The Mystery of Alternative and Natural Medicines

Umesh is a freelance writer contributing his creative writings on varied subjects in various knowledge and educational sites in internet.

Introduction

There are various types of medical systems or curing techniques in the world in practice like Allopathy, Homeopathy, Ayurveda, Naturopathy, Acupuncture, Unani etc. Some of these systems are based on scientific knowledge and research while others are based on the observations by human races in ancient times for a long period and based on the statistics of the results they were adopted in practice. Some of them are able to cure some of the ailments while the modern allopathic system claims of treating most of the ailments.

In this article, we will see their relative merits as well as try to understand why some of the systems are seen with doubts as against their claimed effectivenesses.

Modern Medicines

With the advancement of medical sciences, effective medicines were invented with sustained research and are being used worldwide for curing the various ailments. With time, new research comes up and in this process, some old formulations are replaced by the new one. On the whole, the system of modern medicines (Allopathy) is quite successful and its track record of treating the patients is very glorious.

As medical science is based on purely scientific studies there is supposed to be no room for subjectivity. Medical tests are conducted with the help of sophisticated equipment and diagnosis is finalized before treatment.

On surgical front, modern medical science is very much advanced and doctors are performing very advanced surgery and giving a new life to the patients. Surgery requires precision and many good surgeons work like a good craftsman. They cut, remove, join, and do many more things to the body in remarkable ways. Whether it is a simple tumour removal or heart by pass surgery, they do it with same dextricity. Their expertise in the field of surgery gives them second rank of prestige snd honour after God in this universe and the patients blindly believe in them.

I remember during my wife's colostomy closure operation the first attempt failed and the surgeon came to me and told that we have to wait for some time may be a month or so before the next attempt is to be done. After one and half month they again tried and it was successful and they were happy on their success and I saw as how much satisfied and happy the surgeon was looking. So it is their job and they would definitely take credit for good jobs and that is the main motivation for them apart from the money they get for these surgical operations.

In spite of so much achieved, the medical sciences are still in the continuously developing phase and treatment of ailment like most of the cancer forms is yet to be found. There are many other challenges in medical science and in coming times hopefully some of them would be addressed. In spite of best efforts the cure or vaccine for the ongoing Covid-19 threat is still under research.

There are some ambiguities in the medical tests and for some of the parameters, the range of measurement for good health range is so wide that their ends merge with the parameters of an ill person also. To that extent, the values near the boundary will always be dubious ones. There are many things which have a wide admissible range and these ranges get modified time to time based on the so many medical researches going on. I found a few of them very intriguing. Like vitamin D in our body. The range for vitamin D test (hydroxy vitamin D blood test) is quite wide -

If it is less than 12 ng/mL, then it is considered as vitamin D deficiency. From 12 to 20 ng/mL is simply the overlap between the deficiency and average vitamin D levels. From 20 ng/mL to 50 ng/mL, it is considered adequate for healthy people. From 50 to 100 ng/mL, it is considered on high side. Above 100 ng/mL it is toxic and start harming us in many ways. So the point is that even in modern science there are occasions where we are not able to make out exactly what it means and fall victim to this confusion and uncertainty.

Alternative and Natural Medicines

In olden times people used various natural materials or methods for curing the disease. These primitive methods slowly gained momentum and many people used them and once cured, took them for granted. No one gave much thought to the process of curing of human ailments with these alternative medicines. The scientific background and research work were lacking there.

There are many alternative medicine systems presently in use throughout the globe and most famous are Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Acupuncture, Ayurvedic system of India, Unani system of Greece etc and there may be more which are less famous and limited to a small place or the locale.

These alternative systems were successful in limited cases but most of the times it was the resistance power of the body and its fighting spree with the ailments that worked rather than these alternative medicines or systems of curing. The statistical results of the success ratios of these systems are not available and there is no authenticity in telling that they are effective in certain ailments.

Unfortunately for a layman the alternative medicines or techniques were supposed to be promulgated by great people of their times and questioning their wisdom was a taboo thing. In some cases, those great personalities were even patronised by the king.

