Mental Health Matters—Just a Reminder

Just when the entire World is finding ways and means to save precious lives—how would you feel, when you hear the news of some promising young boy or girl, ending their life, by committing suicide?
Yes, it’s shocking and frustrating to hear such unfortunate news.

  • Why, why at all?
  • What could have happened?
  • Why was there no sign, that she or he is going to take that extreme step?
  • Was she or he lonely?
  • Was she or he under mental stress or depression?

It’s hard to believe, that she or he was suffering from any of these situations.

We keep on hearing the multitalented, young boys or girls, students committing suicide. They look happy otherwise, successful, and what not?

So many questions do the rounds, and everyone tries to guess the answers.

But, a precious life is lost by then, forever, never to return.

  • How important it is, to seek an expert help, or a counsellor, before it’s too late?
  • How important it is, to talk to someone, and share, or confide with someone, so that the precious life is not lost?
Mental Stress can be fatal. Take care of yourself.

If you know someone, who is suffering due to mental stress, encourage them to do the following activities.

  1. Talk to a counsellor or a therapist.
  2. Exercise or Physical activity or Yoga.
  3. Meditation.
  4. Go Outdoors, meet people, socialise.
  5. Sleep well.
  6. Avoid addictions.
  7. Avoid self medication.
  8. Keep yourself busy in creative activities.
  9. Talk to your family, or friends.
  10. Be positive, take life easy.
  11. Acceptance of yourself, and your circumstances.
  12. Eat well, have a healthy lifestyle.
  13. Play some sport.
  14. Don’t dwell in the past. Everyday brings new hope, new opportunities.
  15. Have ambitions, but be realistic.
  16. Hope for the best, but be prepared for the worst.

It’s Important to Share Your Worries With Someone Close

  • I am not a counsellor or a psychotherapist. But, I am a parent, and have been a teacher. Therefore, I understand that the mental health has to be given importance, from the very beginning.
  • Make your children close to you. A combination of love, care, concern, discipline and strictness is important.
  • We must inculcate the habit of sharing in our children, whether it’s their worries and anxieties, or their joys and achievements.
  • It’s unfortunate to see, that the emotional connection is not found these days. I wouldn’t say, in all the relationships, but in many of them.
  • We must give patient hearing to the children, teenagers and the young generations.
  • It doesn’t matter, if solutions of the problems are not found. But, sharing the concerns with someone can ease the mental stress and the anxiety level.
  • It’s essential to make the young people understand, that one doesn’t live only for himself/ herself. So many people, who love them, who care for them, will be affected, if something happens to them.
  • From the very beginning, the children must be trained to handle pressures.
  • Life comes with it’s package of success and failures. One should be able to remain composed in both the situations.
  • Testing times do not last forever. The children should be trained to take lessons from the failures and move on.
  • Problems, worries, failures are part of life. If good times do not last forever, even the adverse or difficult times do not last forever.
  • It’s important to teach the young people, the importance of, ‘LIFE.’
  • Life is the most precious gift, and problems are a part of life.
  • If something adverse happens, that doesn’t mean—‘End the life.’

To Conclude:

  • Mental illness, anxiety, depression is fatal. It can happen, and it does happen in this fast paced society. It can take a person to such a dark corner, that he or she feels alone and lonely. And, ultimately they take the extreme step of ending their life.
  • We, as a society can help. Hear them, Help them, comfort them. So that, no more precious lives are lost.
  • Life is a gift, so beautiful and precious.
  • I am not concerned, whether this article is read by five people or five hundred people. But, even if it makes a positive difference to five people, it will satisfy me.
  • Make sure, that your loved ones are content and peaceful, and not suffering in any way. Physical illness can be seen, but mental illness can’t be seen.
  • But, it can be heard.
  • Make phone calls, video calls, somehow stay connected.
  • Keep track of your family, friends, neighbours, acquaintances—are they feeling well?
  • Knock on the door and talk to your neighbours, if you sense something is wrong.
  • Make sure, they are not suffering from some kind of mental illness, anxiety or depression.
  • You might save a life, by doing so.

The present times are of course difficult times, but even otherwise there is a lot of pressure on the young generation, in personal and professional life. Some of them succumb to that, which is so sad. I wish they could talk to someone and get over it.

It is always sad to me when someone ends their life, especially when they are perceived as "successful" people. I think, sometimes, depression has nothing to do with what is happening in someone's life. I think it can (not always) have something to do with hormonal imbalance. I believe that when the serotonin levels are low, sadness and depression can sink in. However, in any event, all of the measures you have outlined in your article are important to remember and apply.

It’s difficult to comment on, what was going on in the mind of the person, who took this extreme step. But, I do believe that we should try to make the children mentally strong, from the very beginning. They should be taught to share their anxieties, with someone, and not suffer alone, in isolation. Things might be easier to handle in this way, and tragedies like this could be avoided.

The song "Starry, Starry Night" (Vincent) has a line - "This world was never meant for one as beautiful you".

The world with all the pressure s, expectations, and competition is too harsh for some people to cope. There has to be a way(s) to overcome this. But, I don't know what it is.

I agree with you that it’s an all time problem, and not necessarily during the pandemic situation.

There is so much mental pressure, the pressure to be successful, then to retain that. There is a lack of communication, or emotional connect, in many families. I just wish, that people care for each other more, talk often, give a patient hearing to the affected ones, so that such tragic things don’t happen.

Yes, it’s a matter of great concern in today’s world, pandemic or otherwise. The young people have to handle a lot of mental pressure. There is cut throat competition, and no time to communicate. Everyone wants to reach the top, and if they are unable to get there, they go into depression. If they talk and share their concerns with their close ones, counsellors or self help groups, such tragedies can be avoided.

I agree with you that human contact and human touch is so important. This pandemic has snatched this away from everyone. Maintaining social distancing and all that. Some people are stuck up alone in isolation. It’s not easy for anyone. Ending the precious life is no solution.

My children are working from home, but they miss going to their office, especially their colleagues. It’s good that you have restarted going to your clinic.

You are right about this, that this Pandemic has left many people depressed, and anxious. When will this end, is difficult to predict, at this point of time. It’s a test of everyone’s patience and perseverance. That’s why, it’s important to keep ourselves busy and engaged in some or the other activities. Yes, we as a society can help. In certain circumstances, it’s easy to fall apart. How I wish, that these people, who take this extreme step, could talk to someone, be heard by someone. No one in the right frame of mind, could decide to end the precious life. There is a lack of communication, even in close relationships, and that’s so sad.

It is a shocking news and coming to terms with such a huge loss is difficult. He was one of the country's finest and talented actors.

Depression is painful and dealing with it is not easy. Smiling faces are sometimes deceptive as they hide their pains. Opening up to someone is also not that easy maybe fearing that the person will not be understood and will be judged. Lending ears with the intention to listen to them without judging them may help them feel relieved. Professional help if required must be taken.

I have noticed an increase in mental health issues due in part to being in lockdown. Isolation can be extremely debilitating to those who suffer mental illness. Keeping in touch with friends, family or people you know who are on their own is so important.

Even though I was working from home, it is that human contact that is so crucial and thankfully I am back in the clinic. Your article highlights the tragedy of suicide and the suffering. It also raises awareness of mental health in general with your valuable advice.
