Erectile Dysfunction: Cause and Cure
The Canary In The Mine
It is a common belief that the older men become the less virile as they age. This is not completely true, even young men can have erectile dysfunction problems. What is far more important than age, is how much plaque we have in our blood veins.
Erectile dysfunction is a big problem for many men and if you go on the internet you will find there are many ‘cures’ to it. The most well-known is Viagra but there are many other things people also use, like consuming cider vinegar, ginseng, l-arginine, beetroot or grape seed extract. It is true that all these remedies will help to some degree, but none of them will address the root cause of the problem. This is because; the cure for loss of libido is not about what foods or drugs we could take, but more about what we shouldn’t be eating.
Loss of libido is like a canary in a mine. In the old days, miners took these birds underground with them as toxic gas detectors. This was because canaries are far more sensitive to poisonous gases than humans. So if the miners observed the bird dying, they knew there was a build up of dangerous gases in the mine. The same is true of erectile dysfunction. The loss of libido is like a dead canary, because it is a precursor of an underlining health problem that could in time, be fatal.
This is what the NHS (National Health Service) of Britain said about this on their web-site.-
See your GP if you have erectile dysfunction for more than a few weeks. They will assess your general state of health because the condition can be the first sign of more serious health conditions, such as heart disease (when the heart’s blood supply is blocked or interrupted).
The way a man gets an erection, is when the body pumps blood into the penis and makes it larger and harder. So the only reason why a man cannot get a full erection is because the blood vessels are partly blocked and the body can no longer force enough blood into the penis, to make it firm.
Though, it seems that women can have the same problem. A woman’s sexual organs also need blood pushed into it, for it to work properly. So this can be a problem for both sexes. This means that if a woman has a loss of libido, it is also a warning sign of a worse health problem.
So, sexual problems for both sexes are cardiovascular disease, which is caused by a build-up of fatty deposits (plaque) in the arteries that restricts blood supply to the penis. Yet there is a simple solution to this and that is to stop eating fat. This means all types of fat including animal fats, dairy products, eggs, margarine and vegetable oils. Unfortunately, many of the cures for this problem don’t address this and focus instead on boosting nitric-oxide gas production in the body.
The reason why nitric-oxide is so important for the health of our cardiovascular system is because it will not only dilate our blood vessels but acts as a lubricant, allowing the blood to flow easy throughout the body.
Foods that can do this are - celery, spinach, beets, carrots, lettuce, parsley, radishes, cabbage, collard greens, garlic, water melon and grapes. You can also add to this list the amino acids like l-arginine and l-citrulline, vitamins B,C,D and drugs like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. But we don’t have to do this, because the body can produce its own nitric-oxide, if we have a healthy cardiovascular system.
The body makes it own nitric-oxide through the endothelial cells that line every blood vessel in the body. But, if there is too much plaque in our arteries, the fat clings to the blood vessel walls covering the endothelial cells and preventing them from making this gas. This is why men with clog arteries, have to find alternative methods of making nitric-oxide to get an erection.
Yet doing this, will never address the underlining cause of this problem. The only way we can get rid of the fat that blocks the body’s ability to make nitric-oxide, is to not eat any fat or oil. One big objection many people will have to this, is if they cannot eat fat or oil what can they eat? The simple answer is that they can eat fruits, vegetables and grains.
Unfortunately, we now live in a world of convenience and fast foods, which are high in fat, refined sugars and salt. It seems we are programmed to like very high caloric cuisine and fat has more than twice the calories than any other type of food.
Why Do We Eat Fat?
It seems that back in the Stone-Age while we were still hunter/gatherers, food was scarce at certain times of the year. For this reason, people then would always search for the highest calorific food they could find, because they didn't know when they would next get a decent meal. So they would always prefer anything with fat in it as it would sustain them for a longer period of time.
Fat was then in short supply because nearly any animals that were hunted would be very fit and lean, with little surplus fat on them, unlike the obese farm animals of today. Nuts are another source of fat, but would only be available at certain times of the year. Other sourced of fat then would be shellfish, (if people lived near the seashore), and bird’s eggs. So people then were rarely in danger of having too much fat in their diet, as most of their food would be fruits, leaves and root vegetables. This is not the case today.
We still have the instinct to crave for the highest calorific foods, in a world where fat is now freely available. This is because with modern technology and farming methods, we have discovered ways to create an abundance of fat. We have done this through breeding cows that create large amounts of milk, and breeding overweight farm animals for slaughter. Factory farming has created cheap poultry, eggs and pork. We also have large amounts of cheap vegetable fats and oils.
The problems of a diet too high in fats and oils are that it not only causes erectile dysfunction, but diseases like heart problems, strokes, diabetes, high blood pressure, dementia, osteoporosis and even cancer. All these diseases are caused by the damaging effects of too much fat clogging up our blood vessels, depriving many of our vital organs of oxygen and nutrients. For instance, the brain is fed by hundreds of tiny blood vessels and if any get blocked by too much fat in the arteries, then the parts of the brain these blood vessels are feeding, die, causing dementia or even multiple sclerosis.
