Work Out At the Gym Or Home?

When daily trips to the gym aren’t possible or gym memberships seem a little too expensive, home exercise equipment seems like a good choice. However, before buying for new equipment, make sure you did some research, for instance, look for equipment that suits your lifestyle and budget. It is a fact that regular exercising is vital to a healthy lifestyle. And if you have something to work out with at home you can train whenever you want. You do not need to go to the gym wasting time and money.

Make A Routine

Every day, especially in the morning I dedicate an hour and 45 minutes for my work out. One of my favorite things to do is running on a treadmill. Honestly, I never had a treadmill in my life! My husband used to go to the gym a lot, but he stopped going to the gym and start exercising at home instead. I supported his idea of getting exercise equipment so we both can work out at home regularly.

What Do You Want To Achieve?

First and foremost before buying the product, ask yourself "What do I want to achieve"? You should consider what are your goals; do you want to lose weight or do you want to improve your health. If you are a beginner you might want to consider some light exercise such as aerobic exercise with several sets of dumbbells. After that, you can start with cardio-exercise such as running.

For the past few years, I have started working out at home. I began with walking and brisk aerobic exercise then later I started with running on a treadmill. Work out at home is as good as work out at the gym. The equipment may be limited but, it will help you to be better in shape and well. So, how do you want to choose the right equipment for your house?

Here are some tips that you can use for buying work out equipment.

1) Read or Research Customer Reviews

If you planned to buy the equipment online, the first thing you should do is read the reviews or comments from people who have purchased it. Usually, the consumers wrote a review of how the product performs. However, don't put all your trust in the reviews very fast. Be doubtful of the customers' testimonials because their experiences may not be the same. Try to search for more information about the product for example who is the manufacturer, along with terms like complaint or problem occurred. It will help you to make a definitive decision of the product.

2) Find The Right Price

Everything cost you money. It is as simple as that. If you have a budget allocated for the equipment you want to buy that's fine. But, if you don't here's what you can do. Find equipment that advertises easy payment such as "6 months easy payments of $39.99". That's what we did. This way you can plan and figure out what you'll really pay. Also, if you thinking to buy it online don't forget the sales tax and delivery charges. Other than that, find out about the warranties, and if the item is refundable if you decide to send it back.

3) Test Drive The Equipment

Going to the store to buy the equipment may be the best option if you had doubts about the product. For example, you can walk-in to the big-box stores like Walmart, sporting goods stores like Dick's Sporting Goods, and specialty fitness dealers. Walmart has some of the best prices for fitness equipment such as treadmills and weights training. If you visited the store, take a test drive the equipment yourself.

4) Consider The Space You Have

Gym equipment can take a lot of space in your house. Make sure to take some measurements of the place you plan to put your equipment and keep these measurements with you when you are shopping. For example, if you have a small corner in your bedroom, you will need to make sure that the equipment you buy will fit into that space. However, if you are going to be putting your workout equipment in the garage or if you have a large room dedicated to exercise, you will be able to purchase a larger machine.

Here are some items that you should consider to get to your gym house:

  • Puzzle exercise mat
  • A bench work out
  • Weight storage organizer
  • Dumbbells
  • Manual or powered treadmills (best for cardio)
  • Exercise Bikes
  • Stair Steppers

You're most welcome :)

That sounds great, thanks. Both the cross trainer and the rowing machine had to be assembled, which was quite a task.

First of all, this treadmill comes ready to use straight out of the box so, once it's out from the box, you can plug and go.

It doesn't have a remote control but, it has a rotate handlebar.

It features three stepping zones; slow, normal, and fast — that sense whether you’re walking or jogging. If you move toward the front of the machine it speeds up. If you stay in the middle of the belt it maintains a consistent speed. If you slide toward the back it slows down. It has a digital clock on the bottom front where you can check how many steps, minutes and miles.

I never used the rowing machine, but for now, I am happy with the treadmill and the dumbbells for the muscle work out.

I was interested in your treadmill, as all the ones I have seen have a bar around them with the controls much higher up. How do you set yours? Do you have a remote control?

The rowing machine is good. It is a cheaper version so there's no chain. It has a compression cylinder instead. The disadvantage is that when it's cold in the winter it can be stiff to start off, but it soon loosens up.

Hi Liz,

Aah, I wish you have had too! At least, we have a similarity by working out at home. In the beginning, I was thinking to use the garage as a work out space for us but, we have an extra room, so we transformed into a work out room.

Contrast to your story, my husband bought the treadmill as my birthday present, of course, I let him use it as well :) But, I like the treadmill a lot. I used to have a hard time to run on the ground, so having the treadmill changes the way how I work out.

Thanks for your compliment, Liz. I used to dedicated 30 minutes a day but, later I decided to work out more to achieve my daily target. Did you like the rowing machine?

I wish I had read your article before I set out on an exercise journey at home. Space was short, so I suggested that we buy my husband a combined cross trainer and exercise bike. It has been the best present I was never given. My husband used it once. I use it daily. Later the kids got me a rowing machine. Both are installed in the garage. I am impressed by your hour and 45 minutes. I do 30 minutes each morning.
