What is inflammation?

Inflammation is part of the complex biological response of body tissues to harmful stimuli, such as pathogens, damaged cells, or irritants,and is a protective response involving immune cells, blood vessels, and molecular mediators. The function of inflammation is to eliminate the initial cause of cell injury, clear out necrotic cells and tissues damaged from the original insult and the inflammatory process, and to initiate tissue repair.

The classical signs of acute inflammation are pain, heat, redness, swelling, and loss of function. Inflammation is a generic response, and therefore it is considered as a mechanism of innate immunity, as compared to adaptive immunity, which is specific for each pathogen. Too little inflammation could lead to progressive tissue destruction by the harmful stimulus (e.g. bacteria) and compromise the survival of the organism. In contrast, chronic inflammation may lead to a host of diseases, such as hay fever, periodontitis, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and even cancer (e.g., gallbladder carcinoma). Inflammation is therefore normally closely regulated by the body.

Body pain


Our bodies become inflamed when the immune system jumps to action. If you suffer an ankle injury; your immune will trigger an inflammatory response (or inflammatory cascade) by sending out white blood cells to take care of the damage—for instance, your ankle will swell, be hot to the touch, appear redness, and feel tender—which all indicate that the immune system is working so the healing process can begin.

When injuries or infections occur; this series of events signifies a healthy immune system response. However, chronic inflammation occurs when swelling sticks around and doesn’t let the healing process begin. It often rears its ugly head in the gut (or gastrointestinal tract), resulting in painful bloating, alternating diarrhea and constipation, gas, and a distended tummy.

Digestive issues

Because chronic inflammation originates in the digestive system, it makes sense that digestive turmoil may actually be a source of inflammation itself. Oftentimes, a simple anti-inflammation diet—one high in essential fatty acids, probiotic digestive supplements, and daily exercise will help balance the intestinal tract and get it working again optimally.

Poor diet

When we eat a meal that’s particularly rich, our digestive systems need to put in extra work in order for efficient digestion. This most often occurs if we rely on sugary, or processed, or fast food as the main staples of our diets. When the metabolism and GI tract are overworked; chronic inflammation often results.

Food allergies

Specific food allergy triggers—such as casein (found in dairy) and gluten (found in wheat) will cause an inflammatory response in the digestive tract for sensitive individuals. The only way inflammation can be soothed is by cutting allergens out of the diet completely (via an elimination diet) or by taking probiotic supplements to increase the levels of “good” bacteria and support healthy digestion.


Chemical cleaning products, cosmetics, or air fresheners are another common source of inflammation—particularly if chemicals are airborne or irritants that are absorbed directly by the skin. Even low chemical exposure can exist at home, at work, in the air we breathe and the water we drink prompting chronic inflammation.

Now, scientists have finally proven that the anti-inflammatory properties of six essential oils work in similar ways as NSAIDs to inhibit enzymes called cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) which promote inflammation, swelling, and pain in the body.

Topical application of essential oils is a highly efficient treatment for joint pain and nerve pain as they are directly absorbed into the bloodstream.

My nerve and joint pain blend

I created this massage oil to use for the nerve and joint pain that I experience. This will also help with the mild seizures that I also experience. You do not have to use all the oils mentioned here. You can simplify it. I will post a list of essential oils that are great for joint pain, for you to choose from for your own blend.

What is Trauma Oil?

It is a blend of three organic flowers – Calendula, St. John’s Wort and Arnica – infused in organic olive oil. An infused oil is a carrier, usually olive oil, that has been soaked (infused) in herbs or flowers. If you’ve ever made sun tea, you’ve made an infusion! The oil that results from an infusion contains the wonderfully medicial properties of the plants that were soaking in it. The result is a versatile product that can used alone on the skin for healing or added to salves and balms. Using an infused carrier oil in addition to essential oil is a terrific way to double the therapeutic benefits!