The Low-Fat Diet
So if we want to cut fat out of our diet, how do we do this? It can be hard because food producers know that people like the taste of fat and put it in almost everything they sell. But we don’t have to eat processed foods, as there are plenty of foods available that are not high in fat.
You can buy low-fat foods in supermarkets and these can be a help, but even with a low-fat options you can still end up with a lot of fat in your diet. If you have erectile dysfunction or any other cardiovascular disease, then you need to try to stop eating fat as much as possible and not just eat less of it.
Now, some people claim that we need fat and talk about good fats and bad fats. But if you have any cardiovascular disease like erectile dysfunction, then any fat you eat is not good for you. It is claimed that oils like, olive oil, rapeseed (canola) oil, coconut oil or fish oil are good for us, but the truth is, that although they might be better for us, than the trans-fats you find in dairy products, margarine or lard, they will still clog up our arteries. Even expensive extra virgin, cold-pressed olive oil, can still end up as plaque in our blood vessels. It is best to eat olives whole, with the fibre still intact.
Vegetable oils are also called, “vegan killers”. The reason is that many people who become vegans have the mistaken belief, that by being a vegan they are immune from all cardiovascular diseases. But you can be a vegan and still have a junk-food diet. So any vegan who eats processed foods high in vegetable oils, margarine and refined sugars, can end up having as many heart attacks and strokes, as meat eaters.
You can find vegetable oils in surprising things like breakfast cereals, bread, tinned soups, alternative milks or covering dried fruit and nuts. So it is a good idea to look at the list of ingredients when buying any food from a supermarket, to make sure they don’t have vegetable oils in them. So what foods can we eat?
There are foods that people like to eat that don’t have a lot of fat in them, like potatoes, bread, rice, corn, pasta, spaghetti, beans and fruits. The problem is that people like to add fat to these staple foods. So it’s normal have things like bread, potatoes or pasta with butter, margarine, salad cream, cheese or meats. Whereas, it would be better to have; bread with jam or marmalade, potatoes with vinegar, and pasta or spaghetti with vegetables like sweet corn, peas, tomatoes or spinach.
Baked beans are a popular food but it has tomato sauce with it which had vegetable oil in it. This may not be too big a big problem because beans are very high in fibre. Though, you can buy many other types of beans and just add tomato puree to them which doesn’t have sugar or vegetable oils in it. It is also a good idea to add any sort of leafy green vegetables to your diet as they help increase nitric-oxide in our bodies.
Nuts can be a contentious issue, they are high in fat but also have fibre in them. For this reason they are not so bad for us, as fibre slows down the rate of digestion and will not flood the body with too much fat too quickly. So if you have to eat fat, then nuts are not so bad for us providing you don’t eat too many. The big problem is nut oils like peanut or hazelnut oils where the fibre has been stripped out of it.
Another objection people can have with a very low fat diet is that foods high in fat are also high in protein and people claim that protein is essential to good health. This is an urban myth. Yes we need protein because it has amino acids in it, but there is protein in nearly every type of food we eat. There is no danger of anyone getting a protein deficiency on a normal diet. Food manufacturers have used this myth, to sell their products, but unfortunately high protein foods can be bad for our health.
Again this is what the NHS (National Health Service) of Britain, web-site says about this.-
There is also evidence that, in the long term, consuming too much protein can lead to an increased risk of osteoporosis and can also worsen existing kidney problems. The Department of Health advises adults to avoid consuming more than twice the recommended daily intake of protein.
Refined sugar is another problem. It is not as bad as fats or oils but it’s next on the list. Eating too much refined sugar is not good for our health but is made worse when combined with fat. This is because when we eat sugar with fat, like in biscuits, cake and confectionery, the body will use the sugar first for fuel and store the fat in the body. This is why sugar makes the problem worse, as it prevents the body burning fat as fuel. Sugar should always be eaten with fibre, like you get in whole fruits and vegetables.
Fruit juices and smoothes are not recommended. This is because food blenders and juicers tend to smash up the fibre in fruits and vegetables releasing all the sugars and fats within them. It is always best to eat fruits and vegetables with your teeth as they are not strong enough to destroy fibre, in the same way as a high speed metal blade in a food blender can. Though, smoothes may better for us than a high fat meal, they are not as good as eating whole fruits and vegetables.
It is true that a very low fat diet is not the only way to clear fat out of our blood vessels. It is possible for people to do this by starving themselves or doing vigorous exercise. If they can regularly go without food for a few days then the body has a chance to repair the cardiovascular system and take out some of the plaque in the blood vessels. People now recommend the 5:2 diet where people starve themselves for two days a week. Or the DODO (Day On/Day Off) diet where you eat what you like for one day and the next you don’t eat anything.
So staving yourself a few days a week can help elevate some of the damaging effects of a high-fat diet. You can do the same with exercise and burn away excess fat in the body with vigorous exercise but you would probably have to train like an Olympic athlete to do this. Exercise is very beneficial for our health but even super fit athletes can still die of heart attack on a high fat diet. In the end, it is a lot easier to stop eating any fat.
One of the criticisms of modern medicine is that it tends to treat the symptoms and not the cause of diseases. This is very true with men’s libido problems.
