Humans spend 1/3 of their life sleeping. This obviously differs depending on the age of the human, but on average it’s around a third, which is quite a lot when you think about it. There’s also a link between lack of sleep and increased stress. If you continue to operate without enough sleep, you may see long- term and serious potential help problems. Some of the most serious potential problems associated with sleep deprivation are high blood pressure, diabetes and reduced immune system function.
Increase High Blood Pressure
The less you sleep the higher your blood pressure may go. People who sleep six hours or less may have a sleeper increase in blood pressure. If you already have high blood pressure, not sleeping well may make your blood pressure worse. It’s thought that sleep helps your body control hormones needed to regulate stress and metabolism.
Increase Blood Sugar Level
Decreased sleep is a risk factor for increased blood sugar levels. Our bodies experience a cycle of changes every day called a circadian rhythm which naturally raises blood sugar levels. Even partial sleep deprivation over one night increases insulin resistance, which can in turn increase blood sugar levels. As a result, a lack of sleep had been associated with diabetes, a blood sugar disorder.
Decrease Production of Cytokines
During sleep our immune system releases proteins called cytokines, some of which help promote sleep. Certain cytokines need to increase when you have an infection or inflammation, or when you’re under stress. Sleep deprivation may decrease production of these cytokines. In addition, infection fighting bodies and cells are reduced during periods when you don’t get enough sleep which can cause your immune system to function.
Sleep is supposed to aid our body regulating the hormones needed to handle stress and metabolism. Sleep deprivation has been linked to blood sugar disorder including diabetes. Finally, lack of sleep impairs our immune system’s ability to fight infections since our bodies and cell’s capacity to do so is reduced. Walking, avoiding screen time and a healthy diet actually helps to sleep better. “It’s very easy to stay up late and burn the candles at both ends” according to Dr. Drerup. With all demands on our time every day, we should put a good night’s rest at the bottom of our priority to get rid of possible health issues.
