Time for Modi to Go:failed on the Wuhan Virus Front as Second Wave Swamps India

Narendra Modi came to power in the 2014 general action, winning an absolute majority. He won 282 seats in the house of 542. He followed up in the 2019 election by getting a bigger majority(303 seats) and people were of the view that it was good for the country. Unfortunately for Modi, the Chinese had formulated a plan to spread the virus in the western world with the aim to make China the predominant power by displacing the USA.

The plan was a success and the western democracies were swamped by what Donald Trump called the 'China virus 'and in America alone, nearly 600,000 people died. The initial spread of the virus in India was muted and the Modi government did not have much problem in combating it. There were deaths and cases but nowhere in comparison or magnitude to the deaths and spread of the virus in the western democracies.

By the end of last year, the Modi government had become complacent and so much so, it relaxed its guard. It also began to gift the virus serum to some countries including Pakistan to earn a good name. This was an extremely shortsighted approach because many experts warned the Modi government that the virus could come back and then it would be a different ball game altogether.

The Modi government however showed lack of foresight and in January 2021 announced victory over the virus and 15 days later the health minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan announced the battle against the virus has been won.

Despite many experts warning the Modi government to be vigilant, Modi thought that the worst is over and they began to open up the country. At the same time, the urgency to vaccinate the population was not there. This easy-going approach and lack of anticipation and listening to the experts were bound to have a repercussion and just within a month of the health minister's announcement India is now facing the greatest crisis of its existence.

The second wave of the virus has engulfed India and more than 300,000 people have died. It is small consolation that more have died in the United States because here the death toll keeps rising up. In addition, there are over 300,000 cases of the China virus every day and that's a phenomenal figure. The Modi government having made no contingent planning and no back up measures has led the Indian state into the center of a storm.

The virus second wave

The situation all over the country is extremely precarious. The government had not set the plan rolling to vaccinate the entire population and on top of it, millions of doses of the vaccine were gifted to other countries; this logic is not understood as the Modi government should have realized that the vaccine would be needed in India.

The situation now is that the vaccine is in short supply in the country and the government has to appeal to Russia and other countries to help out by sending extra doses of the vaccine. Earlier the Modi government had taken a decision not to import any foreign vaccine smug in the belief that India is a self-reliant country. This was an idea far from reality and now the Indian government has given the license to all manufacturers to send their vaccines to India and Russia has responded by sending millions of doses of the Sputnik V. Many countries including the US are helping out.

The hospitals are now shut and beds are not available for the Covid patients. There is a shortage of oxygen cylinders with the results thousands have died from lack of oxygen. I wonder if Narendra Modi is affected by them he is a man who never had a family and at a young age left his wife.

There are tales of pregnant women in the seventh and eighth month succumbing to the virus for lack of oxygen and on top of it the Modi government declared victory and allowed all sorts of religious gatherings to take place. The worst of these is the decision of the Modi government to allow the Kumbh Mela in Hardwar and two million Indians turned out for bathing in the sacred Ganga. This is something that should never have been allowed but as the health minister had announced victory over the virus this was permitted.

Modi also failed to come down on various agitation which was taking place like the Farmer's agitation which was blocking all the roads to Delhi, when the army or the police should've been called to disperse these agitators. He was treating all of them with kid gloves and one really wonders what his game was.

In the last two months evidence has come out and the Central Beaure of Investigation on a direction from the Bombay High Court has been investigating the extortion racket that involved billions of dollars which the government itself is doing in Maharashtra. The Modi government has been sleeping over it and concentrating on fighting the Bengal election. This election should've either been postponed or all the public addresses and meetings should've been banned. The government did not do this and mass meetings with thousands of participants have taken India to the brink of the precipice of no return.

The Modi government has now woken up and realized its mistake but at the same time there is no admission of guilt and this is very sad.

India is now in the middle of the backlash of the virus. The vaccine is in short supply and so are the oxygen cylinders and hospital beds are not available. Cremation grounds are full and there is a waiting list to get your dear one cremated. Similarly in the graveyards, no graves for the new incumbents are available. Such is the magnitude of the problem because one should not forget that India is a country of 1.3 billion people.

I wonder why Modi could not take a leaf out of the book of China which also had a population of 1.4 billion and has controlled the virus. China is a dictatorship but sometimes an emergency is the need of the hour and there is a provision in Indian Constitution to authorize an emergency which Modi should have done. Why he and his government have been sitting on their haunches is something not understood. The daily death toll is into thousands and hundreds of thousands are being infected every day and the Modi government has now woken up but then I wonder why he behaved like Rip Van Winkle and went to sleep and when he woke up he found time had passed by.

There is hope for the country still because India is a resilient nation and now the people are aware of the gravity of the problem they're facing. Help is also coming but the fact remains that the Indian image of world power is greatly tarnished.

A man must accept responsibility and it would be in the best interest of the nation if Mr. Modi realizes the gravity and steps down. There are enough good men in the BJP to lead the country forward among them being Yogi Adityanand, the BJP leader from UP who has done a very good job.

Whatever happens in the future will be for the good but what has happened cannot be erased and forever will haunt the BJP leadership of the hundreds of thousands of innocent people who died because of lack of medical care, oxygen, and hospital beds and the short-sighted policy of the government of not laying stress on vaccination.

Thanks, Tom, this may be worse than the Black pig and it's about time the government did something.

The situation in India is quite dire, and I am praying that the country can emerge from this and grow stronger. The Modi government have obviously made grave mistakes and errors in judgement. Thank you for sharing, MG.

MG Singh emge (author) from Singapore on May 02, 2021:

R Mehra, Thank you. India is facing a grave crisis but whatever happens, a change of leadership would be a good thing.

R Mehra on May 02, 2021:

Somebody had to catch the bull by the horns and I'm glad sir you have done it. There is no doubt that India is facing a great crisis and Modi is responsible for it, how long can people keep hiding the Muck under the carpet. I agree it would be in the best interest of the nation if Mr. Modi called it a day and like a good man goes into the Himalayas to meditate and leave the government to other people. Near my house, a 35-year-old pregnant lady in the eighth month passed away for lack of oxygen. Who is responsible for all this? On top of it despite his great efforts, he has lost the Bengal election.
