Dr. Larson, and SSRI use
Help for SAD, ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, and Bi polar disorder, without drugs.
With 50% of the American population currently on some type of anti depressant, or anti anxiety medication, I felt the need to report my recent findings. To dispel the disbelief in Holistic medicine, as being witch craft, and misinformation. This knowledge, and these current trials have only begun to surface within the past ten years.
In clinical trials 600mg to 1200mg of Saint John's Wort was found to be just as affective as Sertraline, (Zoloft). With fewer side effects. The side effects of most SSRI's include dizziness, insomnia, anxiety, and diareha. June 23, 2006 Pubmed.
That SSRI's are no more affective than a placebo. April 10, 2002. Pubmed.
That SSRI's where not affective, nor was St. johns wort, in the treatment of ADHD. Omega fatty acids where found to be affective.
My conclusion, I would try St. John's Wort First.
There are drug interactions with St. John's Wort. They include oral contraceptives (possibility of pregnancy), anti coagulants, HIV protease inhibitors, and digoxine. Do not take with other anti depressants, or an MAO inhibitor. If you are taking these prescriptions, it is best to consult a pharmacist, or physician before taking St Johns Wort.
Other recommendations include the following, and have been found to be very affective.
Essential fatty acids, B complex, and increase complex carbohydrates. See my other articles concerning these supplements.
Other recommendations include, Do not Combine With other anti depressants, or with each other. Choose only one.
5HT: 5-hydroxytrytophan, as directed on the label. Many recommend this supplement. Dr. Larson disagrees.
- It does not cross the blood/ brain barrier. So therefore it cannot produce serotonin in the brain.
- It could cause coronary artery spasm, so therefore anyone with heart disease should not take this supplement. It could cause heart attack, for some people.
Sam-E as directed on the label. Works in the same way as many of the SSRI's without the side effects. Do not use if you have manic depressive disorder, or take a prescriptive anti depressant.
L-tyrosine as directed on the label. Raises dopamine, and adrenaline production, as well as metabolism, reduces carb cravings, and suppresses appetite. Helpful for low energy depression, not anxiety, or panic disorder. A naturally occuring amino acid present in high protein foods, such as almonds, avocados, bananas, as well as pumpkin seeds, and sesame seeds.
L-Trytophan as directed on the label, helpful for Panic Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, as well as insomnia. Present in the following foods, brown rice, cottage cheese, meat, peanuts, and soy. Do not take if you have liver disease. Do not combine with any other anti-depressant, over the counter, or prescription.
Vitamin B3 Niacin- 50mg x3 times a day. Do not take if you have a liver disease, gout, or high blood pressure. Niacinamide might be a better choice.
Gaba 750-1200mg Daily. Has a tranquilizing effect, much like Valium, and Xanax, not as harsh, nor is addicting. Calms over active brain activity, useful for anxiety, and panic attacks. Do not take if you have liver disease. A new study reveals that Gaba is helpful with stroke patients, as it calms the misfiring in the brain, and helps to heal the lesions, and brain damage caused by stroke. This would imply that it would also be useful in treatments of PTSD, and MS. MS is lesions on the brain that affect motor movement, as well as a auto immune reaction. No studies have been released yet for treatment with GABA on those conditions.
Kava Kava as directed on the label. Induces calm. For nervous depression. Should not be taken with alcohol. Do not combine with other prescription drugs. Should not be taken by people under the age of 18, pregnant women, or nursing mothers.
For SAD, seasonal affective disorder. Light therapy, omega 3 fatty acids, and D3.
For Bi Polar disorder. Lithium by prescription only. Dr Mathews uses a natural lithium, derived from a vegetable protein, and available through health recovery.com or by calling 1-800-247-6237.
CBD Oil for depression that occurs with pain. Recent studies confirm, CBD can influence receptors, much in the same way as anti depressants. The oil does not contain THC, derived from hemp. See my article on CBD, for more information.
Common sense practices, can yield results. Getting enough sleep, drinking plenty of plain water, eating more fruits, and vegetables. Whole grains contain Trytophan, which produces serotonin, the only substance that will ease depression.
A word of caution, do not quit taking your medication without consulting a doctor. Prescription anti depressants, must be tapered off. The usual procedure is skipping days, or slowly cutting down dosage amounts. Withdrawals will occur, sometimes very serious. Do not combine any of the mentioned supplements with medication, serious interactions can occur.

