Tips For A Positive Attitude

Linda (Kaywood) Bilyeu is a self-published author. Her books are available on Amazon. She writes from the heart—there is no other way.

Sunshine's Guide to Thinking Positive

I wasn't born a positive thinker. For many years I was a pessimist. Always expecting the worse and hoping for the best. I still think that way at times, but I prefer not to. That way of thinking is exhausting. At some point it starts to become a drag.

Negative thinking can literally weigh you down. To me, it's useless energy being wasted on something that could be more productive.

Along our journey of life we will encounter many ups and downs. Even though events in my life haven't always been good, I still prefer to look on the bright side. In addition, there is always something good in every day. No matter how bad you think your day might have been, there is some one else who had a worse day.

I won't go into details or throw a pity party, because I don't like drowning my tears in sorrow. I am a strong believer in picking myself up, dusting myself off and moving forward.

Don't get me wrong, I do get the blues, I just don't like to stay under the dark clouds for long. Life is too short to remain in a negative mode. I prefer to be in the sunshine.

It Is What It Is

  • Don't sweat the small stuff. Or the big stuff. Something that's pestering you at the moment probably won't be that serious in another day or two.
  • Believe that there are some things that you have no control over. Unless you could truly change a situation it might be best to pass it along to a higher power.
  • Know that there is always, always sunshine after a storm. Also during the storm you have the opportunity to create your own sunshine. Whether it's by listening to music, watching a movie or reading a book. You are in control of your sunshine.
  • Yes, life will throw you lemons. Quite often. It's up to you to decide what to do with them. I personally throw them back.
  • It's OK to fail. The important thing is trying and not giving into your fears. Failure gives you the strength you need to try again.
  • Losing isn't all that bad. If you won all the time how would you truly learn? Go ahead and lose with a smile. Be proud and get better!
  • Quitting isn't in my vocabulary. I am not a quitter. Some days I wish I was, but it's a no go. On those rare occasions when I feel I must "stop" I accept it, but I never call it quitting. So just replace the word quit with stop and be kinder to yourself.
  • When you feel the need to whine or complain, keep in mind that there is always someone who has bigger problems than you. This way of thinking makes you appreciate what you have and might make your problems less catastrophic.
  • When you feel the need to say something negative, allow a five second waiting period before you do. Maybe you might not say it after all.
  • Everyone is fighting a battle of some type, be nice to who ever you meet. You never know how your graciousness could help their situation.
  • Put your trust in karma. When something or someone has entered your positive thinking mode...stop, drop and roll with karma.

Are You Feeling The Positive Vibes Yet?

  • When someone is trying to take away your joy with rudeness, kill them with kindness. Many times I have encountered a person who was in a miserable mood. Most of the time I succeeded in turning their mood around by being kind, instead of allowing them to take me down with them. Give them a compliment. Say something funny. If you don't succeed just wish them luck and be thankful you aren't them.
  • People with a positive attitude don't expect things to happen. They don't sit back with their feet propped up on a desk or their hand folded in their laps. They make things happen. They take control and give it their all.
  • Don't hold on to baggage. I'm not referring to travel baggage. I'm referring to mistakes of the past. You could either choose to accept your errors in life and move on or allow them to consume you. Yesterday is over and done with. You can't undo what's been done. All you can do is learn from your trials and errors.
  • As you continue on your journey, try your best to make every day better than your last. Granted, some days you just might not think you have the energy, but unless you challenge yourself and try, you'll never find out what you could truly accomplish.
  • Don't dwell with guilt. We all have reasons and situations that we dealt with that were troublesome. Some were heartbreaking. Some we never, ever thought we'd recover from. Yet, we did. Those occasions are what has led us to who we are today. They are our memories now. Guilt is a heavy burden to bear. Accept what's happened as what's happened and again, learn from it.
  • Be thankful. For everything and everyone. For waking up in the morning. For having a clean bed to sleep in. Be thankful for food on your table. Be thankful for breathing. Being thankful keeps your positive mojo alive and well.
  • Contrary to what you might think, you are stronger than you think you are. Your attitude might want to take a detour towards anger, resentment or bitterness. Stand tall, be brave and never give in, ever.
  • Be generous to others. Whether with your time, charity work or something as simple as a smile. You have the power to make a difference in someone's life.
  • Always remember that positive thinking is more healthier for your mind, body and soul than negative thinking. Don't allow your buttons to be pushed.
  • Sunshine's motto is One Day at a Time. There is no other way.

