The Covid-19 Surge Now in Florida

I live in Florida on the Gulf side and in my county the cases are climbing at a rate of 5-7%, if not more. In my specific small town of 20,000, the rate is 1% of the population, so, I was shocked to see the State figures surge to July 2020 daily averages of 6-7,000. I thought we were on the decline given all the vaccinations the Governor has made available to ages groups and the general ease of getting one of the three vaccinations. Not so.

In the last week of March, there were 452,000 new cases across the USA. Between March 30- April 6, Florida had 36,812 new cases according to the CDC. In fact, since mid February 2021, weekly averages for the state hover near 35,000 new cases!

This is shocking and not shocking given the lack of social distancing and ignoring mask regulations during Spring Break and Easter Week, where beaches were packed all over and hotspots remain Miami, Tampa, Jacksonville, Orlando. More disturbing is that the CDC indicates the increase of cases is also due to mutations of the virus. The most common mutation is the UK variant that loves our state with over 3100 cases, or 20% of all UK cases in the USA. The UK strain actually infects kids far more than adults but kids don't show many symptoms. The UK variant is said to infect more easily but is not as dangerous as other mutations and in some cases, the vaccines seem to able to keep it in check.

With California and Florida racing to win the #1 spot for Covid cases, California will fully reopen in May, while Florida has been doing quite some time now except for the shutdown in April 2020. While it may seem like it is game over for Covid, the rising number of cases, the total lockdown in France, Germany, Philippines again should make all continue to mask and keep distance.

I am planning to go on one regardless

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on April 09, 2021:

This is bad news, especially when summer is just around the corner.

We see many celebrations with people not taking precautions.

I doubt if just taking covid vaccine will end this problem.

We need to keep doing our part.

I definitely wanted to go on vacation this year.

For sure, Oklahoma also has many of these people, but the UK variant from what I have read indicate that vaccines seem to work on it, while not so with the others. I guess the question still an unknown is that how effective are they against the UK variant. Either the doom scenario is just around the corner or it is not, depending on what actually happens but the surge in Florida remains stunning and worrisome.

DW Davis from Eastern NC on April 09, 2021:

Are there large groups of anti-vax populations in Florida? This seems to be a growing concern around the country as these groups are incubators for more contagious and deadly forms of the virus against which the vaccine may not be as effective.

Liz Westwood from UK on April 08, 2021:

This is concerning news. I had heard that the approach in Florida is quite relaxed towards social distancing. How is the vaccine programme going? The UK is only just starting to gradually reopen after a lockdown of several months. Non-essential retail reopens next week.

Yes, I just had a friend die from covid complications. however, when the tropics lure you into a false sense of security with warm ocean, palms, warm temps, it is easy to see why so many from the cold climes come and spread it more. It is hard to take serious if you have had no direct impact or bad experience with it.

Maria Giunta from Sydney, Australia on April 08, 2021:

This is awful. Please follow the rules of social distancing and wearing masks if you're able to. COVID is not a joke, people are dying. If we want to be rid of this disease, there is no other way than to follow rules or be prepared for a total lockdown.
