The Health Benefits of Cloves

Lois has over ten years' experience in the home/herbal remedy field. She seeks to inform her readers and help them to save money.

Native to Indonesia and grown in countries such as India, Vietnam, the Philippines, the East and West Indies, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Madagascar, cloves are a very popular spice throughout all the regions of the world. Cloves come from the flower buds of myrtle bloom. The woody and knobby stems that you use for cooking in baked ham are the flower buds that are dried. They have been in use since the ancient times and, at one time, was considered to be more valuable than gold. Often used in many recipes in Indian cooking, this pungent smelling spice has found its way in many spice dishes. Not only should you use cloves to make a delicious spicy curry for its taste, you should include it because of its many health benefits.

If you have a toothache, put a clove near the aching tooth and the pain will decrease. If your toothache is from an infection, cloves contain antiseptic properties which will help fight that infection. Since the main ingredient in these over-the-counter products is clove oil, you can easily make your own toothache pain-relief preparations and antiseptic mouthwashes.

For toothache pain add a drop of clove oil with three drops each of chamomile and lemon essential oil. Take a washcloth and dampen it with hot water. Add the oil to the cloth. Place the cloth on the side of the face where the toothache is and use it as a compress.

Clove oil is an active ingredient in several mouthwash products and a number of over-the-counter toothache pain-relief preparations. For an effective germ fighting mouthwash, fill a cup with 3 ounces of water and a half of an ounce of vodka. Add one drop of clove oil, and two drops each of thyme and tea tree essential oils. Use this rinse up to twice a day. Be very careful not to swallow the mouthwash.

Cloves contain astringent, anti-septic and anti-bacterial properties. A paste containing ground cloves and water can be applied to the skin to treat conditions such as acne, eczema and psoriasis. Because it has antibacterial properties, cloves can be used to treat cold sores, bee stings, mosquito bites, cuts and scrapes. For an excellent tea, add 2-3 cloves to a tea ball. Allow it to sit in a cup of hot water or your favorite tea for ten to fifteen minutes before drinking.

Cloves contain anti-fungal properties. If you suffer from athlete's foot fill a foot bath with water and add 15 drops of clove oil, 6 drops of lavender oil and 2-4 tablespoons of lemon juice. Not only will this fight the infection, this treatment also fights foot odor.

Cloves contain no sugar. If you are diabetic, you can use cloves for a natural sweet flavoring to teas and deserts. This spice will help you keep your blood sugar at a safe level.

Cloves are not only good for the body, they are also excellent in giving your house a fresh aroma whenever anybody comes to visit. For an effective carpet deordorizer, add 10 ounces of baking soda, 10 drops of clove oil and 20 drops each of lavender and orange oil in a Ziplock bag. Seal the bag and shake. Wait for 24 hours before you sprinkle it on your rugs. Wait at least an hour before you vacuum.

You might be the type of person who uses artificial Christmas tree during the holidays. While more and more people are doing this, the holidays are not the same when you do not have the smell of pine in the house. One way to make your house seem more festive is to collect several pine cones and put them in a bowl. Then add three drops each of clove and cinnamon oil and 8 drops each of tangerine and mandarin oil.

I remember a few years ago I had a toothache but I couldn't make an appointment with the dentist. So I made a tea and put ground cloves in it. The pain went away in no time at all. And it didn't come back. Still went to the dentist and had to get a root canal.
