What will happen and go on within your body when you quit smoking? Read on to find out. Stop smoking today, right now, it's bad for you!
One, both, or none?
Cough cough cough
Quit smoking! It's bad for you!
You've probably been smoking many years if you are reading this article. By now you know what comes along with smoking tobacco products...declining health, maybe a chronic cough, stench, expense, burns in clothing and cars, dirty ashtrays, yellow teeth, higher insurance premiums, shortness of breath, and yet you still do it. I smoked for 17 years, and I finally began vaping when I just couldn't breath! I was out of breath going up 1 flight of stairs! 1! I tried cold turkey quitting multiple times and failed. I am now off of tobacco cigarettes 100%!
Why do we smoke when we know it's one of the dumbest habits we could ever pick up??
Because of that lovely chemical we call nicotine. Nicotine in and of itself is not that bad, it's the additives and chemicals added to cigarettes that wreck your health. Nicotine doesn't stick around your body for long. It has a half-life of about 60 minutes, meaning that six hours after a cigarette, only about 0.031 mg of the 1 mg of nicotine you inhaled remains in your body. So...you want more, and you want to keep those levels even in your bloodstream throughout the day. Nicotine is about as harmless as caffeine in the human body.
Nicotine initially causes a rapid release of adrenaline, the "fight-or-flight" hormone.
- Rapid heartbeat
- Increased blood pressure
- Rapid, shallow breathing
- Increased focus
- nicotine improves your reaction time and your ability to pay attention, making you feel like you can work better, since it's a central nervous system stimulant
However, health problems associated with using tobacco products are far worse than any benefits, this is from carcinogenic additives. These can include:
- Heart disease
- Chronic cough and congestion
- Shortness of breath
Many of these are actually caused by other chemicals in cigarette smoke. The biggest problem with nicotine is how easily you become dependent on smoking or chewing tobacco when using products infused with other carcinogens, not using nicotine in and of itself.
So...what if you could still inhale your nicotine like a traditional cigarette, without 4000+ carcinogens? What if you could choose the level of nicotine cessation you were comfortable with until you were able to quit? What if you had the freedom to "smoke" where you wanted, without the ill affects it has on your loved ones with second hand smoke? What if you could still get your fix, without all the disgusting side affects of smoking a traditional cigarette? Would you consider making the switch? At first I hesitated, but I'm so glad I did!
Let's first consider your options
CONTINUE SMOKING TRADITIONAL CIGARETTES
- Health issues
- limitations of where you can smoke
- exposing and intoxicating your body to thousands of harmful chemicals
USE CHEWING TOBACCO
- still get your nicotine
- have to carry a disgusting spit cup
- risk mouth cancer from all the chemical additives
- about the same expense as above
USE GUM, PATCHES TO QUIT
- skin irritation, mouth irritation
- nothing like smoking
- improper use
QUIT COLD TURKEY
- obviously this is the best option, but it's very hard to do, I've found "cold turkey" is like sending yourself into withdrawal hell. I've tried multiple times and failed miserably and embarrassingly each and every time. I'd get all siked up, set my quit date, tell everyone I was quitting (to be accountable), and fail by the 3rd month.
- have the sensation of smoking as you normally would
- subject yourself to 3-4 chemicals, not thousands
- pay a fraction of the cost when compared to traditional smoking, my monthly expense was literally cut in half.
- lower insurance premiums because you are NO LONGER a tobacco user
- Cheaper life insurance for same stated reason as above.
- no limitations on where you can smoke
- variety of styles, flavors and options
- The option to quit nicotine at your own rate as you gradually reduce the doses in your chosen eliquid, you can even use vaper with no nictotine at all!
- fun, and oddly enough, can easily turn into a hobby