Positive thinking will let you do everything better than negative thinking will. - Zig Ziglar

But I have found that in the simple act of living with hope, and in the daily effort to have a positive impact in the world, the days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious. And for that I am grateful. - Elizabeth Edwards

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek. - Barack Obama

There are four questions of value in life... What is sacred? Of what is the spirit made? What is worth living for, and what is worth dying for? The answer to each is the same. Only love. - Johnny Depp

Barbara Purvis Hunter from Florida on April 16, 2014:

Being positive is what I try to be--- always; and when negativity rears its ugly head I pause to see what lesson I am expected to learn from the issue. If there is no lesson---then I delete it quickly from my life----as I have no time for ugly baggage or pessimism.

I learned many years ago when I taught Phonics to first, second and third graders to always be positive, smile and the children would relax and learn in a harmonious environment.

Thanks for the positive inspiration and for the sunshine you always give! There are way to much negativities in this world and we could all benefit from more positive thoughts. Love this hub, it is a real boost of optimism,

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on March 16, 2014:

This hub would surely lift anyone up even if they were depressed. I am an optimist also. If I get down or mad about something, it is very short lived. I think we all have a choice and misery is an option that I don't choose. Awesome hub!

Linda ~ I'm so thankful for you. "Also during the storm you have the opportunity to create your own sunshine." I just love this.

I will always comeback to this hub whenever I need some motivation.

This article is too timely for a "formerly-positive-going negative woman" like me, but I still maintain that positive side and I'm glad to take everything I read here.

Thank you all for sharing your positive thoughts! Your comments are appreciated! :)

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on June 20, 2013:

Linda, This is a wonderful hub and your suggestions can change anyone's life.

When I was a nurse I had a patient that had some bad breaks. One day he was disgusted with his life and came over to me and said, "You're one of those glass half-full people, aren't you?" He said it like it was a curse, but it was so funny I burst out laughing and so did he. Yes, I am. It is a choice and your have obviously made that choice.

I wasn't always this way either but glad I am now. You hub is awesome and will be shared.

Michelle Liew from Singapore on April 29, 2013:

Sharing in my Gazette, Linda.

Great hub! Thanks for sharing your ways of promoting a positive attitude and for spreading sunshine to others.

Expressing gratitude is a big one for me, even during the most difficult of times I find I can find at least one thing to be grateful for even if it's something as simple as the fresh air that I'm breathing.

Am voting this up across the board and sharing the "sunshine and positivity" with others.

Hub Hugs,

Suzette Walker from Taos, NM on April 27, 2013:

I love this hub, Linda. You really know how to bring sunshine into others' lives. I love your sunny philosophy and guidelines for living a positive life. I am an optimist who sometimes gets down in the dumps, but I always find the good in every situation. It's hard sometimes, but a negative can be turned into a positive. I will bookmark this hub and when I get down in the dumps, just read it and it will certainly help. I love the photos and images you put along with your words. Outstanding!

Jools Hogg from North-East UK on April 17, 2013:

This hub has really cheered me up today - I didn't used to sweat the small stuff then i started to -but you know I am feeling much more optimistic these days about just about everything. I am worrying less and smiling more; it might not last forever but your 'one day at a time' is the best way to live life - in the NOW!

Junie Butler from LONDON on March 17, 2013:

Indeed, it has also a lot of benefits for your health.

Deborah-Diane from Orange County, California on March 16, 2013:

It is good for all of us to be reminded from time to time of how much happier we are when we focus on the positive! Thanks!

Rebecca Mealey from Northeastern Georgia, USA on March 16, 2013:

Thanks, for sharing tips on staying positive. I needed the "one day at a time." reminder and you provided it so well!

Steve Mitchell from Cambridgeshire on March 16, 2013:

Linda, this is full of no nonsense good advice. I completely agree and have been guilty in the past of all of the negative things you speak of. It is much less tiring to be positive.

Sharing and voting up / awesome.

Have a sunny weekend.

