The Secret Chinese Fortune That Brightened My Day: A Lifetime of Happiness Lies Ahead of You

My favorite weekday is Friday. I like to get an early start on Fridays, completing work tasks early, and thinking ahead to the weekend. I think this is mind game, but none the less, it does keep me motivated and focused throughout the day.

One Friday morning last Autumn, I started out by preparing a light breakfast which included a cup of decaf tea, a sliced apple, and a poppyseed bagel. After a quick breakfast break, I was ready to start the day. With it being Friday, I tried to think ahead, about things to do on the weekend. I tried not to think of events from the past, including things that didn't go my way this week. I made a list of all the things I had to accomplish that day. It was quite a list. I thought to myself, how can I get this all done.

I opened the wooden blinds in my office, as the sun started peaking through the clouds and into the room. The colors of autumn created a beautiful landscape outside. From my office, I saw the beautiful blue sky and the leaves falling on the trees, showing the many colors of Fall. I glanced outside periodically as I started planning my day, enjoying the scenery.

I reached into my handbag to grab my cell phone which needed to be charged. As I open the phone case, I noticed something was was a folded, worn, small rectangular piece of paper. Then I recognized the shape. It was the little piece of paper with a chinese fortune that comes inside a fortune cookie. Sometimes I would save special fortunes, but this time, I wasn't sure which one this could be. As I unfolded the paper, I was anxious to read the fortune. I always loved reading fortunes from fortune cookies...I always found it fun. The paper read "A lifetime of happiness lies ahead of you." What a wonderful fortune, I thought. I smiled ear to ear and looked outside again. Tears filled my eyes. Why am I crying? These are tears of gratitude of what is to come. They are also tears from left over feelings from the week, maybe from feelings of sadness, anger or frustration, for things that didn't go as planned, work deadlines, acting like super-mom, and seeing unhappy things on the news which may have built up over time. As I wiped my tears and gazed out the window, I looked up into the sky and thanked God for what has just happened. I placed the fortune on my magnetic planning border and adhered it with a magnet.

I thought of sayings like "Today is the first day of the rest of my life", or "Happiness is doing what you love". I glanced at other papers I have pinned up on the corkboard section of my planning board. Here is another quote that I posted on my bulletin board:

"Courage is the power to let go of the familiar."

by Raymond Lindquist

In conclusion, here are little things you can do to brighten your day!

Thanks for your comment, DIYmommy. I love the fortunes too and I tend to save my favorite ones and take them to bulletin board...or in some cases I might put them in my handbag if I am at out at a Chinese restaurant. Then later when you find them and read them again it is a fun surprise and a reminder of the good fortune!

I love the fortunes inside fortune cookies. I'm not sure if you use Facebook much, but, lately, some of my friends have been posting pictures of the 'fortunes' that particularly resonate with them, as yours did for you. Thank you for the great hub!