Health concerns with vaping
Please read my article (at the top of this page) on what to expect when you quit smoking cigarettes. Also educate yourself on detox symptoms. I smoked for 17 years, on average 1 pack a day. It's important to remember that when you quit smoking cigarettes you will have a time period of heavy detox. Even if you are not coughing and full of phlegm, or out of breath, your body is still full of toxins that need to be expelled. You may not cough up anything (I rarely do and I'm about 5 months smoke-free), I still have a hard time breathing, but my endurance is improving. Unless you are allergic to the contents in eliquid, it is very rare that you'll experience any ill affects or breathing problems. And if you are allergic, you will display symptoms of an allergic reaction. Hives, rash, breathing issues (such as closing of the throat), if this happens to you, seek medical care immediately.
So what is Vaping??
Firstly, Vaping is not smoking
Vaping is for current adult smokers , that want to continue their habit at a reduced risk to their health. That is why I made the switch. Vaping has been gaining momentum and popularity in the last few years!
Vaping utilizes a Propylene Glycol or Vegetable Glycerin based liquid, mixed with small amounts of nicotine and flavoring that get vaporized in a small battery powered atomizer. Simulating the experience of smoking. The vapor created is inhaled and exhaled much like cigarette smoke hence the term “VAPING” as opposed to “SMOKING”
Vaping is similar to smoking, and probably the only cessation tool that mimics smoking so precisely. Making it easier to transition from tobacco cigarettes, to vaping, to nicotine independence!
There is a slight change in the habit that occurs because you have to get used to using a machine to deliver your nicotine. No more lighters, packs of cigarettes, matches, etc...
The devices mimic a cigarette but are typically heavier and have many options. Vaping fluid, ejuice or eliquid comes in many tobacco flavors, fruit flavors, coffee flavors, various levels of nicotine (if you are choosing Vaping for cessation, this gives one the option to "step" down on nicotine levels before quitting, similar to Nicoret), it's a really great option. You can also buy eliquid in a vitamin form, that has no nicotine and is simply "inhaled vitamins" such as vitamin A, D, E.
I like the tantalizing things I can do to my taste buds with Vaping, I never feel deprived or go through withdrawal unless I decide to do so. The downside is getting use to the new form of how you get the nicotine, but once you do, you start reaping rewards immediately. You may find you need a higher dose of ejuice and step down to lower levels in the beginning. Sense of smell and taste return, you no longer smell like a cigarette, you're not polluting friends or family with your habit, no more car stench or burn marks on your clothes, no more worry of burning your house down, your teeth get super white, and toxins in your lungs begin to expel from your body!
In this day and age, smoking is frowned upon. It's not popular, it doesn't make you cool, trendy, or smart, and really...it's just plain old rude. Vaping is the "smart" alternative, until you quit using nicotine.
Some people say that Vaping is actually worse for your health then smoking. I am not falling for this. You don't have to have a high IQ to know that Vaping is the healthier safer alternative. It has 3-4 chemicals. Smoking has thousands. And it's much nicer on your wallet! And lets be realistic, if you've smoked for a year or longer, how concerned have you honestly been about your health? Vaping is not as dangerous or damaging as smoking.
There are still small dangers associated with nicotine use, so caution is still advised when ingesting it. As a pure drug, nicotine has few adverse effects on physical health, however it does raise blood pressure and accelerates the progression of heart and arterial disease. So quitting altogether is the ideal goal.
Cost & Savings
Most Vaping start up kits will run about $60 USD.
Refillable vaporizers are easy to use and usually more cost effective.
As with any electronic device batteries run out, and you should expect to buy replacements every 3-6 months. They run around $10-$15 dollars.
10ml of eliquid costs anywhere from $5-$10, and is the equivalent of a carton of cigarettes. Do the math on that! In the US, a pack of cigarettes ranges from $4.50 to 6.00 or more, depending on your brand and taxes.
You could be spending around $10 a month, as opposed to $50 or more.
My personal favorite of vaporizers
Vapermate is by far my favorite and preferred choice for electronic cigarettes. They are durable, rechargeable, and have various tank sizes, mouth pieces, batteries, and many other accessories. Most have tanks that require replacing wicks, or using disposable tanks, but they also have a tank that doesn't require any of that. It's simply a piece that connects to a battery, you add a few drops of your favorite ejuice (about 5), get about 15 hits off of it, then have to add a few more drops. It's a little inconvenient but it does not leak, and it provides the best realistic "throat hit", a great option for someone new to this method of using nicotine. Try the Vapermate brand and you will be a non-tobacco smoker in no time!
To Vape or not to Vape Is the Question...
For me, the answer is...YES. Vaping is the answer. I'm not ready to give up nicotine, but I am ready to give up smoking and all the gross things that come along with it!
If you or a loved one is dependent on nicotine, you should really consider making this switch. You'll add years to your life and save money until you can kick the habit entirely.

Robert Howland from Australia on January 18, 2015:
Vaping is a lot better than cigarettes, Vaping is healthier because instead of inhaling close to 4000 chemicals and tar, which are found in cigarettes, you are only inhaling nicotine, flavoring and two other substances that are considered safe to inhale. While vaping is still smoking you can eventually lessen the nicotine intake and hopefully stop smoking all together!
Good luck with quitting!

Vaping is a great alternative, no sick feeling after smoking, no cough, no yellow mucus in the morning along with so many more benefits, i would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to quit smoking but can't go cold turkey.