Christina M. Castro from Baltimore,MD USA on March 16, 2013:

This hub is unique just as you are, and I am sure many will think about the many ways they could've. would've, should've....done that. Unfortunately, we can't go back and change some things, but the future is bright with more "sunshine" in our lives. Thank you.

Mohan Kumar from UK on March 16, 2013:

Ah.. I have missed me a bit of sunshine and it is nice to bask in a warm, glorious, bright hub that tells us the secret of sunshine smile. Listen and learn people. One day at a time... I can feel a song coming. Love, love it!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on February 07, 2013:

Excellent advice Rick! You should have written this hub! :)

Mary Hyatt from Florida on January 25, 2013:

I've always been an optimist! Like all families, we have had our joys and our tragedies, but I know that everything will be OK (and it usually is). I try to surround my life with people who are UP, not DOWN!

I've told you before how much I admire you for your positive attitude and sunny deposition.

Voted UP and will share.

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on January 21, 2013:

I fully believe in having a positive attitude and it makes sense to choose the positive instead of misery. When I was working as a nurse and teaching Cardiac Rehab patients, one of the patients walked over to me one day with a disgusted look on his face and said, "You're one of those glass half full people, aren't you?" He was struggling after having had a heart attack at a fairly young age, but I immediately smiled and agreed. He needed positive people in his life at that time anyway. I love your suggestions as it is the little things that sometimes make the difference, but ultimately we make the choice. Great hub!

ARUN KANTI CHATTERJEE from KOLKATA on January 17, 2013:

I am reminded of an example of the attitude of my student days when we were taught that seeing a glass half filled with water a negative thinker will claim no water at all but one who is filled with positive thoughts will declare joyfully “oh:so much of water!” . One’s woes and afflictions are associated with such negativity and finding the faults of others one misses the bright aspects of life. Thank you so much for your interesting hub and wish you all the best.

CrisSp from Sky Is The Limit Adventure on January 17, 2013:

Sunshine, you are indeed my sunshine! I'm stealing your motto: "One Day at a Time. There is no other way." --and you can't say no!

Bookmarking this one and BTW, when life throw me some lemons, I drown them in my mojito.

Cheers to a good life! Absolutely voting up and sharing the positivity here.

Claudia Porter on January 17, 2013:

Awesome hub with great inspirations! You hit the nail on the head with guilt. It can weigh us down tremendously. Over the last 2 years I have been working on a more positive outlook and it has really helped me. Up, awesome, shared and pinned.

Shining Irish Eyes from Upstate, New York on January 17, 2013:

Sunshine - This may seem a bit "backward" but I truly learned how to adopt a positive attitude when great tragedy befell our family. So much so soon truly put my back against the wall and made me realize there was nothing I could do about it.

I thoroughly immersed myself in this and your words were never truer.

Sharing and voting up.

Blessings to you

lovedoctor926 on January 16, 2013:

Good words of wisdom. I agree with your principles. A good hub worth revisiting.

Dianna Mendez on January 16, 2013:

Your list is stronger and stronger as you read through it and I find every one of them an inspiration. I know you have had your share of ups and downs recently, it is amazing and impressive at how you continue to choose the positive side of life -- even when it looks gloomy. Hugs and prayers! Voted way up+++ and will share.

drbj and sherry from south Florida on January 16, 2013:

You know I love these positive suggestions of yours, Linda, since 'Positive' is my middle name. And Johnny Cash's 'Sunshine' was the perfect accompaniment. Trust me.

Rema T V from Chennai, India on January 15, 2013:

Great hub Linda, so full of positive energy that I'm sure is transferred to every one who gets to read this. It is not an exaggeration to say that I have received from this hub 10x positivity than I already have.

"When you feel the need to whine or complain, keep in mind that there is always someone who has bigger problems than you"-this is exactly what I do when I feel low.

"When someone is trying to take away your joy with rudeness, kill them with kindness"- Simply beautiful Linda. I feel very proud to be your friend. HubPages has one big asset - YOU. Not only HP, but this world.

Loved this hub and sharing it everywhere. Cheers, Rema.

Marvin Parke from Jamaica on January 15, 2013:

Losing isn't all that bad. It is actually a great teacher.

