Vitamin D Deficiency Pandemic (widespread epidemic)

If you are an American, what are your odds of having a vitamin D deficiency that can cause many problems? It is over 3 out of 4 or 77% according to the study done by JAMA (the Journal of the American Medical Association).

They have an article called Demographic Differences and Trends of Vitamin D Insufficiency in the US Population, 1988-2004. NHANES is the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. It says:

The current analysis describes a much higher prevalence (77% during NHANES 2001-2004) of vitamin D insufficiency in the US population than previously reported.

In addition, NHANES preferentially avoided sampling in northern latitudes during the winter; thus, the true prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency in the US population is likely even higher than we have reported.

Michael F. Holick Ph.D., M.D. says that there is a vitamin D deficiency pandemic. A pandemic is a widespread epidemic. He says that the main signs of a vitamin D deficiency are pain in your muscles or joints.

Dr. Holick is a Professor of Medicine, Physiology and Biophysics at Boston University School of Medicine. He is also an endocrinologist and was a dermatologist.

Dr. Holick has more psoriasis patients than any other doctor. He wrote The Vitamin D Solution: A 3-Step Strategy to Cure Our Most Common Health Problems. Boston University said about his accomplishments:

Increased awareness in the pediatric and medical communities regarding vitamin D deficiency pandemic, and its role in causing not only metabolic bone disease, and osteoporosis in adults, but increasing risk of children and adults developing common deadly cancers, autoimmune diseases, including type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis and heart disease.

Recipient of numerous awards and honors, including the American Skin Associations Psoriasis Research Achievement Award, the American College of Nutrition Award, the Robert H Herman Memorial Award in Clinical Nutrition from the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, the Annual General Clinical Research Centers Program Award for Excellence in Clinical Research and the Linus Pauling Functional Medicine Award from the Institute for Functional Medicine.

He is considered the country's leading expert on vitamin D. He treats humans and zoo animals with vitamin D.

If you do a search you will find even more health problems that studies show that it helps like depression, sleeping problems, circulation (preventing heart attacks and strokes), type 1 diabetes and autism. Many people blame toxins for autism and cancer. One of the functions of vitamin D is to help the body to get rid of toxins.

Is it funny that millions of people are dying from this pandemic? The cause of this pandemic is ignorance. The root word of ignorance is ignore. PubMed is part of the U.S. National Library of Medicine. They say that vitamin D is actually a neurosteroid hormone. You can easily look this up if you do not believe me.

PubMed Central (like PubMed) is also part of the U.S. National Library of Medicine. They have an article called The Vitamin D Deficiency Pandemic and Consequences for Nonskeletal Health: Mechanisms of Action. It says:

Over the past two decades, it is now recognized that vitamin D not only is important for calcium metabolism and maintenance of bone health throughout life, but also plays an important role in reducing risk of many chronic diseases including type I diabetes, multiple sclerosis [MS], rheumatoid arthritis, deadly cancers, heart disease and infectious diseases. How vitamin D is able to play such an important role in health is based on observation that all tissues and cells in the body have a vitamin D receptor, and, thus, respond to its active form 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D.

Most humans throughout evolution have depended on the sun for their vitamin D requirement. (Holick, 2007; Holick, 2003) When the skin is exposed to sunlight, the ultraviolet B radiation (UVB; 290-315 nm) is absorbed by 7-dehydrocholesterol in the epidermis and dermis and is converted to previtamin D3.

[Under Conclusion] There is a great need globally to make health care professionals and regulatory agencies responsible for the overall health and welfare of their populations to be aware of the vitamin D deficiency pandemic and insidious consequences for non-skeletal health.

Food is not a good source of vitamin D but adequate sunlight and supplements are. You cannot get too much vitamin D from sunlight since the body makes pre-vitamin D and only converts it to the active form as it is needed. So many people would be healthier if they lived closer to the equator where sunlight is brighter. Originally all humans lived in Africa.

People can get too much vitamin D from supplements but it is rare since the Mayo Clinic has tested it and found that if you take 70,000 IUs a day of vitamin D for months, not days, you will get too much. You can easily look up what I am saying by doing a Google search. One IU of vitamin D is the biological equivalent of 0.025 mcg. So even though 70,000 IU of vitamin D sounds like a lot, it is actually only 1.75 milligrams (less than 2 mg).

What are the results of more than 77% of Americans having a vitamin D deficiency? Moores Cancer Center proposes that cancer is actually a vitamin D deficiency. Doctor of Public Health, Cedric Garland, says that ENOUGH vitamin D (lifeguard levels) would virtually eradicate breast cancer.

Harvard School of Public Medicine has an article called Vitamin D Deficiency: A Global Concern. It says:

Worldwide, an estimated 1 billion people have inadequate levels of vitamin D in their blood, and deficiencies can be found in all ethnicities and age groups.

Why are these widespread vitamin D deficiencies of such great concern? Because research conducted over the past decade suggests that vitamin D plays a much broader disease-fighting role than once thought.

Being “D-ficient” may increase the risk of a host of chronic diseases, such as osteoporosis, heart disease, some cancers, and multiple sclerosis, as well as infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and even the seasonal flu.

The heart is basically a large muscle, and like skeletal muscle, it has receptors for vitamin D.

This deficiency is caused by living far from the equator, not getting outside enough during the right time (around noon) and sunscreen. If you have not figured it out yet, sunscreen is a drug to give to healthy people like vaccines (see videos below). Medicine is not a calling from God to join a religion. It is a business to make money. Before Dr. Holick wrote his book on vitamin D, he wrote a book on the benefits of ultraviolet light, called The UV Advantage. That is when he was fired from the dermatology department at Boston U. After that he got more psoriasis patients than any doctor in the world.

If you look at my articles on this website I have many on vitamin D and sunlight. The UV-B light (UV- ultraviolet) that is needed to manufacture vitamin D is strongest around noon. The UV-A light is strong during the whole day. The UV-A light causes your body to produce nitric oxide that widens the arteries making circulation better.

Practically all of the skin cancer that is dangerous is melanoma. If you look on my article on Why the Highest Paid Model Does Not Use Sunscreen (link in article), it has a graph on it.

The graph shows that states closest to equator (where sunlight is brightest) have the lowest rates of melanoma. States that are furthest from equator that are north of parts of Canada have highest rates of melanoma.

I can't agree enough about how important Vitamin D is for us and how most of us are deficient. I'm on the Vit D supplement that you show above. Not only is Vitamin D lowered because of lack of sun, it can also be associated with trauma in childhood which I had. I've been on it for years to help with depression and all preventative measures. Great job on this article. Having said that, I do believe that too much sun can be dangerous for skin cancers.
