We have heard allot about obesity and the risk associated with the added bulges especially the added bulges around our mid-line.
The news has reported it over and over again. And yet, when I walk into any school, any health club there is nowhere to be found a chart showcasing what we are actually talking about.
I worked a wonderful lady at the hospital when I was a volunteer, she was very young and yet her added weight added decades of age to her appearance. We were discussing the recent obesity findings and she openly stated but by the silly medical charts, I am obese. I was floored, I didn't even know how to bring her perspective back into reality. I knew I could not verbally argue and win this one and I didn't wish to anger her so I changed the conversation.
Risk of Obesity Charts Posters
This brings me to the need to have the charts posted and displayed. We don't even know when we are obese! I know how much I should loose to be at the optimum of my health but the general populace who is watching television and reading the medical charts needs a visual guideline to help them understand, you we mean you too!
Here are some charts that clearly portray the different sizes and how prevalent the battle of the bulge has become. Yes, sadly there are different categories of obesity ranging from obese to morbidly obese.I find the categories names to be grossly misleading because all obesity is death wish. We can choose to either feed or poison our bodies. If we allow ourselves to overindulge, we can poison the complicated anatomical systems of the heart, lungs, circulatory and muscle system.
Yes, your muscles can be starved of oxygen.Inactivity will starve your muscles of much needed oxygen. If you run and you end up out of breath and your heart is pounding, your oxygen is moving.Deep breathing during physical activity, deep breathing during stressful times are simple strategies we can incorporate into our daily lives.
When I teach children's fitness at church, I always try to incorporate some memorable facts. The visuals are often the best instructions for all of us but the children digest the visuals and soak up the knowledge so much more when it is a colorful chart portraying the message.
Here are some great charts that get us started. I hope this becomes a new field and more charts are offered and that someday every health club, every school would have a chart showcasing what obesity really is and how harmful it is to all of us.
Health and the Paradigm of Perception
My grandfather stated that if you have your health, you have everything. Yet, so many of us don't know when we are healthy and when we are sick. Long before we become obese, we become fat. This state of being overweight is unhealthy but do we really recognize it? Can we recognize at an earlier stage and prevent obesity?
I believe we can.
We have so many mandates issued by the government. We have a school system that is trying to set new paradigms of fitness in order to fight this epidemic in the United States. The answer may be simply to ask your school to invest in posters that showcase this problem.
What is amazing is the lack of these types of posters in the fitness world. Does your fitness club have one of these posters? If so, is it in public view? Or tucked away in a private office?
Where should these posters be placed? What are your thoughts? Together can we forever change the paradigm of perception? Can we create a new understanding of what a healthy weight really is?
The categories of weight I feel are especially important. We have heard of obesity but so few of us have used the term morbid obesity but it exists and this term I feel needs to be present at our schools and our health clubs.
It is my hope if the posters are placed, we can win this war on obesity and best yet have a day when morbid obesity never becomes a concern for your loved one or family member.

Sadly, today obesity needs different categories to showcase the various ranges.

- bladder disease
- renal failure
- heart failure
- hyper tension
- NIDDM (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus)

What a great idea. I couldn't agree more.
I am a huge believer in posters.
Sadly I see posters in the classroom and not in the hallways and gyms.
I hope this starts a new trend for education so that we may turn the corner on health and fight this horrible beast that plagues Our children and our populace.

A very interesting and important subject. As a Teacher, I think it would be a brilliant idea to post Obesity Charts in Schools. Maybe Just 1 or 2 so kids don't take it to the other extreme and go Anorexic.
