

Making tea with dried soursop leaves

The method would be just like that for the green leaves, but personally I think its best to boil rapidly. This is because I believe the dried leaves release their components slower than the green leaves. Some rapid boiling action, and a follow-up steeping while I allow it to cool a bit always works for me.

Remember: Bits of the bark can be used as well, and short rapid boiling action also works best to make the most of the leaves and bark.

I do remember being told that the plant is strong, so there was no need to use many leaves to make sour sop tea. One or two leaves might be enough for one person. I am really not sure on that, but that's the recommendation I follow. The leaves can be used green or dried. The usefulness of the plant for nerve ailments is another benefit I recall being told of. A concoction from both the leaves and the bark of the soursop plant is used to treat cancer.

In a nutshell among the major benefits of soursop tea are its ability to:

  • Cure cancer (use leaves along with the bark to make the tea).
  • Cure or alleviates nerve ailments.
  • Individuals who had difficulty sleeping have also related that the soursop tea helps them to sleep better.

Vitamins and Other Nutrients in Soursop

Now remember, you benefit from having soursop as a tea (leaves and bark), as a drink (soursop punch) or just opening up the fruit and devouring the rich, succulent, white, milky saps. Whether you are a cancer patient or simply enjoy having some soursop, here is another interesting bit of information for you.

Enjoying a nice tall glass of creamy, smooth refreshing soursop juice has more to offer than downing a nice drink. It is a powerhouse of vitamins and other nutrients.

Vitamins

Vitamins help the body convert foods such as carbohydrates into fuel (carbohydrates to glucose). Soursop contains significant amounts of:

Vitamins C

This nutrient is a well known and highly regarded antioxidant. An antioxidant is a nutrient that prevents free radicals from causing some level of damage to our bodies. Free radicals are a marked culprit in cancer formation, and are produced as by-products of the foods we ingest that are transformed into energy.

Our bodies require Vitamin C for a variety of reasons. These include the growth and repair of tissues, healing wounds as well as the repair and maintenance of cartilage, teeth and bones. Vitamin C also plays an important role in the formation of collagen. Collagen is a protein substance that our body produces and use to make our skin, form scar tissues when we have a wound, and also for the formation of blood vessels, tendons and ligaments.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamine)

This is a water soluble nutrient that acts as a coenzyme in the body's metabolism. It plays an important role in maintaining cellular function and therefore a number of organ functions. Beriberi is a disease of the heart and nervous system that results from a deficiency of Vitamin B1. Those suffering from serious liver conditions are given Thiamine supplements.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin)

Remember Vitamin B1 acts as a coenzyme in the metabolism process? Well Vitamin B2 is essential for the reactions of coenzymes such as this. Insufficient amounts of vitamin B2 in the body leads to an inflammation of the lining of the mouth and skin.

Other Nutrients found in Soursop

Soursop is also rich source of:

Mineral

Protein

Carbohydrate (particularly fructose)

Calcium

Iron

Phosphorus

It is basically a whole food, and aside from the cancer benefits it is great for treating conditions such as arthritis, obesity, hemorrhoids, heart and kidney conditions.

An Aphrodisiac

A healthy sex drive is worth a million to many of us. Soursop drink is highly regarded in the Jamaican culture for its aphrodisiac properties. It is a traditional accompaniment to the Sunday dinner in many homes.

Note: Soursop is a great addition to our diet, but don't expect it to perform untold miracles if you are not supporting it by eating properly and maintaining some level of physical fitness.

All the goodness of soursop could not be contained in one article. Please see Part 2 for more.

Hi Segun,

I have not come across any information that says soursop kills digestive cells, but rather that it aides/improves digestion. All I can suggest is that possibly the indigestion is a first reaction. If you can access the fruit try to make a punch for your father (see videos in the article) or just juice and mix with a little lime/lemon juice and honey. See how his digestive system reacts to the juice. Possibly it will help build the digestive tract and make it stronger for the tea.

I would like to hear how that goes for you. All the best to you and your dad.

