Eating One Meal a Day

I have been eating one meal a day for 40 years. It saves me a few hours a day that it would take to buy, prepare, eat and clean up after the meals. I am not missing out on anything at all. I am not fond of things that I have to do.

The only people who eat more than once a day have nothing to do and all day to do it! It is a bad habit, like having black slaves. The biggest health problem in the world today is the average weight of each person is going up everyday! Soon the average weight will be 300 pounds. WHO says:

There is a lot on the internet about one meal a day. One meal a day is called the acronym OMAD. An acronym is where they make a word from the initials of each word. There are 2 industries that are against this. The food industry wants you too eat as much as possible and weigh as much as possible. It means more business for them. Also the medical industry is a business. This is very good for health. The sicker you are, the more business they get.

Intermittent fasting is fasting for less than 24 hours. After writing this article I found that a medical doctor, Bert Herring M.D., was not eating lunch and had accidentally missed breakfast. He had less appetite and felt better so he kept it up until he lost 20 pounds. Then he got his wife (also an MD) to try it and she lost 30 pounds. See the fast-5 diet for weight loss article. In this you eat whatever you want and as much as you want for 5 hours and then for 19 hours you do not eat anything. He helped a woman lose over 200 pounds with this-- before and after picture on webpage.

In this non-diet diet you eat for 5 hours and do not eat for 19 hours. He researched it a found it to be the most effective and it worked on everyone. He wrote a book on it. During this time he was working at the NCI (National Cancer Institute) trying to find a cure for cancer but did not find one. If you want to avoid cancer or treat it the best way, make sure you are getting enough vitamin D.

I have never been overweight and I have done fasts on only pure water with no minerals as suggested by Joel Fuhrman M.D. for 22 days (see my article on it) and several fasts of 10 days and several fasts of a week. I have also done many fasts less than a week. Also I have not had a cold, flu or headache in 15 years but I also do a meditation taught by Prem Rawat.

When Mahatma Gandhi, who was famous for fasting, died at 78 years old the average lifespan of an Indian was 54 years old. Also he did not die of natural causes. He was shot with a gun and killed. My mother died of natural causes at age 46, but she did smoke. Note that like Dr. Ra, I sweeten all teas with stevia, that is a sweet and from a herb. See Health Benefits of Stevia Herbal Sweetener.

Before writing this I searched the internet to see what I could find. I already knew that Buddha ate one meal a day and it looks the Buddhist monks only eat one meal a day. Although I feel that they should be allowed to choose what they want to do. Here is a webpage about this called Why One Meal a Day. It says:

The Buddha recommended one meal a day for health reasons.

I have been practicing the one-meal a day program for several years and have no problems with it.

Regardless, eating just one complete meal for the day has many benefits when one gets used to it, among them: much less time of the day worrying about food, more time to practice and much, much less sloth & torpor since there isn't the drowsiness after the meal.

Lost 165 Pounds

Many people use this one meal a day to lose weight. This webpage tells about a guy who lost over 100 pounds by doing this. He went from 363 pound to down to 198 pounds (lost 165 pounds). His blood pressure dropped from 152/117 down to 106/67. He says:

The Macedonians, the Greeks and Romans, our hunter-gatherer ancestors, not to mention the followers of Elijah Muhammed, all ate one meal a day.

To whom it may concern, here is how I did it. You should ignore the haters and armchair dietitians out there and give it a try if you have serious trouble with obesity, are a binger [binge eater], a psychological eater, or otherwise struggle with serious resistance to other, more lenient programs.

Some people think that by eating one meal a day my metabolism will slow down and I will be obese. Others think that I will not be able to get enough calories so I am starving to death. Both are right.

One side of my body is emaciated and the other side of my body is obese. Actually if both are happening then they cancel each other out. People do ask me if I get hungry and I say "no." The reasons that people get hungry is when they are full, they feel pain and that makes them stop eating. But when their stomach is no longer full, they stop feeling the pain so they associate that with hunger. I do not feel hungry having an empty stomach.

Note that many of these sayings come from the food industry that wants you to eat a lot of food and eat it often so you can get fat and eat more food. There is a saying "Milk does a body good." Can you guess where that comes from? The milk industry that sells the milk of cows. Breakfast being the most important meal comes from food industry. They have a financial investment in your eating massive amounts of food. If you are obese, the food industry is doing their job. If you are thin, the food industry is doing a bad job. That is why processed food is so fattening.

The information about why you should wear sunscreen comes from the drug companies that sell sunscreen (a drug). They just want you to buy it no matter how bad it is for your health. Psychology Today says that increased rates of depression are caused by sunscreen blocking out much needed vitamin D. So people are actually paying to become depressed.