Anyway, with the modern sciences providing quick and satisfactory relief for ailments people started to see the alternative medicines and systems with some confusion and doubt. The longtime belief in these alternative systems was so deeply rooted in the minds of people that even the wisest were standing in a doldrums state in understanding those systems.

For example in Homeopathy, which is almost at number one place among all the alternative systems, the dilution of medicine is supposed to increase its strength. In fact for getting a high potency dose, it is diluted so much that only a small amount of the medicine or biochemical whatever it is, would remain there. This is a difficult proposition to digest even for a school going student. I have no intention of dismissing or condemning Homeopathy but the thing is that it is to seen with logic and rationality.

In some of the alternative systems the patient was asked to keep a strict vigil on his food intake, its quantity and its type and he was also told that the corresponding medicines would not work if those precautions were not adhered to. If the person was cured the credit of that will go to the prescribed medicine. Logically speaking, a disciplined diet along with exercise will remove many types of ailments from the body and the supposedly prescribed medicines might not be required.

So in nutshell, though a large population of the world is consuming alternative medicines or undergoing treatments by those methods, their efficacy in a scientific way is not established. Here It is interesting to note that the field of alternative medicines has given an immense business opportunity to many people who are engaged in manufacturing, marketing and selling of these remedial products. So there is a business implication of these for the businessmen and entrepreneurs involved in this field.

For example, as an approximate estimate, the global trade volume of Homeopathic medicines stands at $6500 million per year.

The natural system of curing is based on changing lifestyle and eating habits. The selection of low carb and low-calorie foods for keeping good health is the basic premises of natural curing and in some cases, it has a good success ratio also.

One thing which is to be noted in this context is that if the body is attacked by some outside bacteria and virus and gets infected then natural remedies may not be of help and one has to rush for modern medicines.

Natural medicines

Natural medicines

Body is its own doctor

One interesting observation which medical practitioners often observe is that body is itself very powerful in fighting with diseases and many time it cures it with its immune and resistance and of course it varies from person to person. This property of body is the most amazing thing and can mislead us easily in overestimating the efficacies of some natural and alternative medicines or home remedies. The point is that although the body did it, the credit would go to the remedy undertaken by the patient. That could be the reason behind popularity of some home remedies which are doing a brisk business commercially but are not established or approved scientifically.

In this connection, I would like to cite one personal example that once I had a frozen shoulder on my left and it was a very inconvenient position for me and I was not able to raise my hand even a few inches. Doctors told me that it would take time and gave me some standard allopathic formulations. My friends advised me to go to a Homeopathy doctor and I had gone to one renowned fellow who was surprised to see my awareness about the potency and how these were prepared from the mother tincture. He gave me some medicine and advised one exercise. I casually asked him whether only exercise would not suffice. He gave a deep smile and told me that it is up to me to take the medicine or not but exercise was mandatory. I got the point and did not take that medicine. The frozen shoulder was cured in 20-25 days time.

Conclusion

People having mild ailments or diseases which are cured within a span of few days with modern medicines can be cured in many cases with alternative medicines also and it is no surprise that the body resistance and immune system plays a crucial part in such revivals. On the other hand in serious ailments, one has to in time go under modern medicine treatment failing which the condition of the patient can turn very serious and it will be difficult to revive him.

In remote and interior places in underdeveloped countries, many people just die due to the non-availability of modern medicines in time. Though the usual alternative medicines might be available in the village doctor's drawer but they are of not much use in such cases.

Dream On, you have read the article in such details and taken so much interest. I am overwhelmed with your observations. Thanks a lot. If you are interested I can share some of the home remedies which might work or might not work but would not harm us in any way.

