Introduction To The Topic Of Refined Sugar

You’re probably wondering why I’m going to write about sugar today. First of all, I used to work in the healthcare industry where every day I was exposed to health and medical terms. I also had a father that has ruined his health due to eating a high amount of sugar and fat. And the average American consumes so much sugar every year that it is really staggering. Did you know that one 12 ounce can of Coca Cola contains thirteen teaspoons of sugar? Yes you heard me when I said thirteen teaspoons. And that is just in one soft drink can! To add to this, it seems that the average American is really fascinated with white refined sugar. In fact, even the bread sold in our grocery stores has high fructose corn syrup. Are you alarmed and shocked yet? If not, then keep reading.

Sugar Leads To Weight Gain

The fact is that if you drink large amounts of soft drinks, you will put on ton of weight and destroy your health also. Statistics show that the average American consumes over 600 sodas in a year! (Snyder, 2012). Think about this for a moment. 600 sodas in a year averages to 50 sodas per month. If you do the math that is the number you will end up with. On average in the United States, more than 150 pounds of sugar per person per year is consumed. White, refined sugar is considered to be the worst ingredient in the modern diet today. Sugar really is devoid of any major nutritional value and it can cause our teeth to get bad. I have been blessed with great teeth though.

Sugar Raises The Risk Of Obesity And Feeds Cancer Cells

Another fact about the effects of sugar on the body is that if our liver is loaded with glycogen, this causes the liver to get overloaded and this forces the liver to turn that fructose into fat. And it is saturated fat that causes heart attacks, not the cholesterol as we are led to believe. But also, there are new studies that have emerged that seem to indicate that consuming large amounts of fructose has the ability to raise the levels of triglyceride in the body as well as raising the blood glucose and insulin levels. Fructose can also aid in raising obesity in the abdomen in as little as 10 weeks! And if that’s not scary enough, sugar consumption has been known to lead to development of cancer. Many scientists believe that very elevated levels of insulin has the ability to contribute to cancer. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death and famous people such as Michael Landon and Steve Jobs have died from it. Sugar consumption can also lead to problems with your metabolism which can increase the risk of inflammation and this is another cause of cancer. There are many studies that prove that those who eat lots of refined sugar are at a much higher risk of getting cancer than those who don’t. In short, sugar is a cancer feeder. I wrote earlier about the dangers of unhealthy eating and how unhealthy the average American diet is. Sugar, like fatty foods as you know by now is also very detrimental to our bodies.

The energy drink Red Bull has about 7 teaspoons of sugar. Orange juice has sugar also but that kind of sugar is usually natural sugar. And one Snickers chocolate bar has 14 teaspoons of sugar. And one cinnamon roll from Cinnabon has 14 teaspoons of sugar also in addition to all that saturated fat. It is no wonder why we have so many people in the US with heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer. Sugar is known to be a cancer feeder. In other words, the more sugar that we eat, that sugar produces cancer cells which then invade and attack our bodies. Sugar also hardens the arteries and blood flow is reduced. This reduction in blood flow leads to heart attacks and strokes. It is time to focus on eating healthier food if you want to reduce your chances of having a lifetime of poor health.

A diet high in fruits and green, leafy vegetables is the answer. I know that for some of you it may be hard to change your bad habits. But that change has to start with you. Would you rather have a life filled with lots of healthy and vibrant years? Or would you rather have a life filled with all kinds of health problems and visits to the doctor? If you are reading this then I know that this is not what you want. You want to live a life full of good health. But this path to good health starts with you. I can’t make you become healthy. You have to make the choice that you want to change your dietary habits and eat healthier.

An article written by the Mayo Clinic states that high fructose corn syrup or corn sugar is the most common added sweetener in our processed foods and beverages. In addition to weight gain, the increased consumption of sucrose or high fructose corn syrup can cause problems such as cavities in your teeth, rise in the level of triglyceride levels, and overall poor nutrition. These poor health habits can lead to an increased risk of heart disease, a condition that is estimated to affect more than 80 million people in the US! In addition to this, the average American gets very little exercise; he or she has high blood pressure and in general has a very negative self-image the reasons which are beyond the scope of this article. But do you understand what I’m saying here? By putting all that refined sugar in your body, you are destroying it. You have only one body so take care of it while you are alive. Too much sugar is like poison for our bodies. We must replace white, refined sugar with foods such as vegetables, beans, fruits, lean meat and skinless chicken.
