The Blue Punching Bag

The Tae Bo DVDs I have came with a blue punching bag. I actually got the punching bag because I wanted a punching bag I could have on the floor. It was not a very good punching bag because it was too light. The bottom has water to weigh it down but the blue part is full of air. It moved around too much when I hit it because there was very little resistance. So I did not use it very much. However the bag came with 2 DVDs that contained Tao Bo routines.

After doing some research I learned more about Tae Bo. Since it is supposed to be good for weight loss and provide a good cardio workout I decided to put it to the test. I have lots of exercise experiences to compare it to. To test it I decided to use it 6 days a week and see how effective it was for getting rid of fat. Lots of people have lost weight using Tae Bo and most of the reviews are good. It is used by men and women but mostly women.

First Impressions

I played the first DVD and followed along. One of the first things I learned was that you are supposed to retract your arm or leg when you reach the target instead of following through. When you hit a heavy punching bag the bag stops you. With this bag you need to stop yourself. If you do not stop and retract soon enough the bag moves away from you and messes up your timing.

Timing, speed and control are important. If you remain in control you can keep a good rhythm. Rhythm is a big part of Tae Bo. If you lose control you may need to stop and wait for the bag. The first few times I hit the bag I moved it around too much but I adapted. I can punch hard without moving the bag a lot but it took practice. The routine was easy to follow. There are not any complex movements.

I got a little sweaty doing the exercise routine but I was not drenched in sweat like the people in the video. They probably worked out in a hotter environment. After finishing the routine I was not winded. There was some muscle fatigue but I was not breathing hard and I was not really tired. I could have continued to workout for a while longer. The cool down stretches at the end of the workout were nice. They left me feeling relaxed.

It was interesting and had enough variety to keep me from being bored. I did a vareity of kicks and punches along with some body weight exercises and stretching. The intensity was what I consider moderate and the duration was short. It only lasted 45 minutes. When I do cardio workouts like running or biking I usually exercise for 2 hours. So I consider 45 minutes a short workout. I did not really feel like I burned a lot of calories but I felt like I could use a nap.

The Trade-Off

The problem with following a routine is there is not a lot of room for improvement. Usually I focus on improving my strength or endurance. The routines became a little easier on my body and I improved my form. However I did not have a lot to strive for and I could not keep burning more and more calories. It was not like running where I tried to run as far as possible and made vast improvements.

It was a lot less repetitive than biking or running inside. Biking or running inside is tedious. However I could not do Tae Bo while I watch a TV or movie. So I need to set aside some time to do it. You need to focus on what you are doing. So you can not multitask.

Skip The Punching Bag?

I found it hard to watch the video and look at the punching bag at the same time. It divided my attention. Hearing them helped but I could not see the people in the video a lot of the time. The punching bag takes up space and forces you to exercise near it. That means you need to have a TV in the same room as the punching bag.

The punching bag is good for practicing control. It also helps with your strength and speed. If you hit the bag hard and fast while maintaining control it makes a specific sound. You can hit it hard without causing it to move around a lot. It provides you with some useful feedback but makes it hard to follow the exercise routine. A lot of people dislike the punching bag because they can not hit it hard without messing up the routine and only two of Billy Blanks DVDs use it. His most popular and highest rated exercise routines do not make use of it.

I would recommend you try one of the many Billy Blanks DVDs that do not use the bag. At least try one of them first.

After doing Tae Bo for a week I lost 1 1/16". That is measuring the circumference of my gut. My weight was reduced by nearly 2 pounds. I was expecting it to take a lot longer. So it worked better than I expected it would. Besides reducing fat it was also good for my muscles.

The only way I could really tell that I had lost fat was to weigh and measure myself. Your results will probably not be the same as my results. Everyone is different. So I would recommend you give it at least a few weeks and put some effort into it. Tae Bo offers an effective workout routine for building lean muscles and getting rid of fat.

For best results I would recommend trying one of the more intense Tae Bo workouts. That way you would burn more calories and get in better shape. The DVDs on the right are some of Billy Blanks best Tae Bo workout routines.