Hi Lisa,

I have never used the tincture before, but in the story that inspired me to write this hub the lady who had the cancer experienced a lot of pain after drinking the soursop tea. She was tempted to stop, but the husband persuaded her that possibly the pain came from the soursop tea doing its work to eradicate the cancer cells. Other research I have done indicate that people should expect to feel pain similar to what they would feel during a chemo. Please see the lady's story here http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/20100118/news/n...

I would continue taking it. All the best to you and your dad.

Can somebody tell me if graviola tincture does any harm?? My dad had an operation recently, he has lingua laring cancer, but whenever he takes graviola tincture 10-20 drops with glass of water he feels to much pain in that area (throat) and also feels to tired and sleepy, what do you think, do I have to give him or stop them? Please help.

Althea Reader (author) from Jamaica on December 02, 2012:

Hi Roman. Sorry for the late response. For some reason I seem to have passed over your comment. Can you locate a West Indian health food store? They may be able to help you. You could also consider asking anyone you may know from the West Indies or any other area that the plant can be found if they can assist you in getting some.

I am not sure what the European regulations are on travellers taking back herbs with them, but if there are restrictions I can only give two other suggestions:

1. Make acquaintance with the operator of a WI health or grocery store or a West Indian who sells in the marketplace. They do exporting and may be able to get some sour sop leaves for you. Do be mindful though of anyone who may try to rip you off.

2. Purchase from Amazon and have them ship it to you. I guess that may depend on where in Europe you are located.

Roman on October 08, 2012:

Hello,

Thank you for your post, it is very, very useful!

I would like to ask, if you know, where I can get Graviola fruit and Graviola leaves in Europe?? It's very tough to find it here... Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kim Ryan this is how I drink the tea

2)SOURSOP/GRAVIOLA LEAVES

Used to make a tea

This is the way to prepare the SOUR SOP leaves and bark .

Use about half a pound of leaves and stems, about two branches. wash them thoroughly and place them in about a gallon of water, in a sturdy pot (preferably stainless steel).

After boiling about 20 minutes, turn off the heat and leave to cool and soak for about 8-12 hours or overnight, if prepared in the evening. Bottle in glass or plastic container(s) and refrigerate.

How to take tea

For two weeks, drink about half a pint three times a day preferably before meals, early morning, midday and before bedtime.

For the next two weeks, drink about half a pint two times a day morning and evening.

For about a month after, drink a half a pint once per day, preferably in the morning before eating.

The leaves and stems are either taken fresh from the tree or dried.

Good Luck

Another Method of Preparing Soursop Tea and how many cups a Cancer Patient should drink per day

Through my continued research and in response to your questions, I have found information on another method of preparing soursop tea and how many cups a cancer patient should take per day for treatment.

Prepare Soursop tea by

Boiling 10 old, dark green soursop leaves in 3 cups water.

Allow it to boil and evaporate to just one cup.

Divide the tea and drink twice per day.

Effects: It is said that the patient feel some heat in the body similar to that felt during chemotherapy. After two weeks of treatment with the sour sop tea the cancer patient can go to the doctor for a check up.

Thanks for responding

I think it is bad when doctors do not pay tribute when and where it is due and assist their patients to access affordable treatment. It is hard enough to have to deal with cancer without having to struggle with the related expense.

It is good to hear that your daughter-in-law found a savior in this natural product.

My daughter-in-law had breast cancer. She told the doctor she was taking graviola. He told her "It can't hurt." Within 6 weeks the tumor had shrunk on its own and she went into remission. The doctors said they had never seen anything like it. Of course they did not attribute it to the graviola. They called it spontaneous remission. Go figure.

Thanks for sharing that bit Terry. I will certainly be checking out your blog. That is a topic which is of interest to us as women.

What a great post. I am into anything natural for healing.

I have candida and am healing myself naturally. I have a blog. My Journey With Candida. If you go to my profile you can get the url.

I also do product promotions if they are candida friendly.