- St. John's wort and depression: efficacy, safety and tolerability-an update
St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum L.) is a medicinal plant traditionally used, both externally and internally, in all Europe for many pathologies. Paracelsus named it "arnica of the nerves" because of its empirical use in nervous diseases. In the

What is GABA?
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a non-proteinogenic amino acid and is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain. GABA's stress-reducing, and sleep enhancing effects have been established.Sep 17, 2020

Some May Require a prescription, it will depend on severity
I have used GABA for anxiety, for over 20 yrs. With no Side effects. Derived from high protein foods. I have lesions on my brain, 4 total, caused from Lupus, including a mild stroke. These lesions cause misfiring in the brain much like a stroke, or seizure. Gaba actually heals the brain, it might also be helpful in the treatment of MS, characterized by lesions in the brain.
Why I do not recommend a vegan diet, as the amino acids are necessary in brain function. If you decide that protein will be omitted from your diet, I recommend a balanced amino acid blend. Make sure you are eating complete protein combinations. Such as beans, and brown rice.

Dr. Block and ADHD
An exerpt from Dr. Blocks book, No more ADHD
Taking the time to find the underlying causes of a health problem, does not fit in the
quick, cheap fix, environment of managed care. A drug to cover the symptoms is usually
the treatment of choice under the managed care mode. Without doing much else, doctors
can prescribe a drug quickly and move on to another patient. Many parents feel pressure
to put their child on drugs because most of the time the doctor offers no other options.
ADHD has been linked to food allergies, lack of omega fatty acids, as well as dyes, used in many foods, and drinks. Searching for the cause, will yield results. Her book is available through Amazon.
My Lupus Story
I have utilized many of the supplements, and protocol mentioned above, in the treatment of Lupus. An auto immune disease, that affects many systems, including joints. I contracted the condition 20 years ago, after an allergic reaction to Augmentin. Prescribed for a severe sore throat, three antibiotics in one pill.
Among the most affective for me was magnesium, D3, and flax seed oil. D3 acts as a hormone in the body, and regulates immune function. Magnesium to ease pain, and muscle spasms. D3 to calm the immune system. Flaxseed oil, to help regulate hormones, and clear brain fog. Olive leaf, and grapefruit seed extract, as an anti infective. Cycling through each, one month at a time. Do not take both, as it is too strong. Choose 1 for each month. Taken for as long as infection is present. I ran a low grade fever for two years. A sign of infection.
I also used Gaba for anxiety, as needed. Increasing whole grains, that contain Trytophan, the only substance that increases serotonin.
Juicing was also beneficial, with fresh fruits, and vegetables. Adding more protein with yogurt, nuts, and seeds.
There is no cure for Lupus, mine is currently in remission. I have experienced flares, when I don't take care of myself, but never as bad as the initial phase. I still maintain a basic supplement plan. A multi vitamin, no iron, D3, B12, and curcumin, as needed for pain. Sage tea if I have had a stressful day, very calming, helps with insomnia.

You are welcome MaximumFatLoss. Among the most helpful was Trytophan, and Gaba. As I said do not combine with any other anti depressant, or anxiety medication, as well as St John's wort. Amino acids aren't for every one, if they have a history of kidney disease, or poor liver function, they should not take. As aminos are metabolized through these organs.

I love your hubs, artist101. I came across you in the Answers section yesterday and am so glad I found you. Some of your hubs will be very useful to some my clients. As a nutritionist, I have several who ask what natural remedies they can take for allergies, depression, anxiety, etc. Your hubs will be very useful to them, and I am pinning some of them on Pinterest. Thank you. :-)
