Motivational Quotes and Tips to Help You Reach Your Fitness Goals

Motivational Quotes

Genetics smiled on me when I was born. Both my parents are and have been thin and are very athletic people and I was blessed with their body types but unfortunately, not their love of exercise. I told myself that exercise just wasn’t “my thing” and somebody had to be on the sidelines cheering everyone else on. I made the signs, woke up early, and supported my family and friends through various races and triathlons. I jokingly referred to myself as “skinny fat” because while I was thin I was definitely not healthy.

But life has a funny way of introducing events in our lives that wake us up and allow us to see things from a whole new perspective. A year and a half ago my husband agreed to do a 5k scavenger hunt at Disney with a co-worker over our anniversary weekend. I was upset about the loss of our time and I asked him why he wouldn’t do the race with me and he answered honestly and said, “I didn’t even think about it. You haven’t run a day in your life and have said in the past you have no intention to.” While the words hurt they were the truth and that was the turning point for me. I asked my sister-in-law, who is an avid runner, to train and partner with me in the race. That was a year and a half ago and since then I have since competed in 4 obstacle course mud races, various 5k’s, a 15k, and one half-marathon. I am currently training for my first triathlon and along the way I have learned that it isn’t easy. You have to make a conscious effort everyday to get up and train because it is always easier to say I’ll start tomorrow. One way I motivate myself to get going is through reading quotes and using other people’s stories as my inspiration. So I am including a list of some of my favorite motivational quotes to help you on your journey.

A vision board is a great way to see your goals.

A vision board is a great way to see your goals.

Getting healthy and exercising has its many rewards and benefits but it does take a conscious effort to keep at it and not stop. To keep myself going, I post different quotes and goals around the house in places I see everyday. For example, for my upcoming triathlon, I posted the fastest times from the previous year’s winners on the mirror in my bathroom so I can see it everyday and know what I am working towards. Other good spots include the front and back door, the refrigerator, a vision board, and the underside of the visor in your car. Feel free to contribute any quotes or methods you use to motivate yourself everyday.

Thanks for sharing your story with me Denise. I am getting ready for my first triathlon in 2 weeks as I ended up sick last October the day before the other one I signed up for.

I wish you luck as you continue your journey!

Denise Handlon from North Carolina on April 23, 2013:

I found your story of your journey towards fitness intriguing. I applaud you! It isn't easy to make a lasting change from a pattern that is already part of our 'groove'. So, kudos to you.

I've had two 'moves toward fitness'. One was over a year ago when I had to 'get moving'. At the end of the summer I prepared for my first 5 K and did so successfully. I even wrote a hub about it, including a video my friend taped. All fell to the wayside when I twisted my ankle and shortly after, started a very stressful job on the midnight shift.

After a year of steadily regaining weight and then some, I hit the wall. The Dr scale read: 178! I had NEVER been so heavy in my entire life, including when I was pregnant x 2. I decided that was the line in the sand. I spent the rest of the week contemplating my game plan and started back to the gym January 14.

I have lost 13 pounds so far and my doctor was absolutely thrilled with my 'numbers'. I've a long way to go, but I don't feel 'right' now when I don't exercise. I'm taking classes to break up the floor work, and love it.

This August I will be participating in my first Triathlon with my sister and her friend. I'm proud to say "not bad for a gal pushing 60" I know I have a ways to go, but I'm encouraged by my progress and looking forward to reaching my goal.

Best to you...keep up the good work. UP/I/U and sharing.

Wow...what a gathering of great may not be motivational but you are inspirational! Congrats on your turn around. I used to be active and exercise, loved roller blading, but somewhere along the line got lazy...this hub makes me want to move!

Voted up, useful and interesting.

I love this one: “Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” –Lou Holtz

I'd say I'm also blessed with good metabolism and physical structure. Just turned 45 and my jeans (size 2) from 10 years ago still fits me. Big savings from buying new clothes, eh? But then again, I have to take care of it or else...well, because even though I like to move around and I enjoy works that involve some physical activities, I'd admit, I still need to be motivated from time to time.

And, this one is a great motivational hub!

Voted up and sharing. Thanks.