On the 16 minute video below: Mark Mattson is the current Chief of the Laboratory of Neurosciences at the National Institute on Aging. He is also a professor of Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University. Mattson is one of the foremost researchers in the area of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders.

Here is another webpage I found interesting called The Science of One Meal a Day. It says:

Dr. Mattson believes that eating one meal a day or one meal every other day can actually cut calorie intake by 40 percent. He and other researchers also suggest that such a diet can serve as a protection against diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, as well as against cardiovascular diseases.

A webpage online called The Life has an article about the wisdom of eating 1 meal a day. From the book, The Hygienic System: Orthotrophy by Dr Herbert M. Shelton, originally published in 1935:

Dr. Felix Oswald says that “during the zenith period of Grecian and Roman civilization monogamy was not as firmly established as the rule that a health-loving man should content himself with one meal a day, and never eat till he had leisure to digest, i.e., not till the day’s work was wholly done.

For more than a thousand years the one meal plan was the established rule among the civilized nations inhabiting the coast-lands of the Mediterranean.

The evening repast–call it supper or dinner–was a kind of domestic festival, the reward of the day’s toil, an enjoyment which rich and poor refrained from marring by premature gratifications of their appetites.”

Dr. Herbert Shelton was a doctor of chiropractic and a doctor of naturopathic medicine. He fasted around 40,000 people so he was an expert on fasting. I cannot find the word "orthotrophy" anywhere except as a section of Dr. Shelton's books. So I guess it is a word that he made up.

The Romans believed it was healthier to eat only one meal a day. They were obsessed with digestion and eating more than one meal was considered a form of gluttony.

The medical doctor above, Dr. Herring, has it where you can eat all the food you want during the 5 hours of eating. I eat all the food that I want to. I eat fruit first since it does not digest and passes through the stomach. Joe who coined the word OMAD, created it to lose weight. He used it to lose 173 pounds in 10 months and 27 days. Here is his webpage for doing this to lose weight. It says:

The first 4 days on OMAD will be especially difficult, but your body will adjust in time. You will be hungry and it will be hard to do your usual tasks on an empty stomach, but your re-adjustment to being productive while hungry instead of full is a life-change that must be made.

Here is an experiment that you can do to learn about hunger. Get a little kid to accompany you while you do chores that he will find very boring. Then ask him every 2 hours if he wants to eat. Every time, he will say "yes." Now find an activity that this child really loves doing. Then ask him if he wants to eat, every 2 hours and he will say "no" until the activity is over.

Eating is a very pleasurable activity.

Hypoglycemia is very rare but its symptoms are identical to the body going into a fasting mode from not eating for a while. If I did not eat the next meal after 24 hours sometimes I would have the symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Then I learned about fasting and would fast for 5 days and I would not get those symptoms unless I was fasting over a day. Then I continue fasting and the symptoms go away.

What is the above like? Did you know that smoking cigarettes is good for health? Why because if you stop you will feel terrible. But if you continue not smoking for long enough, those symptoms go away. They are from the body flushing out tobacco toxins at an accelerated rate. When your body goes into a fasting mode, it flushes out toxins at an accelerated rate.

How Do You Know

How do you know when the body is in the fasting or cleansing mode? A woman said that she cannot fast since she has hypoglycemia. She guessed that she had it since if she goes too long without food she gets the symptoms of low blood sugar. So I told her that when your body goes into the fasting mode, the tongue gets coated. So she emailed me saying "You sure know your stuff!" She had gone too long without eating and was feeling very bad. She checked her tongue and it was coated.

So the benefits of eating one meal a day is that it is healthier, can help people to lose excess weight and save you hours a day. People say "Time is money." So how much money is your time worth? The reason that I started eating one meal a day is that I wanted to meditate many hours a day and you are not supposed to meditate for at least an hour after eating. So I would do the meditation first and by the time that I got done it was time for dinner.

Also sleeping is good for health but there is one reason for this that people are not aware of. If someone says that fasting is bad for health, they are saying that sleep is bad for health since you have to fast to sleep. You cannot eat while sleeping. If you sleepwalk that is not sleep. If you skip breakfast then your fast continues. When you stop a fast you "break" a fast, like with breakfast.

He talks about what you eat and the hunger symptoms that people get. To eat healthy foods eat unprocessed foods that were made by God or nature instead of man. Processed foods are made by man. I have fasted for 22 days on only pure water and nothing else and I also have an article on that. I fast for health. I have never had a problem with excess weight.

