What is a Triathlon?
A triathlon is a combination of 3 disciplines: swimming, cycling and running. There are a variety of different competitions and distances of which the most common ones are the sprint distance (swim 0.5 miles, bike 12-14 miles, run 3.1 miles), the Olympic distance (swim 1 mile, bike 25 miles, run 6.2 miles) Half Ironman (swim 1.2 miles, bike 56 miles, run 13.1 miles) and Ironman (swim 2.4, bike 112 miles, run 26.2 miles).
Triathlon training will actually help you prevent injuries such as joint problems, tendinitis, fractures, or shinsplints that occur so often when practicing only one sport. Focussing on only one sport will put continuous stress on the same muscle groups and joints, while triathlon training is an extremely varied workout program that distributes the stress over the entire body. Repetitive stress injuries can be avoided. Both cycling and swimming put minimal stress on joings in contrast to running which often leads to knee problems.
1st Discipline: Swimming
Triathlon will strengthen all muscle groups in your body. Swimming strengthens your upper body while cycling and running helps you build lower body strength.
You will start to love your body. You will develop lean muscles, build strength and tone your lower body. Your belly and hip fat will disappear and you will feel younger and sexier than ever before.
2nd Discipline Cycling
An Ideal Weight-Loss Program
You will be able to lose weight training for a triathlon without even realizing it. You won't have to worry at all about what you eat or at least not in such a frantic way like with all diets. Triathlon training will let you burn a ton of fat in every area of your body. The golden rule for losing weight is that you have to burn more calories than you take in. And triathlon training is the best calory-burner that exists. Basically, when you train for a triathlon, you can eat when you are hungry. There is no need to deprive yourself from taking in those dreaded calories. Remember to stick to a healthy and well-balanced diet though that includes lots of vegetables, fruits and pulses.
Triathlon has multiple health benefits. A regular combination of swimming, cycling and running will help you lower your blood pressure, prevent diabetes and overweight, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and even lower the risk of osteoporosis or depression. Triathletes have larger hearts and a heart rate that is 17% below the average heart rate. Consequently, your heart doesn't have to work as hard as the heart of a non-trained individual.
These health benefits will automatically add more years to your life.
3rd Discipline Running
You will feel more energetic when training in the three disciplines at regular intervals. Your training intensity should correspond to your fitness level, however, which is why it is recommendable to follow some kind of training program. The website BeginnerTriathlete supplies you with any kind of workout program from programs for couch potatoes to Full Ironman beginners programs. If you follow a program suitable for you, you will feel your energy soaring. You will be ready for more soon after you have completed your first sprint distance. Triathlons are addictive!