DREAM ON on September 12, 2020:

Your hub is nineteen months old and I think it is a must-read. I love the information you gave and how both methods are important in many ways. You did not push one method or another but referenced them in a very practical and beneficial way. I enjoy your work and this had been a question of mine for many years. You brought it out in the open and blew the lid off what we do and see and believe. I have worked many years doing the same job and I constantly do the same repetitive motion with my arms. I cook and lift fry baskets all day. So after my left arm started causing discomfort and later pain. I went to my doctor he said ofcourse it is going to hurt. You have been doing the same job for thirty years. He gave me exercises and had no real remedy. The exercises would build strength up in the muscles that I didn't work as much to balance the muscles I overworked. It made sense. After traction and physical therapy, I felt better. It was not long after the problems came back. The doctor said you have arthritis that is causing you pain. There is no cure. Unless you change professions you will continue to have trouble. The doctor did not recommend any homeopathy remedies. After overhearing a friend talk about the benefits of ginger.Even though I am not a spice person I began taking it every day. I easily get car sick and I hoped this would help. Well, three months I get less naseaus and I notice less pain in my shoulder and arm. So I continued on taking ginger. The better I feel. I also had seasonal allergies that would give me some trouble. After going to the doctor they recommended Claritin to help clear your sinuses. It works but I did not like the expense and the idea of always taking medicine. A friend in work told me his mother takes a teaspoon of honey and it works for her allergies. Now I have been doing the same and recommend it to everyone. I get a mild sniffle where my eyes would tear so bad and the sneezing wouldn't stop I had to go in the house. Now I can play out in the yard all day. Keep writing and keep sharing. This is a wonderful world that we live in. I love old remedies. I still believe in the good old doctor when things get rough. I am blessed. Over my whole life, I have only needed the doctor a small number of times. I could count them on both hands. Thank you so much for caring. Your article makes a difference.

A very good & informative article. "Survival of fittest " is the principle which applies on each & every system including the medicinal systems. Allopathy is continuously evolving because it's far better than the other systems.

Nice article. I am always interested in alternative medicines because I believe our body will benefit more from it. Although we lack space, we always try to plant medicinal plants like oregano for cough, serpentina for diabetes, moringa for the blood, etc.

Umesh Chandra Bhatt (author) from Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, India on December 21, 2019:

Eric Dierker, you are right. It makes sense not to use the medicines too soon. Sometimes body itself fights and a small natural supplement from outside does a miracle. So the judgement of the physician matters much and if he is not a greedy person he can save us from incurring unnecessary expenditures also.

Eric Dierker from Spring Valley, CA. U.S.A. on December 21, 2019:

I have a great American, General Practitioner. In the five years of friendship he only prescribes over the counter cures. Mostly just adjusting diet.

Even issues with oncology can be adjusted by life styles and food. My son's Godmother is awesome at it. She makes cures tasty and fun. From Vietnam.

Umesh Chandra Bhatt (author) from Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, India on December 16, 2019:

Luis, my experience in this regard is limited but still, I feel that when ailments are in their initial stage then only these medicines could be effective otherwise we have to take shelter under the umbrella of modern medicine.

Marlene, thanks for your comments. Alternative medicines have important role in avoiding the ailments which means that they are preventive rather than curative. For example in the beginning of the sore throat condition, hot water can help or saline water gargling can help but it will not cure the bad sore throat later in advanced conditions. We have to use trial and error method only.

Marlene Bertrand from USA on December 12, 2019:

If I have a choice, I prefer alternative medicines. I only wish traditional doctors would study alternative medicines more. Currently, I depend on my own research, which may or may not be thorough enough for the ailment I want to use it for.

Alternative medicine intrigues me, especially the use of herbs and plants.

Umesh Chandra Bhatt (author) from Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, India on December 04, 2019:

Alan, you have touched some subtle areas and I will like to give one personal example. I had a frozen shoulder about 12 years back and I was advised to see a homeopathic doctor. He prescribed me some medicines plus a few exercises. Being a curious and rational person I asked him in a polite way whether exercise alone will not suffice. He simply laughed and said that it was my option but only exercise will also cure it. I learned a big lesson that day about the effectiveness of homeopathic medicines.

Anyway, thanks for showing interest in my work.