Poetic Fool on January 15, 2013:

Awesome hub, Linda! Lots of good advice here for all of us. The very first piece sure hits home for me. It's amazing how your perspective on the latest problem or crisis can change after some time has passed. I make a conscious effort not to freak out about anything until I've had at least one night to sleep on it. Rarely, and I mean very rarely, has it not made a huge difference in my outlook. When we are in the midst of a trial it's hard to see the sun for the clouds. A little time and a little distance helps let the sun in. Thanks for sharing this great hub, my friend!

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on January 15, 2013:

Way to go Ida. No matter what life throws at us, stay positive. Being negative is a waste of energy. XOXO

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on January 15, 2013:

Way to go Shauna! You sure know how to kill them with kindness. It's a darn good feeling when the at one time grouch begins to wear a grin. I encountered my first grumpy Publix employee today. I was in a rush and didn't allow her to take my joy away, but I told the cashier about her rudeness. We were both shocked since I was shopping at Publix and not Walmart! If I ever see her again I might give her the kindness gig :)

Linda Bilyeu (author) from Orlando, FL on January 15, 2013:

Hello Rika! Always a pleasure my friend. Actually I usually over-cook a sunny side up egg, but that's's still an egg and still delicious!:)

Awesome blog on Positive thinking I am firm believer. At times our minds tend to ponder & then worry kicks in.I enjoyed your blog I will keep this in mind when I feel negative thoughts come on.Positive thinking is so important even when life does throw you Love ya Aunt Linda xoxo

Shauna L Bowling from Central Florida on January 15, 2013:

Linda, this is a great hub. You make so many great points. When I was young, my dad would have us listen to Edgar Cayce tapes about Postive Mental Attitude, or PMA. I guess they sunk into my psyche because I always see the good in people and things. There is always a silver lining in a dark cloud and I never let anything keep me down.

On Christmas Eve I had to have my septic tank pumped. Needless to say, the guy that came out wasn't too happy about having to dig up my yard to get to the access lid. He let it be known, too. Then I started talking to him, offered to help and made him laugh. After that, we went the extra mile and cut $25 off my bill plus blew out my mainline for free. Kindness certainly does go a long way. He left with a smile on his face!

Rika Susan from South Africa on January 15, 2013:

I am sure you know just how to make the perfect 'sunny side up' egg, Linda! Great hub, my friend. Yes, we may not be in a position to choose our circumstances, but we can ALWAYS choose how we are going to react.

That is a piece of us that no illness or other tough situation has the power to take from us. You are an excellent example of this. Your positive attitude always shines through.

Shell Vera from Connecticut, USA on January 15, 2013:

As always, I enjoyed reading this. I agree with your list and have similar thoughts on how to enjoy life and not allow the little things to bother me. I always look for the good in people and forgive the not-so-good. There just isn't enough time to hold on to things that don't make the day brighter. Thanks for sharing your wisdom with us!

Sheila Brown from Southern Oklahoma on January 15, 2013:

This is just awesome! We need to look at the silver lining in every situation. As long as we are alive, there is a silver lining although sometimes it can be a little hard to find. A good attitude is very important in life. I always try to start out my day by giving thanks for all the blessing I have. This helps me have a better outlook for the day. You always write such uplifitng hubs, this is no exception! Up and awesome! :)

Good morning, Sunshine!

With the battles you continue to fight, you are utterly amazing! I've always been extremely positive, but lately have found myself going the other direction. The one I relate to most is losing. Since I've been doing Crossfit, losing is simply a stepping stone to improving yourself. If you're not losing a lot, then it probably means you're not taking enough risks. Voting this Up and Interesting.

Loved this article Linda, because this is so how I was raised and even through the good the bad and the ugly, I always try to see the positive in things. Useful...awesome...interesting and just plain FANTASTIC! This is a true Sunshine Hub. And by the way.....that sun is BRIGHT.

This list rocks, Linda Sue.....just like you. For the record, I'm a 100%, true, pure and unadulterated "Realist..".....all the way. I'm told, too much so. Do I care what they say?...Of course I don't.

This is uplifting, encouraging and something everyone should carry in their pocket. When ever they get down and out...they can sit down and read "Sunshine's Guide to a Positive Attitude" The first step to a better day!.....Good one, gf.... UP+++