He has eaten one meal day for 20 years. He started doing this around 18 so he could have more time to do other things.. Notice how muscular that he is. I guess that the average American eats about 10 times the food that he needs. This biggest health problem in the world that is growing is obesity.

An Egyptian Pyramid inscription from about 3800 B.C. said "Humans live on one-quarter of what they eat; on the other three-quarters live their doctors." Mark Twain suggested that fasting was more effective than medicine. He said:

A little starvation, can really do more for than the average sick man than the best medicines and the best doctors.

I saw 2 videos that put down the vegan strongman (Dr. Nun S. Amen Ra) video. I personally do not count calories. They did not make much sense and used profanity (swearing or cursing). I think profanity is profane. Profane is defined as to treat (something sacred) with abuse, irreverence, or contempt or to debase by a wrong, unworthy, or vulgar use.

Profanity is defined as an utterance of profane language or blasphemous or obscene language. People use it when they are angry. When people are angry, they are driven by a strong emotion, not logic and can kill you even if they are the nicest guy. When people are irrate, there is a lot of hate. Watch video with song on it. Irrate is defined as feeling or characterized by great anger. Using profanity is a sign that that person is not in their right mind. Using it against police is not illegal but can get you handcuffed, arrested or killed. Actually even though there is the first amendment, that protects what you say, you can be arrested for disturbing the peace.

I looked him up and saw him on LinkedIn. He has a Doctor of Public Health degree (epidemiology) from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland and teaches science at Baltimore Collegiate School for Boys and he is a Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW). Nun Amen-Ra, Dr.PH, MA, MSW, LGSW.

Daniel, I have fasted for 22 days on pure water. Right now I am on the 8th day of a fast on pure water that I will break tomorrow. When you stop a fast it is called breaking it. Did you that you fast everyday? The first meal of the day is break-- fast but we pronounce it as brek-fist. I have an article that tells that toxemia is the cause of most health problems and the best way to treat is fasting. 2,000 years ago, Jews, like Jesus used fasting as the main medicine and that is why the bible mentions fasting 74 times.

Thanks for sharing. Lately when I work on the computer my eyes get tired. Very annoying. Although when I feel driven to finish a task I'm okay. One day I worked for 10 plus hours with no problem. All I ate, was nuts, sandwiches and quite a few peaches. I know peaches are good for the eyes and think all we really need is to make sure our snacks or meals contain enough vitamins.

It is amazing to read this article. For the last half a year I had issues with how much, what and when to eat. And everytime I was eating in the wrong moment, or too much I would had a really bad psychological reaction. I tried also fasting, and felt greatly, expanded awareness and I experienced calmness and clear thinking.

This Christmas, I was on a trip, in vacation. Since I was away from stress, I decised to eat only when I will feel really hungry. And guess what, I went for one day without being hungry, except some light impulse at lunch and dinner. However the next day I have eaten once, and basically I felt that this is the best way to nourish myself. Now I feel this is the most enjoyable way for my body to eat. As you say, at the end of the day, when work is done, eat as much as I want as a celebration. What is funny, now that I have experienced this, if I eat during the day, I start feeling bad about myself, as if I did something against my will...

Thanks for a super hub. I myself eat one meal a day but have snacks through the day. Believe me in South Africa there are many that would be glad to have one meal a day. If you wait in any public place you are sure to have somebody come up to you for money or if they see you have groceries with you, ask for bread. I give gladly and send my blessings along. I know this is not what your hub is about but thought that those eating one meal a day by choice should count their blessings and give to others less fortunate.

Not many ppl will be able to keep this type of ffast except those who are doing it for the sake of their lord....their driven by the commandments in their religion to do so and who knows you better than the one who created you. We fast for one month from dawn to sunset and eat once and small snack before dawn. And we continue do so on voluntary basis twice a week and this too has been proven by science as a healthy alternative to fight many diseases... I am happy and proud of my religion for every commandment has wisdom and many of which are now being discovered by science and this beautiful religion is Islam.

This is incredible . I think if one adopts this regimen, s/he'll savor more food at a time because of more hunger and feel no hunger for a considerable time thereafter. The appetite will then adapt to the new pattern having no problem.

I once tried to skip lunch for a few days, but then I felt hunger and couldn't continue more, and then reverted back to the old pattern. This is indeed a unique and very interesting hub. Voted up and shared.

As long as the one meal is ingested slowly and enjoyed I can see the benefits. On the other hand, a friend will come in from a day at work famished and just inhales his one meal. Excellent food for thought.