Alan R Lancaster from Forest Gate, London E7, U K (ex-pat Yorkshire) on December 03, 2019:

Well Umesh, this is your castle. Until recently many doctors - even those qualified after five years of college study - still knew precious little about cancer and other difficult afflictions. We had the earlier physicians, those we now call 'quacks', who believed in bleeding patients with mechanical devices or leeches, or subjecting them to cold baths and other extreme 'cures' to purge everything from headaches to gout. Many middle-aged aristocrats drank too much Madeira or Port wine, the sugary richness amassing in their blood-streams resulting in swellings etc of the leg and thickening of the arteries. They'd send for their 'quacks' and be purged, one way or another, or be measured for their 'wooden overcoats' (coffins/caskets).

Things have come a long way in understanding simple ailments such as gout, but the big 'C'? We're still on the starting block with many forms. The 'trigger' mechanisms still elude us.

What's your take on that?

Dora: Thanks for going through my article.

Dora Weithers from The Caribbean on December 03, 2019:

Thank you for this presentation. One of my regrets is not following up on natural remedies which my Caribbean ancestors used. Your article encourages me to document the little I know. Still, we're grateful for the availability and benefit of modern medicine.

Umesh Chandra Bhatt (author) from Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, India on December 02, 2019:

Luis: The point I want to highlight is that the success ratio of alternative medicines like herbs may not be as that of modern medicine and also they are more of preventive in nature than curative. This is only my experience and view. Research will bring more clarity in these assumptions in future.

Luis G Asuncion from City of San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan, Philippines on December 02, 2019:

Yes. Although, there are lots of discovery already in terms of medicine, however, alternative medicines like herbal is my preference.

Umesh Chandra Bhatt (author) from Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, India on December 02, 2019:

Patricia: Thanks for your comments. I think you have a very valid point there and I agree and just mention that whether it is modern medicine or alternative one, we have to go much far to decode the mysteries of curing. All remedies are still in the developing phase.

Umesh Chandra Bhatt (author) from Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, India on December 02, 2019:

Denise: Thanks for going through my article.

You are very right in your observation. I just want to add that natural remedies are good for health as a preventive measure rather than curative one. They can not be accepted like modern medicines. So, taking natural medicine and remedies is a life style management and is preventive rather than curative. The effect of the alternative medicines will not be same in all the patients as they are dependent on the immune system and other factors also.

Alternative meds often do the job and do it well. Modern medicine does not have all the answers. I was told once by a well respected doctor that the practice of medicine is about 95 per cent surmising or guessing if you will. Gather as much information and decide it looks like this or that. Thank you for sharing. Angels are headed to your little corner of the world ps

Very interesting. I think what you are saying is that the best medicine is a good diet and healthy exercise, especially when modern medicines are not readily available.

Yes, modern medicines are life-savers for many. What we sometimes call the 'old wives' tales' are in fact based on tried and tested cases over the centuries but usually for milder conditions. For example, herbs can be efficacious for all sorts of things. However, it's always wise to ask for modern medical help when in dire straits and serious pain.

An interesting and thought-provoking article.

You are very right that a true scientific investigation and monitoring of the patients under treatment with the alternative medicines is the need of the hour and then only their efficacy will be ascertained.

This requires amalgamation of these alternative medicine knowledge with the traditional medicine and surgery courses. Ascertaining the effectiveness of the alternative medicines in a medical college and research institute can only give some more understanding in the matter and the drug controlling agencies in the world should pass these drugs as per their proved effectiveness.

Unfortunately this is not happening either at national or international level and use of these medicines more and less remain as a matter of faith.

Allopathic treatment is symptom-based and does not address the cause of illness in most cases while alternative systems of medicine tackle these conditions in various ways from fasting to diet to change in lifestyle to taking natural remedies and more.

Medicine is big business today and the reason those associated with it, in any way, do not support the traditional alternative medicine system.

Modern medicine is a boon in emergencies but complementary medicine systems do have their value. Striking the right balance between the old and new should be the aim.

It is very true that natural and other alternative medicines work only up to a certain limit till where the immune system of body is in good condition.

So in adverse situations the modern medicines can not be ignored and we have to take them. There is no other way. I will even take liberty to say that alternative system of medicines or methods is basically for maintaining a healthy body so that it does not fall ill. Its curing potential is not as much as people think.

Thanks for reviewing my article. I am a beginner here so I feel encouraged.
